Hamburgers & Cheeseburgers
4 pointsGot my '77 out from a year long selfish hibernation. I love my 240 but I'm gonna have to cheat on the old car and get back in the 280. Rebuilt it then bought my first 240 and put the 280 on "the shelf" but after driving it an hour or so today it's back in play. I love those cars, different feel but a good comfortable one. Better brakes too. I have some ZX flat tops I'm thinking I'll put in under the N42 head. Should wake it up a little plus I'll definately get the 225mm flywheel lightened or maybe find an aluminum one. I think, my opinion!, that's the best bang for the buck. Having been raised up on quick revving motorcycles the aluminum I put in the 2.4 is like a motorcycle with a bit more protection. I'm looking forward to my new project! And of course I'll be posting plenty as I go.4 points

1970 240Z on eBay with Low VIN?
2 pointsMade an offer on the car. The seller's friend raised the price while he gets in touch with the seller to see if he will accept my offer. I will post if I get the car. I will not be able to pick it up for a couple of weeks, I am leaving on vacation tomorrow. Once I have picked it up and cleaned it up I will post some pictures. Hamburgers & Cheeseburgers
1 pointI've just about done all I can to the 240 without spending big bucks that I don't have at the moment. The suspension needs replacing then rear disc but it drives and runs fine for me. sorta like heated seats, I can wear thermals if I want to drive when it's that cold. The 280 was my first auto engine rebuild and it runs great but I've learned a lot about "the details" since I built it. So I'm going to dress up the engine a little better before I get the car painted. I bought all new clothes for it but didn't get them tailored.1 point

Seafoam spray through carbs ?
1 pointI haven't studied or used the stuff, but it sets off my snake oil alarm. Pour it into the gas tank. Draw it directly into the intake tract. You can even rub it on sore muscles. Puts tread back on worn tires. Cures whatever ails ya! More power to the people who believe they've gotten good results, but I just don't like the sound of it.1 point

Somethings wrong...
1 pointGosh that's the truth, so sweet She is full of kisses especially in the morning when I wake up, all wags and wiggles. I really have to be careful, she is very quick in everything she does, especially kissing. She works very hard to try to French kiss me all the time. Ptooey! Very quick. Hahaha. When I laugh at her it really excites her even more. Such a zooming wiggle butt. I finally found a toy small enough for her mouth. It is a tiny stuffed dog that is off a key chain, and about 3 inches long. She really loves it. Thanks for your fine comment. You all will be seeing lots of pictures of Lissa in RedBird, next to RedBird, in my chair by RedBird, and more. After all, this is a Zcar list, I have to keep her photos legal. We have such a good time together, this was made in heaven. I am blessed... Jai1 point

Ignition drops voltage while cranking/starting
That's not a good way to do it. The ignition switch cannot handle a lot of amperage. Fuel pumps can draw significant amperage, especially when used in a returnless system and when they get older. The factory wiring also uses too small a gauge of wiring to the F/Pump and that also increases current draw and Voltage drop. 40 year old wires don't help either if they are still stock. The addition of the extra Fuel Pump amperage draw, plus all the normal devices connected to switched ignition, could be enough to burn the contact points in the ignition switch. Connect the Fuel pump through a proper relay. A Bosch 30 or 40 amp relay is better than the factory EFI F/Pump relay Use 12 gauge wire minimum to the Fuel pump from the relay. Both on power and ground side The MSD is also sensitive to voltage drop on the small +12V ignition feed. That's why I recommended isolating the small +12v switched power lead and running it though a Relay to the battery.1 point

Ignition drops voltage while cranking/starting
MSD boxes are infamous for out right failing and having intermittent problems. The older model 6AL's and 7Al's are particularly bad. Might be an idea to disconnect the MSD from the Ignition switch power though and temporarily wire the small red wire ( +12v switched) directly to the Battery positive terminal. Use a small switch and a fused line. Large red wire should of course be connected directly to the Positive battery cable with a 20 amp fuse or Circuit breaker. It's best to run the switched +12v wire from it's own separate relay. They can be sensitive to voltage drop from loads on the ignition switch. MSD shorting internally could cause the voltage drop to 0.1 point

1970 240Z on eBay with Low VIN?
1 pointTook a look at the car this evening. A friend of the original owner took me too the house to see the car the owner is in Florida. It is always sad to see a Z in this condition. The Vin# is 04574 May of 1970 production date. Everything is locked up the engine brakes etc. The floors are in better condition than I expected but the front frame rails are shot along with the rockers, rear quarters, rear inner fenders as well as the front fenders. There is indication of sag in the fitment and closing of the right door, but that could be due to the way is is on the jack stands. The dash is cracked. I am pondering whether to make an offer or not. I plan to get back with the friend of the owner after thinking it over tonight. The mice will not be happy if I trailer it home and I believe that smell will linger for a long time.1 point

Deja Vu: 1971 Restoration
1 pointI would call it ironic timing on the carb arrival as my wife and I went to the Queen + Adam Lambert concert at the Hollywood Bowl last night. Of course they played one of my favorite songs; 'I'm in love with my car'. I think my wife thought I was getting into the song a little too much....and then the 'carbeurettas' show up.1 point

Somethings wrong...
1 pointWhen he sits still long enough I'll post a picture. Maybe I can catch him while he's sleeping? He is still a big ole puppy though and there ain't much chance of sneaking up on him! He'd been a good dog for Clint Eastwood. Remember that movie when the old Indian tells him he's noticed when people sneak up on him they get shot. I can't sneeze without him "come a runnin'". He's super protective of the one that feeds him.1 point

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
1 pointKats, The original throttle shaft bearing design was doomed to wear from day one. And for that matter, all carburetors have a similar problem; the metal of the shaft and the carburetor body is 'soft' metal which will wear excessively with the constant use. I believe that they were designed that way to prevent binding. Throttle shafts machined from a harder alloy with a similar alloy bushing will work just as well as the bearing arrangement that ZTherapy provides. I have even seen throttle shafts plated to compensate for wear. In both cases, either design, I would recommend occasionally oiling the bushing / bearing with some penetrating oil. Your re-builds look fantastic. It is great to see such a delicious set of early carburetors. Engine jewelry!1 point
