What’s my first move??

I’m working through the electrical on my 1977 280Z and could use guidance on where to start next. I’m not very strong with automotive electrical, but after digging into it I think I’ve found the main issue. The car starts and runs and the EFI works, but only the headlights (one side intermittent), oil pressure gauge, and high-beam indicator function. All other dash lights, gauges, wipers, blower, brake lights, and accessories are dead. When I inspected the passenger-side fusible link area, I found the factory fusible links missing or bypassed, with the main feed wires tied together using wire nuts. The alternator is still stock and externally regulated with the regulator plug jumpered, and the fuel pump is currently on a manual switch with the factory connector unplugged. My understanding so far is that these were workarounds to keep the car running after the fusible links failed, but they left most of the electrical system without proper power or protection. I’m hesitant to make changes because the car does run, but it’s clearly not safe to drive without basics like brake lights. My plan is to replace the fusible links with a 4-circuit MAXI fuse block to restore proper power distribution first, then address the fuel pump and charging system afterward. I’m looking for confirmation that this is the right starting point and advice on what to watch out for so I don’t make things worse.

I suggest using a marine type maxi fuse holder. Littelfuse makes a line that I believe would work well. It's the Maxi 152 series. https://www.littelfuse.com/products/fuses-overcurrent-protection/fuse-holders-fuse-blocks-accessories/fuse-holders/in-line-fuse-holders/maxi-152

I am thinking it would be a part number like 01520005Z. I attached the cutsheet from Littelfuse. Littelfuse-MAXI-152-Series-Datasheet.pdf

To crimp the terminals properly, you would need a set of crimpers like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0978S514B

Are you sure the voltage regulator has been jumpered out? You can verify with a multimeter. Measure voltage to ground on the yellow wire at the T plug on the back of the alternator. If it has voltage, the regulator has been jumpered out. However, if that's the case, it would cause problems when the car is running, like human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA! Okay, maybe not that bad, but you get the picture.

Thanks for the input — that’s a good point. I haven’t verified charging voltage yet, so I can’t confirm whether the regulator bypass is correct, but checking that with a meter is on my list. Based on what I’ve found so far, the main issue appears to be the fusible link area being bypassed, which seems to be starving the interior fuse box of proper power. My plan is to restore proper power distribution first and then verify charging behavior once everything upstream is correct. Appreciate the guidance.

The plan seems good, but the replaced/bypassed fusible links wouldn't cause a power loss. Unless the wire nuts aren't creating a good connection of the wire ends. The bypassed fusible links just remove protection of the wiring from the system. Things should still get power but the wiring will overheat if there's a short circuit. Might be that that's happened in the past.

The voltage regulator is underneath the shelf (relay bracket) that the fusible links are attached to. Kind of hidden.

This is a rats nest that was created by the previous owner in my opinion. Moving forward without repairing each circuit is asking for serious issues to the harness and devices within. Start with the basics and repair what’s been butchered previously. My opinion,

Ok. Fusible links wires have current going through them all the way to the harness right before the fuse box. I jumped the fuse box with a jumper cable and I get the door buzzard is what it sounds like. Power seems to be to stop at that splice which looks factory?image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

That is a typical Nissan crimped splice. There's no reason that power should not make it through, crimps are good splices.

You should be able to test across the splice with a test light and/or meter. I would check the wiring diagrams and follow the path to the fusebox. Maybe somebody cut a wire for some reason.

Many circuits in the fuse box get power from the ignition relay. Are you sure that relay is functional? It is found on the passenger kick panel. Since it is mounted upside down, it is prone to water infiltration/corrosion over the years.

The fuses in the red box only have power with the key in ON and ignition relay functioning. The fuses in the green box only have power with the key in ACC or ON and the ignition relay functioning.

I was just about to say the same. On the 280Z's the relay is in a leak zone. Not good!
