Best Starter Motors replacement

Av8ferg have you done the starter-relay mod to your Z?

I have done this mod. I was burning up ignition switches pretty regularly until I added the starter relay. Great and affordable mod.

Nissan started using gear reduction starters in 1978.  So that's not really a new thing.  If you search "britishstarters.com" on the internet you can find reviews from people that have bought them.  Here's one.  Kind of what I was afraid of.  They don't really describe where they source their motors on their web page.

Almost got stranded yesterday with a starter failure. Was able to bang on it with a hammer and get another start of of it. I’d just get one “click” when I turned the key. This is a remanufactured (AC Delco -premium) gear reduction starter.

You might take it apart and see if it's something simple like a dirty solenoid contact or sticking mechanism.  Remove the solenoid and pull it off of the slug.

Here's a video.  Solenoid removal starts about 5:10.

Thanks, that’s the second recommendation to fix this myself.   While not against that, I’ve always hated this starter since the day I got it.   It makes an awful noise when starting and I blame it for toasting my ignition switches.   Maybe that’s not fair but I just want a reliable piece of gear.   I will pay for quality and that review makes me think this is the best I can find.   I will continue to search.   RockAuto has one that doesn’t say Remanufactured on the listing so I’m curious.   Say it’s made by WAI Global

There's a new option.  Meaning not reman'ed.  WAI Global.  I don't know anything about them but the cost is less than the reman'ed BritishStarter unit.  And no core required.

Edit - didn't see the full post above.  WAI already ID'ed.  Good luck.

Did a little digging around about WAI Global.  This is a legit new starter and the company seems to have a good reputation for quality.  I bought using my America Express which doubles the manufacturers warranty.
I ordered it and will report back my findings when it arrives.

Is a gear reduction starter available new from Nissan?

Looks like the the 280zx starter is 23300-N5903. Looks like it's pretty hard to find. There is a newer part number that looks to be a reman 23300-N5903R

Ferg, maybe you could find one in Japan or Europe when you travel or have another pilot look for you
