Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432

Recommended Posts

Bits and pieces comparison ,

tail gate inner rubber and hood upper rubber , both cars still have originals , just amazing .

Tail light exterior panel , both are non repainted , but there is a difference of aging , fading for each.

Thanks blue , I must add one thing , each car has each smell . I always feel “ USA “ every time I get in the orange 240Z. And I really like the smell . I can not say well enough, what makes me feel like that ?

Maybe you are not realized , but  I am sure there is a certain smell in the US . Each time I opened the box bought eBay USA, , there was a smell which I like . It brings back good memories to me when I was at a flight training in Bakersfield California .

Supermarket , warehous , airport , everywhere.

Hi Kats!  Thanks for your die hard devotion to our cars/forum.

I have always loved the smell of the Zs I've owned. I assumed it was the carpet or plastic panels but who knows, I just know if I was blind I could smell a Z. LOL

The sound of the hatch opening is very distinctive also if I was blind.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge in a polite manner.

Cliff

EDIT: Kats you have always been more than polite!  I apologize if that sounded bad.  You are one of favorites.  Manners be damned.  Cliff

I understand.  I remembered the smell of Florida from 1973 holidays as a child when returning for work in 1997. My Z's smell the same too.  It must be the plastic or some fungi that likes the interior.

There is one Z that I did not like the smell. It had 12 dead mice in it when it arrived.  Horrible lol  Everyone liked the pink colour and Ford V8!

We tried washing the interior, smell remover, etc. but no success

The paint guy in our car club had to strip the interior and clear coat the inside to seal in the stink.

Thanks Mike B. Now just need to figure out which proxy bidder to use.

It's a little different from the one in Kat's pic. Could the one on auction be from a later era such as the 80's?

I have one of these stickers on the back of my JDM 1972 Fairlady z. The back panel has been resprayed by the previous owner, (original colour can been seen where some of it has cracked off). . I think they cut the sticker down at the same time. Probably because it was peeling off.

Interesting, 1 thing I noticed about all my S30Z's is they have the same smell too! I always thought it was the smell of the vinyl and jute materials, coupled with the dashboard and interior plastics. I love the smell, it's takes me back to 1997 when I got my first 240z as a 17 year old boy who had worked with my uncle as a bricklayer over my summer holiday from school to pay for it. It's funny but I always worried that using reproduction materials wouldn't reproduce the same smell... I definitely think it's the aged vinyl, because I have a box with spare vinyl pieces and when I open it I get hit with the same smell.

My 70 is stuck in the garage without driver side door glass and rear hatch (so the interior is open to air) and as a result the smell has left it. However I suspect if I put the hatch back on and door glass etc.. and seal it back up, each time I open the door I'll be hit with that smell.

When I was in the US I opened the door on an HLS30 and noticed the same smell, not sure if the home market cars smell different? :)

In a 240z I restored:  replaced carpets, replaced all vinyl (including roof), replaced seat covers, sprayed all the plastic panels, sealed all holes in cabin, and had the painter spray the interior.... yet the Z smell prevailed.

I am thinking dash and wiring are big factors.

This is the picture when my ZG was on sale , ( numbers are hidden by the seller , this is usual thing in Japan )

you see the Kanji character “ SHINAGAWA “ that is the car registered in Tokyo Shinagawa district . 34 is showing the car was registered a long time ago , and 3 means over 2000 cc engine. Now we have 332 etc for the car like that .

And there is a white ring with a sealed cap for the license plate, this is also proving the car was registered a long time ago.

If I was a resident in Shinagawa area , my ZG could have the license plate as it is . That is very sad for me and the car , but I did not have any idea to remain the plate with the car , I had to registered it in my district.

Hi blue and Gavin , thank you for the wonderful stories , you have same experience with me !

Good question about the smell of the car , I am sure my ZG , spending its whole life in Japan has a completely different smell .

I am afraid to say this , my ZG has a kind  of MOLD of smelling. Probably, this is a normal Japanese old car 😅

So , S30 car was made in Japan , but it became an American if a car was exported to the US . It must be true for every car , for every country around the world.

I have heard, people visit Japan can smell Soy sauce when they arrived at the Tokyo airport. I have never feel like that , maybe because I am Japanese .

On the other hand , every time My family trip to the US by US airline carriers , we become so excited when we walk through the boarding bridge in the Tokyo airport , we smell USA already!

Hi Danny , wow !!! You have done tremendous work on your Z !

What a beautifully done , and you said you put R192 , MK 63 , and even 10 x1000 Tach, I noticed Nissan badge too , I can see how hard that you have been collecting them .

And you cleared the issue of the exhaust manifold, it must be a hand made , very nice .

RB 20 DET is 4 valves per cylinder ,right ?

So your car is 4 valves, 3 carbs , 2 camshafts , like a Z432 . The difference between RB20 and S20 is a bore x stroke,

78 x 69.7 RB20 ( L20 and VG20 too)

82 x 62.8 S20

And yours are way powerful than stock S20 !

I would like to see your car’s movie .

Please keep going to show for us .

Thank you for the post , it is great !

Kats,  Thanks for the kind words.  The RB20 is 4 valve.  And they are cheap and plentiful.  I have an extra one standing by if this one blows up.  The manifold was modified from a RB header imported from NZ.  Here are a couple of videos.

Danny ,

Sounds awesome!! I love the tunnel with

opening the windows, your RB20 is very well tuned , response is sharp and quick . .

What kind of ignition system do you use ?

LHD S30 with DOHC , I have been thinking doing it but not any progress so far . You did it already !

I have heard RB series engines were only applied for RHD destinations due to the issue of the exhaust fabrication.

Is it true ? Only Japan , UK , Australia, New Zealand, etc ?

The ignition is a Megajolt with ford edis.  I mounted the coil pack to the inner fender to allow the plug wires to follow a similar route as the S20.  The RB was never sold in the US and I can't think of any LHD vehicles that have it.  Another option for DOHC would be the Datsunworks head.  http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/119641-twin-cam-head-for-the-l6-from-derek-at-datsunworks/

Did you convert a Turbo RB20 or non Turbo RB20?

I like the Z432-R 'look' now you just need the Ikeda Bussan seats to match!

They are not too comfortable though.
