valve cover painting designs
I've got some spare tabs and wire holders for the two that go on the valve cover but I don't have an extra plastic holder for the fuel rail. The bracket that Arne has on his water oulet isn't on a 280Z and is replaced by the one on the fuel rail. Note that there isn't a wire mount in the hole behind the PCV hose on either one.

Proof that Z owners are the coolest!
?????????????You've either got the wrong year or the wrong model. But earlier in your post you said 280ZX. It would have to be a 79 and up.

I like the stock ones. Do you still have the metal tabs that they mount on? And the one that holds all 6 wires that attaches to the fuel rail?

I'm with you on that one.

260z Vin#'s and production info
I don't think it matters much. Having a low VIN 260Z (or 280Z for that matter) really doesn't much. It would be signifigant if it was a pace car but it's still not like having a low VIN 240Z.

hi I'm steven
They come stock with a turbo if you get a 280ZX Turbo model. They made ZX's with and without the turbo. The power to weight ratio is about what you'd expect from a 25 year old semi-sports car. The turbo model, of course, would be quicker but by the time they made the 280ZX and even back to the first 280Z they were heavier than the 240/260Z and were headed more towards the sports/luxury market than the earlier S30s. They have air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, etc and are not nearly the sports car that the 240Z is. And this opinion, and it's only my opinion, comes from a 280Z owner. I'm sure you'll get other opinions here but they're not bad cars (ZXs) but don't expect a race car. One of the girls that used to work where I work called me 'Scuba Steve'.

I live in Portland Oregon
Let's not lose the fact that this thread is "I live in Portland Oregon" which would imply some connection with/to that city/state rather than the random individual bios that are showing up since the thread has been awakened. Michelle's question, after all, was "Where did all the Oregon people go???"

Z plate
Didn't notice the question before but if I need to score points with my wife after 10 years I must be doing something wrong!

Or even the $275 car (ten years ago) http://public.fotki.com/BlakeneyS/1978_datsun_280z/

I need an answer in the next 40 minutes! HELP
No tips for EGR tube installation other than putting some anti sieze on the threads and on the tube where the nuts spin. That's what I did although it's probably burned off by the heat the exhaust generates. For the wipers I just slide refills into my stock ones. I even have a backup set of OEM assemblies in case something happens to the ones on the car

So, what's your connection with Oregon?

One other thing on that EGR tube. You have to remove the top nut first. You have to put a wrench on the fitting and another on the nut itself. And the lube should not only go on the threads but also on the tube itself where the nut will spin over it. Rock it back and forth. Not much, just enough to break up the rust between the nut and the tube. After the top one comes off, and it will, work on the bottom one. That way the top of it is disconnected and won't twist against itself when you attempt to remove the bottom nut.

I need an answer in the next 40 minutes! HELP
You can get them anywhere that sells tools. They wrap farther around the nut which prevents it from rounding off and are designed for lines and fittings which is basically wht the EGR tube is. The larger ones I have came from SnapOn($) but you can get other ones as long a they're good ones. The ones pictured aren't mine, just a generic picture.

I need an answer in the next 40 minutes! HELP
Vice grips, hammers......that was your problem right there. I used patience, a lot of penetrating lube(!) and flare wrenches. One of the benefits of being an AC tech is that I have flare wrenches large enough to use on the EGR nuts. They will come off without breaking as will the manifold bolts if you do it right.

I live in Portland Oregon
I was born in Portland. Haven't live there since 1955 but I still have relatives there and visit semi-occasionally. I once entertained thoughts of moving back up there but after buying this house and moving everything I vowed never to move again.....anywhere!

I need an answer in the next 40 minutes! HELP
If you mean the intake/exhaust gasket between the manifold and the head, there's a lot of labor involved there. If you mean one between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe, I'd do that one myself. Of course, I'd do either of them myself but the first one is much more labor intensive.

260z Vin#'s and production info
No. VIN's didn't get that descriptive until 1982.

Bucking and then died and won't start again
If it were me I'd refill it after it cools down and test it to see what made the car overheat to the point where it blew coolant out of the oveflow hose (the skinny hose hanging from the radiator). Thermostat, water pump, head gasket, etc.

stuck in a rut, clutch/shifter problem
Sure you can. I bought my parts seperately.

stuck in a rut, clutch/shifter problem
Unfortunate, but true. I put a NOS pressure plate with the brand name "Sachs" in my 810 when I put the new 5 speed in and the pedal resistance is great. Better than OEM. I wish the one in my Z was like that. I bought it from Auction Frontier when the were on eBay and have never seen another one. And it was cheap!
