My two swiss S30Z Fairlady Restoration build thread
Hi, I just wanted to say the data of FS5C71B in the book is inaccurate. My red writing is just my idea, since FS5C71B has two types of ratio for the 1st and 2nd. Nice sportier gearing has E9500 for its related parts while the other has E9507. If you remember these numbers it will help you to distinguish which is a correct part for your FS5C71B when you shopping. By the way I am trying to summarize data of transmissions, it is very complicated! Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Thank you so much Alan, I have been looking for the picture of wiring of the bolts for our engines, just fantastic! I think oil pan bolts can’t accept much torque so wiring is a good backup for securing. And thanks for educating me about engineering back ground. Now I am interested in how did mechanics do for their military airplanes and ships WW2 etc. Please stand by for further details, I will be so happy if all the gears are intact and have correct number of teeth as Option 2 gears. If not, I will still be happy because it is FS5C71A anyway! And I can dream about Kubo san’s relationship with this one. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Hi, in March 1971 Nissan Race & Rally manual introduced Option 3 gears, please see the attached picture. It says “Option 3 is for a short distance race, Option 2 is for a long distance race. Option 1 is for a small course” By the way GTR’s first race ( May 3rd 1969 at Fuji Speed Way) was something unusual. Toyota 1600 GT finished first GTR second. Everyone expected GTR would have won firmly even Toyota team thought the same. After the race, a few days passed, the GTR became a winner because the Toyota 1600GT had obstruction. The GTR had a Option 2 transmission. A general manager of the team Mr. Aoji said “the transmission gearing was wrong for freshman. We thought start is only once in the whole race. But we should have taken it more seriously” As we see the data Option 2 gears looks like omitting 1st gear. It requires certain techniques especially with S20 engine. You can go faster if you can maintain higher RPM. The race officials announced specific rules two months before the race, “ drivers who won Nippon Grand Prix etc can not enter this race” So Nissan team had to train freshman immediately. Kats

Thank you so much Patcon, The one in the picture all wired in series is super! I have never seen like that before. I want to do it beautifully, use a drill to twist wires? Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Hi, Alan and xs10shl or other people, can you find out what it is? A bolt for fixing the transmission case. The bolt’s head has a hole, I guess it should be used for a wire securing. But how I can do that? Two bolts adjacent each other should be tied? Or any other way? I have got this transmission yesterday, I made a gamble for this. The seller said this is Option 3, stand-by duty for a racing team. And he heard it came from Speed Shop KUBO, really? I rotated the rear end flange to see how much turn does the input shaft make. The seller and I confirmed it is close to the Option 3 ratio. Without any internal pictures, but I jumped in. I am scared to open the case, let’s see what I will have. Kats

My two swiss S30Z Fairlady Restoration build thread
Great books and parts! I am wondering the data of FS5C71B, my understanding is after 08/1976 they got 3.321 for the 1st gear except Australia. Before that all the export FS5C71B was the same as GTR and Fairlady 240Z series, also Z432( Z432-R was discontinued before the birth of FS5C71B anyway). Am I correct? I know you have already read through the Nissan transmission manual, so my inputs are for everyone here who is interested in the data. I also have the small book but for 1970, it is interesting descriptions in Spanish! I can’t understand any of them but will be a good textbook for learning Spanish. I amended some data which is inaccurate for the gear teeth. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
I am surprised (maybe only me) that the clutch master cylinder applied for Z432/Z432-R and LHD car was used up to Aug 1974! For the US, it is from the beginning of 240Z to early 260Z. Now I see why I have got mine from the US. In Japan we have only approximately 420 Z432( 380 Z432, 30-50 Z432R ). The cylinder E4100 to 4201 is rare to see ( I guess other Nissan cars were sharing the cylinder body but) here in Japan. HLS30 and RLS30 were approximately 240000 cars up to Aug 1974. Why Nissan used E4100 suffix for the cylinder applied HLS30 and PS30 chassis at the beginning? E4100 was the suffix for S30 ( RHD, L20 model) originally. It should have been used for S30 and could have been used for HS30 body. If I were the man who categorized the suffix, I would have E4200 (Z432) or E4400(HLS30 Euro) or E4600(HLS30 US and Canada ) for the cylinder when the factory started making them. Anyway, for RHD car, the clutch master cylinder has suffix of E4300 which was originally designated for HS30 ( RHD, L24 model). I can’t stop myself being excited that the clutch master cylinder had the suffix E4201 for early 260Z until August 1974. Note the red marking of the illustration of the E4100 to E4201 is not correct. This port should be the other side. By the way,Skyline GTR up to December 1972 had the same port on this illustration. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
They are for Z432, upper one is a spots option and the lower is a STD. And they are both hand made replica! To be looked like genuine one, they will be sand-blasted before installed. I can’t tell it if I weren’t told that they are replica. 500000 JPY ( 3800 USD) is not bad at all if someone desperately needs original style manifold. Originals are notorious for cracking at lower joint. I guess Z432’s dual exhaust system is heavy for the manifold to hold on. These replica use stainless steel which contains less iron than original so less rusty maybe. With this craftsmanship, we can have a L-series early exhaust front tube which has a three way junction made by two-piece pressed steel. Or entire system will be an easy job for them. How do purists people do for their old rusty exhaust system especially in overseas? Are there any good shops? I don’t find out yet so I just buy good originals when I saw them. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Hi Chris, the left side is the same for all the other models. Mine was switched to a later one when the restoration was in progress because the original was bad shape. One day I visited Pierre when I had a free time in LA and I bought the early duct set with a metal ring. Oh, one more parts from the US, my Z432 has a clutch master cylinder from an early 240Z in the US. Z432 and early HLS30 (maybe up to 1971?) are sharing the same one. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Wow! That is a very accurate replica, I didn’t expect much about it but Jay is selling nice one. Yes I agree with you, almost half of them are missing the duct. Mine was too, temporarily I put a replica then finally I managed to get the used one for my Z432. Maybe it is fragile as time goes by, people didn’t want to be bothered fixing the soft plastic and threw it away I guess. More rare item is a battery cover! I imagine mechanics forgot to put it back on after periodic maintenance or, owners chose a bigger battery which would not fit in the original small battery cover. Or, the frame has two metal clip to retain the cover in position. That clip is also fragile in long term use. About the screw, it is silver. I bought a batch of them long time ago if you need I will send it to you. Kats

Thanks Alan, your measurements are perfect! I also love the hand made manifold by a craftsman in old days. They were like an art. Also I feel there were artists in the Nissan engineers. I can spend whole day just looking at my engines, transmissions, yes manifolds and mufflers! Kats

Hi, I show this again, a Z432 Sports Option manifold and a Z432 STD manifold. Looks like GTR has similar pipes to the Z432 Sports Option, but bottom junction is different. Kats

I worked for the Z432 tach which I want to make it being works look. The works tach which I have seems not working with a standard Z432 igniter system, so I decided to transfer its glass with a needle and scale Zero at 6 o’clock. It was very easy job but I found I need to make a hole for an additional illumination lamp just next to the left hand turn signal indicator. We don’t have the extra lamp because our cars don’t need it. For the Zero at 6 o’clock scale, it must be. Otherwise I can’t see it well esp IMG_1851.MOV ecially around 0 to 3000 rpm at night. I will do it when I have time. Kats

I did repair job of a master vac for my 240Z with my friend. I almost forgot that I have a special tool box for S30 series. This time I opened the box and pulled a tool which is for twisting the backplate of the master vac. It worked!! 1973 Skyline GTR’s master vac is still available from local Nissan dealership, I used it as a donor for my 240Z. Some of its Internal parts are interchangeable. My friend also needed to do the same thing for his Z cars. By the way he recently bought two Datsun cars, 1935 blue and 1936 orange. They are still good for driving. Amazing cars! Kats

Restoration of BringaTrailer 240z - HLS30-35883
Yes you are reading it correctly. And yes they are different in free length. For the front, blue and white is RH 54010-E4104, blue and red is LH 54010-E4102. (Although the picture which I post in that thread had an error for the LH, it says -E4202 this is for PZ) Today I post this, from a parts catalog of Fairlady Z series 1972. This is correct. Kats

Radiator lower support anomaly?
Thanks for sharing the story. I looked it up in my parts books I found the part number 74820-N3200 is not only specific for Fairlady 260Z. It is used for S30 series export RHD and LHD from August 1974. I was too excited about it. But seeing the mounts on the left side is still exciting for me. Kats

Radiator lower support anomaly?
I think the same way like Alan. This is so rare, it exists ! This will be another example of fact that Nissan was going to sell “Fairlady 260Z”. We have seen so far a front fender Badge, and the air cleaner box. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Thanks Alan, I am so glad that you are sharing your fantastic pictures here, I appreciate it so much. We can see a lot of details, I can just stare those pictures all day long. What a shocking picture that is!! Broken apart wheel!! I just hope that never happens to me. By the way, do you think the reason why the open type spinning collar nut became dome type head nut would be to prevent studs from dirt and soil? I would like to know how about Works cars on the circuit at the same time frame. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Thanks xs10shl, I am learning from you too. And more pictures, thanks! I didn’t expect that the Works wheel has a straight hole for the straight sleeve nut, it is interesting. For safety reasons, people don’t recommend using the old original magnesium wheel. Also Nissan says about care of it in the book “after driving in a salty water you must wash the wheel really well with the fresh water” I know most of Z432 owners are still riding on their original magnesium wheels. Never heard of bad news. Maybe they don’t travel far away? I know there is only one enthusiast who loves driving long-distance across Japan is Takeuchi-san, a PZR owner. I do drive like Takeuchi san, but he has been doing it from late 1970’s. Kats
