I paid just under $100 for Classic Vehicle plates here in Nevada a couple weeks back. I am limited to 5000 miles a year which is ok because I am limited to 2500 miles a year by my insurance policy. If I had not gotten Classic Vehicle plates I would have had to smog test it here in Washoe County. You also have to smog back to 1968 in Clark County. It would never have passed smog with the triple Webers...

The May Sacramento Z Car Reunion - May 19th
Ok, so even though I don't live there anymore and in most cases can't be there, I have been asked to get the Sacramento Z Car Reunion up and going again... Fine! :pirate: So, the May Sacramento Z Car Reunion will be May 19th 9am to noonish at Family Donuts and Deli. Still located at the Northwest corner of Fair Oaks Blvd. and San Juan Avenue. Come on down and see the old gang! Brag about how well you will be doing at the next autocross. See you there!

Coating brake calipers and rotors/drums
John, The real test is in how long it takes to the heat to get out, not how hot they get. I would test each at 10 minutes 20 minutes and half an hour. The hypothesis being that it takes longer for the heat to get out of the painted caliper. I agree though, on a street car it isn't an issue.

You don't build enough heat during an autocross run for it to make a difference. Fade would come from a 20 minute track session or a bit of canyon carving. Trust me on this. Coming around turn ten at Brainerd International Raceway and finding your brake pedal going all the way to the floor is not the excitement you signed up for...

Yes it will. Trapped heat causes brake fade. Plate them. Don't paint them.

Brakes: Restored! Not just rebuilt...
I think you're right Mike. Eric definitely over-restores. He is in Brazil right now but I'm sure he'll answer when he returns. (Family vacation)

$1,000 reward for this rim !!!!!
I had a set on my 914 when I bought it. They were called Western Wheels IIRC. The dealership pulled off the factory alloy wheels and put on aftermarket alloy wheels so they could upcharge the original buyer. Then, they sold the factory wheel out of their parts department.

where's Les now?-Classic Datsun really a business?
I just spoke with Les today... No problem. He answered his own phone and we talked for probably 1/2 an hour. He definitely isn't a one-man shop and it isn't a part-time venture. He has about 2 years of work sitting in his shop. Those of us who know what having someone like Les in the Datsun restoration business are probably a bit more patient... No one else is jumping into the business and with the rusting that is going on, he has less customers every day! It wouldn't surprise me if he closed up shop and went to work restoring some rich dudes vintage racers...

Let's open our minds a bit and realize that there are more uses for an old Z car than we might imagine...

Jetting for Reno or 4500' above sea level
Carbs are synched within a 'gnat's breath' and were effectively pretty well jetted for Sonoma, CA (Original Customs) restoration shop that I use. I trailered back to Reno yesterday and got her off and fired her up. Still runs nicely, but the A:F ratio numbers moved to the rich side in a dramatic manner. 9:1 range for idle and just on the rich side for acceleration. I didn't dare do WOT testing as I live within a few short blocks of Damonte Ranch High School and I would imagine there is a cruiser or two waiting for the boys to display their testosterone... All my jets are in a box in a Sacramento storage garage so it will have to run a bit rich for now. I am looking around for the stock choke mechanicals that I can cable up to the Webers with for now. I managed to find a lever and mount with all the electricals for the light on ebay but when I got it I realize it is meant for the right side of the console and mine, a '73 is on the left. Anyone want to trade?

Brakes: Restored! Not just rebuilt...
Will do Grant. I just have to get the car in the same state I'm in long enough to do it. It's been at my friends shop in Sonoma for the last few months. I see it when I am in California...

Brakes: Restored! Not just rebuilt...
Just a quick update: I have been driving on the calipers that you see rebuilt here for a few months now. I used the Porterfield R4S pads and shoes that I sourced from PMB Performance, Eric's company. The brakes are everything I imagined. They are balanced and strong and haul the car down without drama which is exactly what I was looking for. No noise, very little dust, just a great pad. As you can see from the pictures of the rebuild, I sent Eric some absolute junk and he turned them into jewels. Follow his method or just send him an email and have him do it... I suspect you can get some quick turn-around too, since I sent him all the other core calipers I had in the garage as well...
