  1. neither of the cables for the fresh air vents would work. here is how i fixed them. here is the rusted, broken cable this is probably the most important step. the rod where the cable is attached is hollow and tapered. cut no more than 3/16" off with a cut-off wheel. this leaves a clean cut which is needed to get the rest of the cable out of the rod. tap the rod on something and what is left of the cable will fall out. then re-taper the rod with a bench grinder or a file so you have something like this. now you are ready for new cable. the cable should go in about 1/4". if you cut off too much earlier, there may not be enough to get a good crimp. i used a set of wire crimpers to clamp down the cable in the rod. it is quite secure. i imagine solder would work as well. now, put the cable back in the housing all the way and close the damper. mark the cable where it lines up with the hole in the damper and bend it at 90* run that bend into the damper and finish the bend with some pliers. good as new
  2. Lumens, Oh thank God (and some very savvy Z car owners) RedBird is doing excellent now that the gas problem is gone. A couple times in the past 3 days she has coughed and died. But started again quickly. I think that happened because I didn't give her enough gas. Something a little different, but which I think I know what it is. Starting, she is now doing a rrrr, rrrr, rrrr, before catching and starting. This morning it was 34 degrees, and I was concerned if she would start at all. The reason being, she has an older battery, and it isn't even the right size (outside measurements). I have been expecting to have to replace it any time now. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and do it now before I get stranded because of it. RB report up to date now! Have a fantastic day, I plan to go for a ride in this beautiful weather! Love my ride!!! Jai
  3. FWIW my wife sees my zed as "the acceptable mistress". Keeps me home and in the garage except when I'm on the road having great grins. She "accidentally" added up all my zed purchases once...only once. We never talked about it again. Cheap fun and no worries. Cheers, Mike
  4. I'll kick things off with an easy one. Raise the idle speed slightly. Just use your ear since the tachometer doesn't work. If idle speed is too low, the plugs can foul during warmup. At low idle speed the typical Z car alternator can not meet the demands of the electrical system. This could be causing low voltage during warmup, which can cause a variety of problems. It's easy and can't harm anything. The Z EFI system passes through two areas during warmup where idle speed will drop - once when the AAR valve closes and again when the ignition system goes off the second pickup, if it has one. If it doesn't have the second pickup then it sits in a low RPM area for longer. Modern EFI systems monitor RPM and change timing to hold a steady idle. In short - turn that screw counterclockwise a 1/2 turn or more and add some idle RPM. Worst case, your battery lasts longer.
  5. In the last week, at least 13 causes have been proposed for the problems Jai is having with her Z. fusible link ignition switch switch for the fuel pump EFI relay solenoid coil could still be fuel related spraying freon on the TIU ECU the auxiliary air regulator fuel pump raising the idle speed slightly potentiometer valve guide seals They cover a fairly wide spectrum. Unfortunately many can't be checked without test equipment and will result in the tried and true "remove and replace" method of troubleshooting. I'd like to suggest that Jai check and eliminate the items on the list as possible causes before we add more to the list. It can get a little overwhelming, especially with the added stress of the accident repair. Just a FWIW thought. Dennis
  6. Watch out for altitude corrections on this head level calculation. Rho * G * H IN Colorado it may be a smidge different than in New Orleans. HAHA What a great idea man. I am so going to try this to see how close I got mine using the gage I bought from Keith.
  7. dontcha just love all the space around these motors? it always makes me happy to look down and see grass on both sides of the block - unlike anything newer where god forbid you drop a tool in the bay cause you'll never find it again... looks great - fun thread to follow!
