Very Cool Ignition Upgrade

There is a new Input

I was never overall happy with the 123Ignition.

The main reason was, when the Engine was hot and I stopped it for just a minute, it tooks a few seconds to start... Annoing.

Now I added a Crane 6300s. (low rpm Inductive with a longer dwell and changes in the higher RPMs to multispark.)

Result... Perfect.

Now I know, the 123 is a weak ignition. Good for programmable Stock replacement.

My webers are now happy in every situation. cold or warm. always a good low idle at 600-700rpms

The Crane 6300 is a very nice ignition box at a reasonable price. However, it does require some sort of electronic module to drive it.  A 123 Ignition internal module will work fine, So will the original 260z/280Z TIU or the Matchbox dizzy module. Points will require an Optical conversion, which can be purchased from Crane and others. . The 6300 box will not trigger directly off a Magnetic Reluctor or Hall Reluctor or Points.  

A couple of things to clarify. It's not really a low RPM box, It's rated at 8,000 RPM for 6 cylinder engines and 10,000 RPM for 4 cylinders. Crane is very conservative with their ratings, including RPM capability and Compression ratio ratings. 

The Multi Spark feature is at low RPM's ( below approx 3,000 rpm ) then it changes to a long inductive spark above that. More than enough for most normally aspirated street driven cars IMHO.  Big boost Forced induction engines should probably go with the Crane HI-6 6400 CD box.

Uups I mixed the low and high rpm up... You are right.

My impressions are (the numbers are my order of usage)

1. Original distributor --> really Weak (with triples a pain)    = 0$

4. 123Ignition with 1.5 Ohm Coil Flame Thrower -->weak but Programmable (with triples a bit annoing) = 570$

3. Original Distributor recurved with Pertronix ignitor and 0.7 Ohm MSD Blaster 2 Coil -->Strong enough for triples but not programmable = 340$

2. Original Distributor recurved with Pertronix ignitor and 0.7 Ohm MSD Blaster 2 Coil and MSD 6530 "delay" Programmable --> Strong, Perfect for triples (but unreliable in my case) =720$

5. 123Ignition Distributor with Crane 6300 S and LX-91 Coil 0.4 Ohm  "normal" Programmable --> Strong, Perfect for triples (But expensive all together) =770$

As I said, this is my opinion/expirience

I have had a couple of people recently ask if there are any issues with the oem tachometer operating with the 123ignition.

If so what have you done to correct the problem?

Should this be a separate topic so it is easier to find?

In my personal application which is not Datsun but rather a 1969 Smiths tachometer I sent it to John Ostick at JDO Instruments in the UK. He actually replaces the insides with a modern tach while retaining the original face and needle for that nostalgic look.

I have been running a 123 ignition for a few months now and my tach works normally with a bosch red coil and no ballast resistor.

A separate topic would be easier to find.  This thread is on Page 6 and will probably keep growing.

You could also put it on your web site and link to it.  A link to a link.

You might want to make a list of web sits you're involved with too, so that you can check back sooner than 11 months.  Just saying, it's been a while.

p.s. apparently 123 is closed until 1/14.  so there may not be a response until then.
