I finally have the 72 running today so that it does not die after a few seconds:classic: the only problem is i have the distributor turned as far as it can go towards the retarded side:confused: I don't know if this is an indication that the timing chain is completly off or if i have something else wrong. I tried moving all of the plug wires so that i could put the distributor more on the advanced side but it was a no go. The car seems to be running great as it is, but it worries me that it is completly retarded and leaves no room for change. Any advice would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks!

So, as I posted yeaterday I thought I had a bad headgasket in my good L28 that I just installed. Well today I started pulling it apart and must say I am FAR from a happy camper with what I found... Please keep in mind this was a very very strong motor that was put togather in about 01. I bought the car soon after the motor was installed. The PO of it only drove the car about 100 miles before parking it. I ran the car for about 2-3 hours worth in my driveway before pulling it an setting it on a motor stand in mid 02 untill last week. Yes it was drained 100% and had all open holes plugged with oil soaked rags. Yesterday was the 1st run since that point. All new f…

OK, so today started out good. I got my car started today. When I first got her started I had alot of white smoke from the tailpipe. I didnt think much about it at first. I thought well the motor had been sitting for over 5 years. I pulled the car outside and let it sit running for about 15 minn or so. It looked like the smoke was letting up alittle. So I did a few laps around the parking lot. Then it acted like it was running outa gas. So after messing around with it for awhile I pulled the fuel pump. I was very shocked too see that the fuel pump rod had milk on it. I pulled the dip stick and the oil looked like new. So I cleaned the fuel pump off and put it back on. N…

The car starts up pretty well, though every once in a while it'll immediately die, and takes some coaxing with the accelerator to get it to stay running. When idling, at first rpms will hover around 800-850, then slowly drift down. The car starts running rough, rumbling, until it gets down below 700 rpms and dies. Also, when coming to a stop and idle after swift acceleration, the car stinks of exhaust fumes and gasoline. Is this a fuel injector problem? I was going to replace my fuel filter; would that be a waste before i know what's causing the problem? --------------------- 1976 280z Automatic

Hey guys, I was hoping for some advice if you have any information that might help me out. I just brought my stock 1978 280z home from getting a diagnosis from AAMCO and this is what I know: The transmission is leaking from the front and thus the oil is a little low. Also the clutch master cylinder (and slave cylinder) needs to be replaced, as it is leaking as well. He estimated $400 to replace the seal on the tranny, refill it with oil, and replace the master and slave cylinders. Is this too much? Does anyone know a cheaper alternative? I'm in southern California/orange county area. I don't have the resources/expertise to do anything super complicated by myself. Than…

My 240z seems to smoke a lot if the car is revved up when it's idling or if the car is cold. Once the car is warmed up it doesn't smoke when it's being driven, but it still smokes a lot if it's revved up when it's idling in neutral. What are all the possible causes of this? I'm thinking it could be a slightly blown head gasket that is causing some water/coolant to mix with the oil.

My son just bought his first car, a '77 280 that we will be restoring together. We totally gutted and stripped it down to the shell last weekend which was a lot of fun and he learned a lot. My question is in regards to the fuel injection system on these cars. My plans were to install a little larger cam, I think MSA calls it a Stage 1 cam along with bumping the compression using a new set of pistons, but I could not find much information on how much compression or cam the stock EFI system can handle. The engine has a freshly rebuilt N42 head but it does have the stock bottom end with the dished pistons. BTW, we do not have the budget to install an expensive aftermarke…

I have searched on different sites and have been unable to get a straight answer, so I will ask here. My 30+ year old radiator needs to be replaced and I am trying to decide between the MSA 3-row copper/brass radiator and having a custom aluminum radiator built. The MSA radiators are on sale right now for $180 + about $30 shipping. A local radiator shop will build me a radiator that fits like OEM for between $225 and $300. Once they see it, they will know better, but I did give them the size. My question is this: Which is better for cooling? I have heard some people say AL is better and others say copper/brass is better. Assuming the AL price is on the low end of th…

I am looking for parts to rebuild my transmission but first wantd to confirm the model I have. According to the parts CD a F4W71A is correct for my early '71 bulid date 9/70. But since the engine was replaced with a 280 I want to postivley ID it. I can't seem to find any stamps and only found a large L1 on the side. It is a four speed so I assume the CD is correct but want to verify. Also where can I find parts besides bearings and seals? Best, H Houghton
