Alright, so I was taking off the transmission tonight to put the engine on a stand. I didn't know what to expect. Was it going to be a mess? Was fluid going to gush out all over the floor when I undid the bolts? I was not expecting what I found! My first thought was, "How did they get in?" I thought it was a sealed system and stood there just scratching my head. Then I finally realized that I had removed the starter in the past and that left a nice little entrance. Jeez! :stupid: carl

I've just had the stock L28 out of my '76 280Z rebuilt. It had to get punched out by 30 thou, and the dished pistons were discarded in favor of flat-tops. Can anyone tell me what the CC's on the stock pistons would have been, or even just tell me what my new displacement and compression ratio should be? I guess I'm also going to have to figure out what kind of timing to run with the new compression ratio. I was using premium fuel before, and now I'm going to need it for sure.

The good news is my front seal isn't leaking. The bad news is I haven't identified what is. I have a leak that is in the vicinity of the oil pump, but I can't tell if the leak is coming from the top of the oil pump, the timing chain cover or the section of the oil pan that is right in that area. The pooling seems to be most significant under/near the alternator mount. I've cleaned up the area with a rag and I'm letting it seep for an hour or two. I'll try to get some photos later. In the mean time, any suggestions?

Does anyone have a link to the '82 Factory Service Manual, or an exploded diagram of a 5 speed? I'm trying to figure out what the pieces are that were stuck to the magnet on the drain plug. Thanks.

I found these interesting (Series I 240). Are they a standard Series I piece as opposed to the rectangular ones found on all other S30 cars?

If you have an L series crankshaft by itself, how do you determine whether it is an L26...L28 or an L24 without measuring the stroke? In other words, are there any marks or numbers to simplify the process?

Anyone have info with regard to turbocharging the 81-83 ZX normally aspirated motors vs. starting with the ZX turbo motor? From what I can see, the norm. aspirated motor for the 81-83 is an F54 block which is stronger (same as turbo), but it has flat tops. The turbo on the other hand has dished pistons. Is that the only difference in the block? Obviously the turbo has a P90 or P90a cylinder head and the non-turbo has a P79. Where am I going with all of this? With the modern capabilities of the electronic fuel injection systems we have today, can we bump up the compression ratio a bit by running the flat top ZX block and do "better" than the turbo ZX motor? How m…

Just curious, I've seen a few posts about upgrading to CV half shafts but haven't found any pictures. My car came with an R200 and the 4-bolt-flange U-joint shafts - are CV units something else?

I bought a 240Z Track Car, with a 280ZX turbo motor a couple of months back. It has the stock turbo oil pan in it. I was kind of surprised that it had a stock oil pan as a purpose built track car. Does the turbo pan have any type of baffles in it to keep the oil near the pick up? I tried a search, but could not find an answer. I have an AZ ZCar aluminum pan that I am thinking about putting on there. I have been pretty busy lately, so if the stock pan has some baffling in it, I might wait a while. thanks, Marty
