I installed an '83 ZX 5 spd in my '71 240Z, along with the L28. I was not crazy about the idea of cutting the sheet metal in the shifter area, so I had the shift lever cut and welded to come out further to the back of the pivot point. I also bent the sheet metal upward at the front of the shifter hole to create more clearance. It seems like that may not have been enough to avoid interference problems. I think the rubber boot is bunching up at the front and putting enough pressure on the shift lever to pop it out of gear. Either that, or the new shift boot rubber is so stiff that it pulls the shifter out of gear. For those of you that have cut into the tunnel, what hav…

I have a number of the gear-reduction type starters; believe they are from the 280ZX?; and want to find out if they will work on a L24 motor. Seems like they fit the tranny hsg., but not sure if the solenoid kicks in far enough. Also, are there any advantages to using this type of starter?

Okay, so I'm going to put this out there. It seems to be common knowledge that 280 bumpers are less about form, and more about function, so I'm looking for information about swapping thinner-styled bumpers from an earlier Z (E260/240) onto my 280. I've done some searching around on the forums and come up with some vague, rather lackluster results, and I'm hoping some helpful folks can point me toward some info as well as, hopefully, examples of projects like this that have been done in the past. This is a project I would like to tackle at some undetermined point in the future, and I figure the more I know sooner, the better prepared I will be. My opinion question to a…

MSA tells me you can't get a vacuum pot for a '78 L28 dizzy (Auto trans/Fed spec.) so I need to find a compatible one. Any suggestions? Would there be a disadvantage to going with just the mechanical (9 deg) advance? It seems the vac pot can potentially add another 15 or so degrees of advance ... thx.

Can the plastic vapor tank from an early z be replaced by one of the later metal tanks? If so, how hard is to make the swap? Thanks, Bob
