Greetings, Background: Inspiration: A couple of weeks ago I posted a plea for help in the Engine & Drivetrains forum under "Plug Reads?" Much help was given and since then I have replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Running much smoother since then. But because a big part of my troubles was due, I think, to the plug wires wearing out, not because of age, but because of physical handling, I wondered if there was an inexpensive, non-destructive way of getting a handle on the health of my ignition system. Which leads to: Knowledge of Oscilloscopes: While not 100% accurate, my knowledge concerning the use of oscilloscopes is well approximated by S…

I must be missing something here or misunderstanding something... I'm not the most versed at reading wiring diagrams but I'm not ignorant either.. 78 280z.. Is the volt gauge wired to the same fuse as the hazard switch?

Hello I'm new to the site. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the fallowing issue I'm having: I bought my first z (83 280zx) last month and the alternator was overcharging. I went and got a new one, and I tested it before installing it on the car, and it was good. Now for some reason I think somehow put thenwires on wrong. There is a white cable wich is the positive, and off that there's a thinner one. That thinner one runs to a little cylinder like thing wich is grounded to the alternator. Then the is a harness wich has two wires on it. As soon as I started the car smoke came from this conector and it melted ... Can anyone assist me with any info, I would greatl…

So i picked up this car recently and just want to fix a few qwerks before i sell it. I know my way around a car pretty well though i'm 100% new to both nissan/datsun and the 240z itself. my temp gauge isn't working so first thing i want to check was the wiring to make sure the sensor has proper power and a good ground, this car however through me for a loop because i see what seems to be 2 possible sensors. i was hoping if anyone could help me identify which one is the temp sender and what the heck the other is. i believe the one circle in green is the temp and the one blue is my mystery. and how do i test/ replace a temp sender assuming im right on which one is which. r…

So I've been driving my 78 z for a few days now because the weather isn't horrible. But 2 days ago I was driving it to work which is about 10 miles away and about the 8 mile mark all of a sudden the car shuts off. Now I've got no start. I come back later to see if anything can be done and it starts right up. After work I drive it home get about 8 miles and it dies again, no start. After some time (about 2-3 hours) it starts up again. Both times the car just literally dies, no sputtering or anything its almost as if you turn the key off. The last time I had my multi-meter on me and a sparkplug socket. I took a plug out to see if there was any spark an nothing. I was also n…

I see a starter relay available on ebay for $15. Am I missing something? Doesn't the key signal the relay/bendix on the starter motor and all of the amperage goes directly from the battery to the starter and not through the switch? I am trying to figure out the benefit to this (looks like typical aftermarket relay)

Hi, so my starter is dead. RIP. It clicks once and silence. So I had a question regarding replacement. My car came with an automatic, which it still has now, but I am eventually going to change it to manual. But I need to replace the starter ASAP. So, I need an AT starter no matter what for right now, but will it work once I change to manual? or will I need to get the MT starter later? Just trying to judge how much I should spend on the starter. and if this did come up, I did use the search button and google. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I went for a night drive the other day and after going over a speed bump, my dash lights went out. Tonight however I noticed that the side lights and the parking lights do not work either. The fuses were all checked and replaced. The headlights, turn signal/hazards, and break lights work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as always.

and no tail lights with the headlights on. I have high and low beams, turn signals and brake lights. Fuses and bulbs are all good. What is the best way to track the problem down? Also, the hazard flashers only work when the ignition is on. Shouldn't they work with the ignition off? 1970 #4095 Mike

Title says it all. I've got a 72 240Z with a tach that tops out as soon as the key is turned to the on position, start position, and while the engine is running. Only way to stop it is to turn the key off. Pretty sure it's the tach itself and not wiring, etc because I just went through a bit of a situation with my ignition during which I tested and found the entire ignition circuit and every component to be perfectly fine. I'm about to pull the dash to replace the lights and would like to fix the tach, too. Any advice on what to look for and replace when I get the tach out and apart?

Hi, I would like to open the my 240z tail lights and clean them. If anyone could provide some guidance as to how to go about opening the tail lights it would me much appreciated. I just want to make sure that i dont break then in the process of trying to separate the the lens from eh body of the tail light. Currently the tail lights are off the car and i have removed all the wiring and bulbs out of the back. thank you

Just wanted to thank Dave Irwin for making a headlight harness for my 76 280Z. I needed to supply some plugs from the 280Z. The workmanship is excellent and my headlights are much brighter. Thanks Dave. Dave Ruiz
