Mike, ! The two topics (this and the moyest one) have had that many views! Not unique views, but there is no way to count that... I think the fact that this thread has had 740 views and only 46 posts tells us that there is a LARGE population of visitors here that do not post. If you look on the "Who's Online" section a lot of the time there's a 3:1 ratio of "guests" to "members". Pretty interesting. Anyway, yea, the 2500 figure isn't exactly accurate, but it sounds good I could never be a politician, I'm not a very good liar. :tapemouth

Whatever the final decision, I'm thankful for this topic and the discussion that came before it. It has not been futile. Now that more people (over 2500 views in the 2 topics) have seen it and read it (even if most didn't really get the point..) we're more aware of the issue and how people feel. Like I said in my other post in this topic, the large majority of "mistaken identity" are by accident I feel (e.g. the Moyest case - you started all of this mate ).

Firstly, THANKS ROB for identifying my question That seems like the best answer we can find Carl, believe it or not car companies use ergonomics quite extensively these days. That's why a lot of things are placed where they are. The norm regarding the handbrake is to have it on the side of the driver - to be easy to access. Nothing about short arms or long arms. Just convenience. I don't see what's so 'ridicules' about designing something for the largest common factor... cars are designed to fit tall people in them, why not fat people? Since it's only "a few cm" I'm sure the thinner people wouldn't mind. Seems perfectly logical to me... of course that's just one possibility - I never said it was the answer. I am not expecting an answer, I am not so naive. I just thought perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me may be able to bring up something I hadn't thought of. You've told me before you see in black and white, and certainly have shown it here. Grey upsets you for some reason... is it so wrong for me to ask a question without expecting an answer? Excuse me for being so curious/pointless... I am surprised the "it's off-topic!!!" remark took this long actually.

But I see no reason as to why the handbrake would be there. That's why I started the thread, because I'm curious as to why a car that was only LHD would have the handbrake in a unconventional position. Perhaps Alan's "bashing" wasn't so silly... perhaps Pontiac's anthropometrics showed that it would actually be easier for larger sized people to reach the handbrake if it were on the other side? Something to think about... Perhaps you need to change your avatar - "no why-ning either!". Maybe to you it's not a big deal, but I am genuinely interested. I'm not talking about the Z, I'm talking about other cars! The placement of every component in a car I would have thought was backed up by reason. I am certain there is a reason and I'm sorry if you don't care, but I do!!

In response to Alan's (Pugh!) posts - precisely. There's no question as to why the Monaro's handbrake is on the right. Thankyou for that very pertinent information! You can see similarities between this situation and Nissan's back in the day... same "more will be sold here, so therefore it's designed for us" attitude too. Stephen, it is true that where the handbrake is does not prove or disprove anything. I think we all believe that, but I DO think it does give us clues. That's why I gave my examples. Most cars have the handbrake on the side closest to the driver, in the market they were destined/designed for. This is only logical! Which is why I posted this topic - the TransAm seems illogical (snigger) from that point of view. edit: Alan beat me to a reply. Alan (T), thanks for clearing up (once again) the S30's handbrake position debate. Rather than not believing these things, I think sometimes people forget them.. it has been quite a while since the last handbrake debate . I wasn't doubting that if that's what you thought - just curious about the positioning on some other cars. Can you think of any reason why the Pontiac would have it's handbrake on the right??

Guys, As most of you are aware, the handbrake on the S30 is on the right side of the centre console. This is generally seen as a sign that the S30 was designed first and foremost as a RHD car for the Japanese market - not that the LHD car was an afterthought, just that it wasn't designed specifically for the US market as some would like to think. Anyway, that's been discussed many times and not the point of this post! My point is a picture I recently came across which I find interesting. This is a Pontiac Trans Am. I don't think they sold in any country other than America... so why is the handbrake on the right side? Some other cars: Gen 1 & 2 Mazda RX7 - LEFT side Gen 3 Mazda RX7 - RIGHT side MKIV Toyota Supra - RHD cars - right side, LHD cars - left side

Oh, I thought you were talking about a different kind of Zpression (doesn't quite work with the English/Australian pronunciation of Z ). That is, the continual problems can get very frustrating... my friend had a SA22 RX-7 and every time he fixed something something else went wrong. This can SERIOUSLY affect a person. My Z wasn't as bad but it still caused slight "Zpression"... But it was OK, because I had medication for it - the ignition key :classic: They said it was just a part of owning an old car. True to some extent, but the Skyline has had almost no problems *knocks wood* YET

Hmm, sorry for the confusion. Anyway, that's a good pic Mike but I do not think it is correct for a home-market S30. I think they only had the diagonal "Fairlady Z" emblem, and nothing beneath. I'm not certain though... Got your radar on, Alan?
