Redwing's Car - An Update
Could it be running good now and getting up to temp, maybe burning off some built up oil somewhere? We call it a "redneck tune-up", put some high octane in the tank and run the $^!# out of it.

75 z, want to swap my 4 speed for a 5 speed, best option?
Same story with me, I had a '76 in high school. 25 years later I found one just like it on craigslist. Sold my motorcycle before I had the "big one". Now I have three Zs in my garage. Get this book and I guarantee you can rebuild it yourself if you have some tools. I'd never rebuilt a car motor before, lurked around on this forum followed the book word for word and it turned out fantastic. When I ran into something I wasn't sure about I'd ask for help on here, politely, and always got it figured out. There's guys on here daily that are the original owners of early 70's cars. It's amazing how much information is available on these little cars. Every problem has been fixed 100s of times by these guys. http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Your-Nissan-Datsun-Engine/dp/1931128030

Anyone notice the Konis @ zcsrdepot.com?
I think he's using his own part numbers like MSA does. Looking at the pictures he has on ebay, they're 86-1812s or 86-1811s, rear and fronts. Here's a nice long thread on different struts http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/50944-the-strut-thread-koni-illumina-tokico-carrera-bilstein-ground-control/

Replacing Exhaust system on my 1972 240z
The only issue I had was grinding some material off the transmission where the header was rubbing. That was on my 280 though. I haven't got to the 240 yet but I laid it all out like Jarvo did above and it looked to be identical to the stock exhaust. I sure hope it fits like it's supposed to.

Replacing Exhaust system on my 1972 240z
I really like my MSA system, 6 into 1 header then 2.5. I enjoyed the loudness for a year or so but then I started driving it to work and having to leave out early in the mornings I was a little embarrassed. I had a muffler shop put a resonator in and am happy as ever with the sound. Cost $45.

'73 white european lady
And why all that came loose in the first place? Could weak springs cause all that havoc he's seeing? Or maybe the adjustment lock nuts came loose and the valves got waaaaaay out of spec allowing the lash pads to turn so that the valves were pushed farther down than normal. the rocker tips got out of the channel and were riding on the higher edges?

Engine only runs with starter fluid
No, not at all. I did it so shining them up would be easier. If they do leak there's a way to swap that rubber piece around. I'd have to skim through the DVD to remember how.

There's tons of stuff on youtube.com about SUs. They really are simple. Take the 8 nuts off the intake studs, 4 per carb, and the whole assembly will slide right off. The only connections are the fuel lines and the vacuum advance tube on the front carb. Take a bunch of pictures as you disassemble them. Two separate piles, they are the same but opposite like looking in a mirror.

New 240Z owner!
I've seen, on this forum, cars start off as pile of junk and turn out really nice. You can fix it. Editited part: but you'll like working on cars a lot more by getting a better starting point. That one would take too long and cost more than finding better.

I felt you weren't too happy with your Z when you mentioned selling it. Reading your thread about the motor swap and all is when I first started reading this forum daily and is what put two 240s in my garage. The wooden crate you gave us dimensions to build one was when I knew I had found the right group of people on a forum, sharers not just takers. I never really saw any special differences between the 240s and the 280s until I kept up with your build. You changed my mind, thank you for that.

Classic Z Buyers Guide
That should be watched by anyone considering buying a 240 that's not familiar with these little cars. Check under the bonnet, there may be hair under there.

New 240Z owner!
I think taking them apart helped more than anything for me. Bag and tag everything then go back and clean it all up. Take pictures and let us get first chance then craigslist. The carbs and cylinder head will get your money back.

1972 Datsun 240z steering column cover and 6 screws
Exactly. We won't know what fits your covers. If you bought them off ebay, there's no way to know without going and trying different sizes.

Maybe a company that sells screws could help, hence we can't help you.

'73 front bumper
Yes, clear enough for me. That's what is sorta goofy, it's got the narrow bumper and the the early mounting brackets but they left those big 2.5 MPH brackets on the car. I think if he took those off and put the early brackets all the way back it would look like a '72. The early brackets are in the front mounting hole only, I guess so it would clear the older brackets? How's that for clear? I'm on my first cup of coffee and my medication hasn't started working yet.

'73 front bumper
I got a phone call from a friend who had a friend that had a friend, blah blah blah. I go look at this 10/'72 240 with Webers and some funny looking bumpers. It looks like there has been earlier bumpers put on because the brackets are attached to the backside landing of the bumper. The big brackets aren't touching. I told him he could take those big brackets off and put the bumper back against the car. Did I tell a lie?

Engine only runs with starter fluid
Thanks for that Dave. I have my carbs and intake screwed to the wall above my work bench. I am going to set the levels the best I can before putting them on the car. I need all the information I can get.

Engine only runs with starter fluid
Absolutely! The Just SUs DVD came with my rebuild kits, $180 I believe. Well worth it, new nozzles and hoses are hard to find. The DVD talks about Grose Valves with a ball instead of the pins but they no longer make those so you get the valves with pins. It's kind of funny hearing him talk about how much better the Grose Valves are compared to the pins. No big deal though.
