Did you see my passenger's side lower fender that fits behind the tire? You can have it. It's in that post Mike started for your car repairs. Cliff

WTB: 81 - 83 shift lever Wanted
I'm sure I do, I hoard parts but that is of no use to me so I'd let it go. Now finding it, that's a whole different can of worms! I have a storage building I just cram stuff into but I'll look later today and see if I can put hands on it and let you know. Here's a good read related to what we're talking about. He get's to the shifters about mid page. http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/shifterbushing/index.html

WTB: 81 - 83 shift lever Wanted
The straight ZX rod worked great until I put the 240 rubber boot and outer boot on. So I used the curved 280 rod but like Gnose says it would pop out of 5th and reverse in my car. I ran the ZX rod without the boots and console to put some miles on the new motor. Deal with it later I said. Later came and I noticed these nothches on the bottom of the curved rod. So I started grinding small bits at a time. It still would pop out so I ground more until it was staying in gear. Here's where I ended up, still stout as I've been driving it for a year now without any issues. Here's what the zx shifter did to my old rubber boot, luckily I have a local junkyard with a few 280s I can get stuff from.

But you did modify that OE shfter, right? It looks good shorter like that. i didn't have to cut my tunnel either just a slight bit of material removed from the bottom of the OE shift rod.

1978 280z will not start without ether
Thermotine connection and the others at the themostat housing could be loose or need cleaned brass. How old is the metal fuel filter? Cold start valve has a good connection? Oil pressure sending unit is tightly connected? It's a safety thing that cuts fuel when you have no oil pressure. Can you make the fuel pump run for sure? Sometimes the safety switches and relays keep it from running. You may could straight wire the pump bypassing all those safety switches?

I chucked a screw in my slide hammer and used the head to get behind the bushing and work it out. Dent pulling slide hammers have many uses, albeit shade tree they work.

And I failed to mention the problem with the straight ZX shifters, they tear the inner rubber boot allowing fumes and heat to enter the cabin. The pleather boot will eventually tear going to 5th gear. My expirence. Others may have a solution I'm not able to offer?

Steering wheel is a good deal. Very tempting for me. They sale for $300 refurbished. Good luck with the sale of your parts. 8^)

My expirence with the swap over was the ZX shifter is straighter and wouldn't work with my 240 inner rubber boot as well as the outer pleather boot. I had to grind a little off my 240 rod to work all the gears. Go to datsungarage.com and read the transmission info. There's a Mustang shifter that works with the Borg Warner.

Tracking down a Z
I've been reading this forum for a few years now and have seen people get crappy cars and work on them for years, a couple are still going on. It's like they say, these old cars are like onions, the more you peel away the more tears. If you've found a runner for $2500 BUY IT or tell us about it and somebody'll get it tomorrow.

L24 compression question
I've not done that before but have read automatic transmission fluid works good, a cap full down the spark plug hole. That orange paint on your cam between the lobes makes me think the cam has been cut or modified somehow. The darker lobes are probably not as slick as the shinier ones. They should be like glass. If it ran without oil on the lobes when the OE spray bar broke off it may have roughed up those last three lobes. If the rocker arm pads aren't worn down too bad just give it a valve adjustment and see if they smooth out. Hoping for good results.

I would take a screwdriver handle and tap on the injectors to free up a stuck magnet. I bought a motor with a bad carbeurator and the oil was half gasoline from the stuck carb float dumping all that fuel on the head then it drops down the front cover/timing chain hole straight into the oil pan. The plus side, if you could say that was the gas had washed the head/valve train to look like brand new. But it's not good especially on the valve seals. You can get a piece of hose to use as a stethoscope to hear the injectors clicking. Whichever one doesn't click is stuck, tap it until it starts clicking hopefully or you may have to replace it.

Deja Vu: 1971 Restoration
Not knowing any better I reused the nuts after installing new poly/rubber combo. One of the TC rods fell out of the hole and was dragging on my driveway. Thank goodness I heard it and didn't get on the road. Also all the pieces were in my driveway so I put it back on then took the advice of Zkars and "double nutted" both sides. The OE nuts are one use type. You could also use nylon lock nuts.

Clutch help in 71 with 5 speed please.
I apologize. I have no idea who you're referencing. The one I thought of is spelt with a "U". Your "little brain" is waaaay larger than mine so if you'd correct my thinking I would be appreciative. I like to learn almost as much as I like to eat. I think if I learn something daily I am better off, of course, and there's nobody but you and Phillip that I will follow blindly to the end. Cliff

Bats need some A-1, otherwise they taste like crow and I eat a lot of crow.

Coolant temperature
That heater core scares the crap out of me to. As long as it sits on the same spot on the gauge I'll leave it alone. Those old 240 gauges are finicky, my 280 is pretty accurate, moving with the cars situation. Higher in traffic, lower on the freeway. Have you tried removing the sensor from the thermostat housing and sanding off the calcium/crud, clean it up the connection to?

Tail Gaters...
Throw them out your driver's window. I like to squirt my windshield washer on them. If I knew it wouldn't eat my paint, and it would!, I'd fill my washer bottle with brake fluid. I'm beginning to like the fireball idea out the tail pipe.

I went from a '72 camaro to a '76 280 and never went back to American heavy except an F-150 p/u to haul my mower. I swear the two doors on that camaro weighed as much as my whole 280! My Mom has a crown Victoria with heavy doors and everytime she rides in my Camry I have to bitch when she slams my doors. She's gonna bust out my windows!
