  1. Bringing the topic back on track, I agree that those look like the wires that connect to the reverse switch on the right side of the transmission. (They connect just to the left of the field of view in your picture.)
  2. Let's see.. Old lady, that make her about what, 45? (I read your profile to check your age...) One of my sons tells me that all of his friends have gone out of their way to tell him what a strange/weird/ugly shade of green my car is painted. So it got their attention... My oldest daughter still hates the car because her first several boyfriends were, from time to time, as interested in it as they were in her... Before I put the badges back on the car people used to tailgate me through town trying to figure out: "What is that thing?" Some guy in a BMW Z4 chased me for over a mile to get close enough to read the badges, then turned another way. Apparently a Datsun was unworthy to be seen following... So yes, it gets some attention. Not as much drooling as an old Mopar or other muscle car gets, but it attracts attention.
  3. I can't say for sure with the Z car, but years ago a cheap muffler shop broke the EGR pipe on my 74 Volvo, and they plugged it off rather than fixing it. The car would never idle properly after that. Apparently Volvo ran the EGR into the idle speed circuit, and without the exhaust gases the car always idled too fast. As I said, I don't know for sure, but without the EGR valve operational the oxygen level in the intake will be higher than the fuel injection computer expects.
  4. I will second that... Tony D is cruel. My garage isn't even heated. But I am far enough South that it hasn't started snowing here yet. Our BAD months are December, January, and February. I still plan on leaving the car in the garage until April or May however, just to give the rain time to wash away the road salt.
  5. Not counting mine, :cheeky: I think that I have seen perhaps 3 or 4 since I bought my car back in 2002. One of those was at a hotel parking lot in Smyrna Tennessee, so it is conceivable that he was going to some sort of Nissan event at the factory. My next door neighbor has a 280ZX that he got last winter. It runs, but seems to need a floor... But then we were talking about 240's right?
  6. I is absolutely not an age thing. My 14 year old daughter corrects my wife every time that she says "warsh" instead of "wash" (A common mid-western American accent sort of thing.)
  7. I think that with our car's older style "cold in the bottom - hot out the top" cooling system there will be some coolant circulation just by convection so long as the fans are running and cooling the fluid in the radiator. In either case pump running or not, as soon as the thermostat closes all circulation stops.
  8. Great news! Hopefully it was just some joy riding kids. I have a friend who's Astro van was stolen twice, and both times he got it back mostly undamaged, after it was found abandoned. Neither time was anyone arrested for the crime... (at one time 80's G.M. products were popular to steal because they were common, and it was easy...) We will pray that they didn't tear it up.
  9. Stories like this scare me... I never even lock my car doors, mostly because every time that someone has broken into one of my cars it cost me more to repair the damage they did getting in the car than the value of what they took. Unlike my wife however, I never leave my car unlocked, with the keys in the ignition, in a bad part of town... But then she only did that with that one particular Oldsmobile that had no paint... I wonder why?:cheeky: The really sad part is that we had that car for years, and eventually had to give it away.
  10. My kids have been known to watch them on the Internet. (At least that is what they SAY they are watching...) The only Anime that I ever watched all the episodes of was Cowboy Bebop.
  11. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by "word!!!" I don't understand the contextual reference. (Even if I agree with what I think is your opinion that this didn't deserve to be such a focus of attention.)
  12. Apparently California law is different that Indiana law :stupid: (Of course...) I have been through this kind of situation once, on the other end. I gave a running car away to one of those charities who are always asking for cars. They sold the car to someone who immediately curb-stoned it to some unsuspecting 19 year old kid. Six months later I received a letter from the Indianapolis Police Department informing me that they had RECOVERED MY STOLEN CAR!!! Under Indiana laws the "title" that you have would be considered INVALID, and the car would still legally belong to the person whose name is printed on the title. (The last registered owner) The gentleman who had bought the car (last) eventually tracked me down, and I ended up signing a (notarized) power of attorney form so that he could apply for a duplicate title (which still had my name on it) and then transfer that title to himself. To add insult to injury, IPD would not release that car to ANYONE except ME!! I wouldn't drive that car from Tennessee to California for all the tea in China. California law may be different from Indiana law, but you can bet your life that somewhere between those states there will be a state that is just like here. I have had more than one friend who went through this, and ended up with a car that they could never register, or legally drive. (I.e. a parts car...) My rule is: NEVER pay for a car until you are presented with a CLEAN title. One without anyone else's name on the purchaser line, and without any alterations or erasures.
  13. Yes, 1 1/16 inch socket will fit just fine. By the way, the socket needs to be a thin wall, not an impact socket. That is it does if you are using the stock front pulley. An impact socket will not fit in the opening in the pulley. (I drove myself to distraction trying to find a 27mm socket back when I disassembled my engine.)
  14. The brakes always win. (Unless they are bad.) All cars have four wheel brakes, but most cars only have 2 wheel drive. And most cars can stop from 60MPH (100 KPH, whatever) in a much shorter distance than they can accelerate to 60 MPH. The lethal part that he was discussing is that if you were using the hand throttle to hold the engine at, say 4000RPM under load (80 MPH) when you drop the clutch the engine will accelerate past the red line and break something before you have the chance to push the hand throttle back to the idle position. The hand throttle idea works fine on Diesel cars because the fuel injection pump is a governor of sorts, but with gas engines it is a really bad idea. BTW: I have read many times that the cars sold in the U.S. had those removed by the dealer for liability reasons. So if the car was on Craig's list it was more likely one of those early 80's after-market cruse controls that everyone else here talks about.
  15. To answer your question: No that hole should not be there. It looks like the header has punctured the head and broken out enough material to open up a water passage. It might be repairable, but will require that the head be cleaned and welded. That looks expensive to me.
  16. I bought one from Advance Auto that just barely fits in the space at the left front of the engine bay: http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=23210&cat=500&ppuser=3035 I am not sure how similar it is to the part that Motorsport sells, but it looks about the same. I am not sure that it is really needed. My radiator stays full, and there isn't much fluid in that tank.
  17. Ok, How about if we try to apply some logic to this? (A dangerous proposition when talking about marketing...) The Haynes manual lists the cam lobe lift at 7mm which for the sake of this discussion is about .276 inches. Motorsport auto lists their "Stage VI" performance camshaft at .620/.624 inch lift. A difference of .344 inches (Which is more than the stock lift?) The Stage V is shown at .560 lift. (.284 higher lift) Both of those cams are listed as intended for racing use. If a 3/4 race cam is 75% of the way from stock to stage V that would make it .489, which is what Motorsport calls a Stage II cam. On the other hand, if they actually meant it was 3/4 of the lift of a Stage VI cam that puts it at .465, which is a Stage I cam. In either case, both of those are said to have good to moderate idle with a power range for the Stage I of 1500-5000 RPM, and the Stage II of 2000-6000 RPM. I doubt the cam is causing your hesitation. More likely it is somewhere else. Just my opinion however...
  18. My youngest child is 14, the oldest is 23. Do they qualify? (I think they could all be members here, except I haven't let any of them drive the Z... yet... Maybe when they are older.)
  19. Welcome indeed! Wonderful that your Z runs. I have had mine for 5 years, and it has only run for the past 2 months. (You will find others like me here...) Try the search function for information on floor rust. You will find out more than you ever wanted to know. May all your experiences with the Z be educational or fun, preferably both!
  20. I have often wondered about those terms myself. For example the cam that I put in my car has an advertised lift of 0.460 inches and a duration of 0.222 somethings (duration units were not specified. Does that make it a stage I, II, or 3/4, 1/4, I don't know.
  21. I don't know about the rubber lines part. There are two fuel lines , tank to engine and return engine to tank. The lines run with the rear brake line in clamps above the drive shaft, and transmission. If you use rubber hoses to splice the pieces together you will end up with sections of hose above those parts. When (not if) the hoses deteriorate you will end up having to take down the drive shaft, and perhaps even pulling the engine and transmission to repair the leak. Personally, I just bought long straight pieces of standard aluminized brake line from the local auto parts store and bent it to suit. I used flare fittings to join the line pieces together, but I expect that compression fittings would have worked just as well. I remember that it was 3 different sizes, with the fuel lines being the largest and perhaps the smallest, but I have no notes on what sizes they were. (My brake lines were rusted to dust.) As for being easy... you have to pull the engine, transmission, and differential to get to the hard steel lines, but once you have done all that it is only a long tedious job. Good luck!

I hope it is as impressive as the hype, because at the prices that have been rumored, there are very few buyers, and a lot of really impressive cars available.
  23. Indeed. Very nice paint! Almost enough to make me regret my color choice. Almost, but not entirely.
  24. On my 71 there was an inline fuse for the fan, and I think that it was a 10 amp fuse. On my car it was blown, which I suspect had to do with the fact that someone had used that circuit for the air conditioner clutch. In any event 500ma isn't going to be enough to make the fan spin.
  25. I have that same exhaust, but with a 6-2-1 header. I had some trouble with the pipe rattling on the differential mount cross-member, but other than that it was easy enough to install. As for the sound... It is really loud. (A little too loud to suit me.) When I drive in town I tend to stay in the highest gear that the engine will pull just to keep the noise down. I guess that I could splice in a glasspack somewhere to take some of the edge off. Perhaps I will get used to it eventually.
