Am I missing a return spring on my 4-screw roundtop?

Featured Replies

I recently have an issue crop up with the car not returning to idle after I let up on the gas unless I tap the gas pedal a few times. I traced it to the front carburetor. The return spring attached to the heat shield is present but maybe I have it's attached to the wrong hole on the carburetor linkage or maybe something is missing. I've attached two photos. the close up one shows where there appears to be a mounting hole on the linkage possibly for a spring (note black arrow). If I reset this lever position manually, the front carburetor returns to idle.

Jeff,

I am running my OE 4-screws, here are the locations of the return spring connections (yellow pencil):

Thank Jim,

That should fix the problem.

Jeff

Jim has it correct for the spring mount. Jim also shows a small piece of safety wire to help keep the loose lever from rattling and bouncing around. That lever is for the emissions linkage.

Or you could use a zip-tie instead of wire. Like what this guy did: 😀

Indeed, but is does not look as good nor is it a long term fastener with all the heat.

I hang my head in shamed for use of the lowly zip tie in this application. At least I’ve never melted one. Yet…..

I've got a zip tie there as well. A Z specialist in my area put it on when he did some work on my car and I meant to ask him why, now I know.

Some entrepreneur type will now invent a lovely 3D printed clip thingy, that will look like it belongs, to do this job and will sell millions. Not me.

I suppose it could be contrived as routine maintenance, "Time to change out the zip tie"
