Light refresh of a 5-speed

Well, I'll get the car on my QuickJacks this weekend and then lift the tranny into position, bolt it up on its crossmember and see which shaft fits. I'm hoping it's at least one of them.

If you have a rear sway bar, install it after the shaft. Much easier to get to the diff bolts.

One more question on this topic: Is the 5-speed slightly longer than the 4-speed? I have three driveshafts and two of them are a little bit shorter than the other and I want to get started on reconditioning whichever one will go into my car.

If the difference is about 1-1/2", then you probably have a Series 1 shaft (shorter of the three) and two from a later model 240Z.

On the Series 1 240Z, the differential was mounted slightly forward of the rear wheel axle centerline. The 280Z, with the R200 differential, used a different shaft with non-serviceable universal joints.

The early series 1 is about 21,26" (540mm) between uni-joint centers

The later 240Z is 22.5" (572mm) between uni-joint centers

Small correction to series 1 lengte. 21" ---> 21,26"

The B transmissions should be the same length. The A 4 speed is slightly shorter, but also keep in mind the differential was moved rearward with the B thus changing the length as well.

I don't want to use a scraper as I won't have angles to prevent gouging the aluminum. Any recommendations?

It's personal preference, I think. Some people would use a thumb, finger, and a razor blade. Others some sort of cobbled together scraper.

HEY!

The propeller shaft dimensions are in the FSM's. Here's what I found in what I think is the 1970 FSM, and the 1976 FSM. 1972 didn't have the length listed for some reason. Don't forget the 2+2.
