Anyone want new door cores made out of fiberglass for the vinyl kits?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought the vinyl kit for my door panels from Classic Datsun Motorsport. The quality exceeded my expectations! Then came the problem. I discovered that my door panel pressed board was kind of wonky... :ermm: Here is the good news; I have a friend in Oregon who has a company that manufactures parts for vintage Porsches. His quality is impeccable. If he can't make it better or as good as OEM, he just will keep trying till he does. He made door panels for my 914 with a fiberglass core and new vinyl that looks EXACTLY like the factory panels. They will never warp because they are fiberglass and could care less about moisture. He has agreed to make door panel cores out of fiberglass for our early Z cars. He needs excellent core panels to work with though... :disappoin I got crap.

Anyone have a set of great ones he can use? The good news is that when he makes a new product he usually has a group buy and sells the first batch at his cost.

You can see examples of his work at his website 914rubber.com

I would definitely be interested in buying a set if not too costly. Any idea of a ballpark figure? My panels are still on the car but look like they may be warped.

He sells the 914 reproduction fiberglass core at $105 for the pair retail. As I said, he would very probably do a group buy to sell out the first run.

Full replacement panels? I have seen a few NOS panels in black and blue selling on eBay for $900+. I do ok but I'm not stupid. Where are these replacement panels coming from?

I think he should have no problem selling many. The price is great and it is a part that slowly fails simply from ambient moisture.

Guys since this has always been a problem to be able to re-wrap the damaged panels we started to reproduce new panels and the project has stalled out several times and I have recently gotten it back on track so we can have new panels. I will keep you al posted on the progress.

Les,

Would we need to send our metal trim pieces to you for fitting to the new panels? And, approximately how much for the panels alone, and/or for a turn-key pair fitted with your covers and fuzzy?

Thanks, Mike

Let me know directly when you get to production Les... I have nothing on my driver side and I am just leaving the passenger side with the original tired upholstery until this project bears fruit. My entire interior is new, dash included and an autographed Mr. K glove box door. Just waiting on door panels... 80

post-23513-14150819950553_thumb.jpgI don't know if I'm violating any forum rules but I got a set of fiberglass panel fully upholstered for $400.00 for the set. I got them form the Hybred Z site.

Again, I hope mentioning them is not a no-no but they were great.

The guys name is Pete Robinson. He also has some with a raised speaker opening.

Just my .02

count me on as well!!!

Cesar, the 280Z panels are different from the 240Z panels. It would be an effort to make them work.

I love the kit too! The fabric is little thicker than original one, so it is harder to install. However it will last long time!!!!!!!

I've seen Pete's work and it is top notch. I may do those as a temporary measure as I have a completely restored interior and no door panels. But frankly, when Les and his gang do something it is perfect in most cases. In the end, I will probably go with what Les comes up with...

Here are some pictures of Pete's work...

Do you know Pete's user name at Hybridz?

It's Rayven14 or something like that. Go to HybridZ, find the interior section, There is a thread about door panels with speaker pods. Not my cup of tea, but Pete is willing to do them in factory flavor as well. $250 + shipping
