Comparing Zs to Porsches?

Arne

Recommended Posts

I've owned my '71 240Z since it was new and 914s for over 30 years. I've had my '70 Porsche 914-6 for 20 years. For what it's worth, I find the only way the two are similar is that they both have four wheels and run on gasoline. Porsches and Datsuns were designed and marketed for vastly different purposes. While they are both an enjoyable way to get from point A to point B, they differ in ride, handling, and need for maintenance.

Either can be a hole in the driveway into which you throw huge amounts of money - the Porsche, however tends to be a deeper hole.

There was a point in my life where I could have afforded the "Porsche experience" but it just boiled down to how pissed am I gonna get when my car gets a door ding? I love 911s, the older ones especially but the "Porsche experience" tax just doesn't outweigh being willing to treat the car like a car at the level of discretionary income I'm prepared to spend for a weekend driver. When I hit the lottery, that may change, who knows?

Ok, here's a few shots of the new toy. Have to admit that after looking at the shot in my garage, it's pretty insane. I have the best wife in the world! Z may be gone to a new home on Friday. :disappoin post-9737-14150817144211_thumb.jpg

As far as a comparison, I'm really early to the 930 experience, but I would have to say there is none at this point. Two way different cars. I really hope I'm doing the right thing. I keep having second and third thoughts about parting with my Z. I really love it and it's been a great car, but just felt I had done all I was going to do with it and someone else could enjoy it more and continue to improve it.

Mike, sold the red Viper GTS to buy the 997. Selling the Z to buy the 930. The 997 is just as different from the 930 as the 930 is from the Z.

Best,

Bob

Well, I'm going to get pissed if I get a door ding in any of my cars, whether Datsun, Porsche, VW, BMW, etc. I don't understand that comment at all. Porsche or Datsun, I will treat them the same. They are cars, after all, and they were designed to be driven.

This may be a little harsh but you wanted a comparison. Never liked the brand nor does the wife and that is why they make different cars for different tastes. Where I am from during the summer months there are far fewer S30's on the road than your typical Porsche. Value is not important to me it's the look and style that count.

Nice car Arne!! My dad was checking out my flickr recently and told me my recent scale model build is very similar to your car :) Although this one is a turbo and I did the dark reddish-brown interior. Also finished this truck and volvo wagon recently (240z engine bay shots included as well). Getting ready to start a display for my 1/24th collection. Going to create a 2 level parking garage with fluorescent lights etc.
