Nice video. When you watch the section around 1:26 you have to ask yourself who was craziest, the drivers or the public. The car slams into the tree and they don't even flinch. Certainly gives another meaning to diehard fans.

But the question is why does that matter if it's on the left side of the steering wheel?

Racing in the old days required a running start. Upon reaching your car, putting it in first gear at nearly the same time you start the engine ensured a quicker start off the line.
