  1. So this is where I am after 6 gallons of white vinegar and one gallon of SuperClean. Clearly the SuperClean is more effective, primarily because I had misdiagnosed that varnish as rust. Also, I'm starting to think that this tank is too beat up to knock back into shape. I've started looking for a replacement that is dent, varnish, and rust free. If I can get one for a good price I might bail on this one.
  2. So that's mostly varnish in there, not rust like I originally thought, which explains why the vinegar isn't getting it off as quickly as I had hoped. I put a gallon of SuperClean in it yesterday along with my box of 100 3/8" nuts and gave myself a great core workout for 20 minutes. It's sitting on saw horses waiting for me to spend more time on it, but I am concerned that the SuperClean might be more likely to make it rust than the vinegar because I am not sure how their acidities compare. Also, I've been looking around and found 3 gas tanks at wrecking yards for under $200 (+ shipping). Wondering if it makes more sense to buy a replacement if I one of them is rust- and dent-free.
  3. Thanks. That will be handy. I got about 50% of the metal clean by tumbling a box of half inch nuts in it for 15 minutes (count them going in and out and have a magnet ready), so it's not as bad as I had thought. I am currently dehumidifying it and will fill it up with white vinegar again once it's dry. That will sit for the rest of the week I think. Then I'll descale it again.
  4. This should give you a sense of what the inside of my tank looks like:
  5. My '73 has a smog system. To me, performance means the cleanest emissions I can get with the maximum power, handling, and mileage possible. It's not a track car. Could be wrong, but the performance hit should be negligible considering the rest of the mods I'm doing. From the NJ MVD:

  7. Got it out: It's currently sitting next to my garage dehumidifier with three gallons of white vinegar in it and all the holes plugged. Hopefully I can manage time to work on it every night this week, but it's raining like crazy and the humidity is insane. Thanks for the tips on reconditioning it. Once I have the thing detoxed I'll start working on that.
  8. Well, I had intended to replace all that stuff anyway, but jeeeeeeeze. So tell me about reconditioning a gas tank. Should I just buy a replacement or is taking it to a radiator shop worth while? It's dented and needs knocking back into shape, and this is making me think it should be thoroughly flushed and treated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  10. Drained my tank tonight. Last I checked this is not the correct color for gasoline: Also, it doesn't smell like gasoline. I don't know what kind of additives are in this but it's fumed up my house to the point where I am concerned about my children's future life potential.
  11. I've seen some headers with smog ports. Is that going to be an option on these? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I'm looking into what it would take to create an arm for the right side to match the OEM mirror. If anyone has a beat up original that they could donate to the cause I have an engineer waiting in the wings to give me an assessment on getting the parts manufactured. 14. I'm wondering if maybe it's time to invest in a compressor. A big one. The electric grinder does the job, but I just did the math on stripping wheels and I'm wondering if home media blasting is the way to go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Did you ever finish?
  16. Worked on stripping the floors a little tonight. Not too much because I only had about 30 minutes, but the driver's side isn't as crazy rusted as I thought it was. Still gotta get in there under the seat brace, but I'm thinking I have less metal to cut out than I thought. Still beat up and full of rivet holes, though.
  17. He said they came off a 240z and he had some random other Datsun bits with them. If they aren't, the $30 I spent won't kill me.
  18. Picked up some SUs cheep from a Volvo parts vendor! Anyone know how we're supposed to post photographs (I.e. Is there a particular gallery or thread)?
  19. Down to 55% so I'm going! Just sent you a direct message.
  20. Not if you aren't restoring.
  21. Last night I marked all of the holes in my engine bay that didn't have something screwed into them when I got the car (remember it was half disassembled when it arrived). Next step is to identify which ones can be welded up and which ones will need to stay.
  22. Looks like rain for 8 hours, as of this afternoon. I'll probably decide at the last minute. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Cool. What kind of turnout should I expect? Are we talking like three S30s or 100?
  24. Anyone going? I'm considering it but that's a lot of driving from north east NJ. http://www.njzclub.com/#one
