  1. The U joints aren't that hard to do. You need plenty of penetrating fluid, a screwdriver, and I would suggest a mallet. You have to get the C clips off the ends and then knock one side out and remove the cups with the needle bearings. Be sure to mark the yolks so that you can match them together as they were. make sure also that you get greasable U joints (they will have Zerk fittings on them) so you can properly lube them. Also, it might not be a bad idea to bring the halfshafts to a drive shaft place and have them checked to ensure they are properly balanced. I don't necessarily think that you have to do the driveshaft as well, however if you are going through the trouble to do the halfshafts, why not do them all. Nothing worse then doing kind of the same job twice, when you can just do it all at once and know that you won;t have to be under there doing it all over again.
  2. yeah thats where I think I;d be targeting first...the trans. My old 78 had quite a whine in the trans....
  3. perhaps a wasted throwout bearing?
  4. Wow I started quite a thread with this one. let me finish getting through the replies and I can enlighten everyone on what took place. Also, yes we are still living together because we are tied to a lease until march. soooo, I have to either find a roomate or she has to leave and continue to pay beacuse I dont thing that I can swing the whole place myself without having to drink tap water and eat ramon noodles morning noon and night. Although that might be better than what I am having to deal with now.
  5. Right now I am really digging the post I have been in the garage for quite some time now consistantly. This baby is going to be done alot sooner than I expected. my next worry is can I swing the bills at the crib on my own or will I need another roomate
  6. Thanks for the kinds words everyone and it really is a tough situation for everyone involved. I would love to send her flowers however I have to respect the fact that she has someone else in her life now and she is big on that. I need to let some time pass before I can begin that friendly gesture because she may feel funny about me doing that. This is a hard situation to handle because we are still living together and will be for a little bit. Things will work out for whatever the best situation is for us. I have though been pounding the pavement in the garage and tearing it up. The battery well is just about done. I need to grind the welds and clean everything up then its on to the passenger floor support and where the hole is in the firewall for the harness. Once the welding is done, its time to put all the freshly sandblasted and painted parts on the car and start getting her ready for paint and such and get the interior back in. The pics are in the gallery!
  7. All I can say guys is make sure that you pay attention to little things that matter to a girl in a relationship. Send her flowers, leave her little notes, and never not tell her how you feel about her and how she makes you feel. Don;t get all caught up in the big picture and let things slide. It really makes a differance. unfortunately we work together and her new man sent her roses and now she has them on her desk. Talk about salt in the wound.
  8. could be worse, you could have this to deal with
  9. man the ladies can be so effed. No offense to any on the site, however my 4 year live in GF that I was completely secure and under the impression that we were to marry has just ended things between us and is now dating the guitarist from a band that I was the archivist for....for over a year and a half! even more efffed is that we are tied in a lease together until march :devious: Looks like I will have plenty of time now to finish the car
  10. MSA has them listed in the catalog at $ 4.78 a piece....PN 24-5091
  11. If victoria british or MSA here in the states does not carry them perhaps you can go to a company called Timkin. They certainly could match one up for you.

hey man nice welds! def looks like you are using gas
  13. You know I felt the same way however thats the beauty of the internet. I know that if I had seen the donor car and it was rust free, I would have been contemplating how to bring it home and where to store it. Thankfully I never even had to see it. so the last things left to weld are the passenger floor support and the drivers side lower rear corner. Oh and a small spot in the firewall where the harness runs through on the passenger side. It started to rot out because of the battery well. If I had an english wheel I would have no problem fabricating these patches so no more unfortunate Z cars have to be cut apart, however I guess in some form, the donor car is breathing life into another.
  14. These will go up in the gallery however I thought I'd toss them up here for discussion. These are pics of the donor battery well from Roger Schmidt at the Z barn. Cost was 122 bucks however he sends the entire corner from the strut tower back to the firewall section. It requires alot of cutting and fitting, however its an alternative to not having to custom fabricate something depending on the severity of your rust.
