    Sometimes, when filling a drained cooling system, an air pocket is formed at the highest point in the cooling system, which is the t-stat housing. You've got to clear that air pocket in order for the coolant to flow and cool properly, thus the term "burp." Some folks choose to heartily squeeze the upper radiator hose to create a bit of slosh that works the bubble out after a few squeezes. Others choose to release the hose clamp at the t-stat housing, pull the hose back just enough to let the air escape, reposition, and tighten the clamp. I like the second method as you are sure the pocket is gone. Hope this helps! Frank

    I posted this question some months back, but after reading the replies to the original query, I am beginning to think maybe my coil is responsible for my tach reading 500rpm too high at idle. Could this be a possibility? Frank

    You possibly could have a ballast resister problem. I say possibly because typically it either works or it doesn't work. Your '71 may be different than my '70 in that regard, as I have a 4-wire tach and yours is a 3-wire. As the BRs are pretty cheap, you might try replacing it if you run out of other otpions. Frank
  6. All of the above, plus don't mess with the crank. A lightened flywheel will provide plenty of fast revs....unless you're going to drag race it, then a heavier flywheel is called for. My Z has been phenomenal with the Pertronix system. It's relatively inexpensive and, so far, has been bullet-proof. I recommend it highly. And stick with the NKG plugs. Frank

    Hello, all. My wife and I are contemplating a move to my birth state, California, or to North Carolina. What are the emissions requirements (i.e. a cut-off year) for old cars? Hmm. This could be a question for any state, couldn't it? In Texas, a car 25 years old or older need not take the emissions test. :classic: How about some other states....? Frank

    I have a set of trip-Mikunis (40mm) on my L24. They're a set-and-forget carb system, unless you track the car. Hard right-hand turns (on the track...around town, you'll never notice) floods the engine and require the carbs to be modified to prevent that. Street MPG is about 16, while road MPG is 22+, the way I drive it. My Z has a performance cam, headers and the E31 head, stock block and pistons, Twice-pipes, Pertronix, 5-speed (82-83). It scoots pretty good and sounds delicious. Frank

    RP, as well as Redline, provides drastic improvement over standard lubricants. I use RP in engine, tranny and R180. Excellent products. Frank

    Drain the gas, blow out gas lines w/compressed air, replace fuel filter and any rubber hoses that feel hard or are cracked. Replace oil and filter*. Drain and replace coolant and check hoses. Remove spark plugs and turn engine over by hand using the crank pulley bolt (27mm) to insure engine hasn't seized. If plugs look black or are wet, replace them. Use NKG plugs only. *Remove the valve cover and when filling with oil, take one quart and soak down the cam with it. Reinstall valve cover before cranking. If all is well and timing isn't off, it should start just fine. Frank

    It could be the rubber bushings at the ends of the sway bar. Just a guess. Frank
  20. You could have a kink (dent) or other obstruction in the line from the electric to the filter. If your pump is running and not delivering gas, you've two options: clean the lines (via air or other chemical means) or replace a pump that is running but not performing. Have you run the pump directly into a container (short of the main fuel delivery line to the front)? This may help you determine whether the problem is a line blockage or a pump problem. Frank
  21. While on a screamin' fast vacation? trip to SoCal last week, I met Fred by happenstance at a car show. He and several others had shown up at the show (they were invited to show, but were not judged). Fred and Betty were there in their 10th, Roger was there in his '71 w/L28, another Fred was there in his scissor-doored 350Z and more. Fred was delighted to meet a Z enthusiast from Texas. We spoke of folks known to us both, i.e. Mad Mike, Walt Stephenson, Dave Moreale, et al. He gave me a copy of the Road & Track Magazine wherein the GT-R "spanked" the Z06 and Porsche. If you haven't seen the article, it's worth a read, even though Nissan paid R&T to write it. Fred mentioned the effort to begin a Datsun museum, but because of time constraints on my end, we didn't get to flesh it out at all. It's a worthwhile endeavour, no doubt, so if possible, ante up to the amount you can afford. Mr. K (99) and Fred (80+) won't be around too much longer, so let's help make everything come together as best we can. Regards,

    A compression test should be done with all spark plugs removed, carbs wedged open at WOT. If the numbers you posted weren't taken using this procedure, do it again...you've gotten false readings.

    Mine is two pipes all the way back. I've noticed a fall-off in power from about 6200 up to 7000 rpm. She's stronger than Granny's breath up to 6200, though. Frank
