  1. Given a constant speed, the torque required to maintain that speed from the driveshaft rearward should be constant.
  2. Have you considered exhaust resonance or a loose exhaust hanger? Since it goes away in 5th at the same speed, the only thing that's changed is engine RPM. You may want to check the noise that way again, but in third gear, then to 4th and on to 5th. See if the noise comes back....
  3. With 50 (or is it 57?) States and the possibility of having 50 or 57:stupid: different requirements for emissions testing, it would be interesting to know what the requirements are for each of the Several States. I'll start with :love:Texas: No requirement for emissions testing when the vehicle is 25 or more years of age. If licensed with "Classic" or "Antique" plates, there is no requirement for a safety inspection.
  4. Whether it's a Black Pearl or a look-alike, I'd think you got a great car for the $$. Just do your research here and ask questions BEFORE you go spending a lot of time and treasure.
  5. That's the crankcase vent hose. In olden times, it discharged through an oiled filter to the atmosphere.
  6. I've had excellent success using Royal Purple 20W50. No leaks, no drama. Of course, it's hot in this part of the world and a different viscosity rating might produce some problems.
  7. Rough estimate... Early 240Zs weighed in at about 2400 lbs. They porked up a bit each year until the 260Z in '74 when they weighed approx 2600 lbs. The 280Zs were close to 2800 lbs. Actual numbers are out there, but I'm too lazy to find 'em... but these are close.
  8. My 01/70 build is flat, like the '69 cars. No threaded hole.
  9. It's magnetic, therefore it's ferrous metal and easily weldable. I doubt it'd be anything exotic like 410 SS. Find a local guy that can TIG weld it. You should be OK.
  10. I've participated in and helped run quite a few shows. The serious contenders usually arrive 2 hours or more before the official start time. Showing their cars is a big part of their lives and they get there, in some cases, at day-break. It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. Glad you enjoyed the day!
  11. Dennis is exactomundo! If you get the car home and discover it's a hopeless rust-bucket that will cost 10 large or more to get right, you can part it out for way more than the $500 it'll cost you. Go for it.
  12. That looks a little like SrBigbutt's Z. Could be totally wrong about that, though....
  13. Owned/driven by Troy Hogan out of Houston. Placed third in the Decatur, Tx race a few weeks ago and had the fastest race lap of the field.... http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs054.snc4/35051_1496187012277_1462143499_1277179_581731_n.jpg

Or maybe they knew the weather stripping wasn't all that good.
  15. Thanks, Mike. I'd forgotten about that improvement.
  16. Joke: Do you know why you don't see too many 50 cent pieces anymore? The RodeWay drivers married them all......

Be sure your gas is fresh. Anything much older than 6 months is iffy with the ethanol mix unless you used Stabil or similar. Try what ncolz suggested, but with new gas.
  18. That's the relay for the disgronificator valve.
  19. That's a tough problem, Koalia. You might find PB Blaster effective after a few days of soaking, but methinks having a machine shop drill the tubes and retaining nuts would be your best and safest bet. Even after a couple of years, those nuts will lock in like they've been welded, and after nearly 40 years, well, they might as well been cast together.
  20. Can someone please explain how the throttle linkage works on this car? http://speedhunters.com/archive/2010/06/30/car-spotlight-gt-gt-pike-s-peak-datsun-240z.aspx
  21. You've likely got loose grounds out the wazoo and a few loose connections, maybe even a short or two, to boot. Get yourself a FSM and start with one circuit at a time. Tedious, I know.

Howdy, Ryan. Show us some pics, will ya?
  23. Very neat and clean.... Good job!
  24. Just get a set of sockets (metric) that run from about 6mm up through 17mm and combo wrenches in the same sizes. No need to get onesy-twosies as you'll need 'em all at some point in your Z career....
  25. Oooh! Get another one.
