Early Shift Boots
Hey Dan, Thanks a lot for the dimensions and info on the material. I shipped LBO730 a shift boot a couple of weeks ago. He said he has sourced some material that is very close to original. He has not worked on the pattern yet due to the cold in his garage. I will keep you posted when we have something. In the mean time, keep an eye out for a suitable grommet replacement. Marty

Early Shift Boots
I have never seen a real grommet in person (since mine is missing), so I am not exactly sure what to look for. Does anyone have a picture of just the grommet itself, and the dimensions for it?? If we had a picture, with dimensions, we could check with some suppliers. Thanks, Marty

Early Shift Boots
I was just thinking about the grommet situation while scanning EBay. I saw an auction for an A/C grommet and wonder if that or another grommet on the car would be a suitable substitute. It's hard to judge the size of the grommet on the EBay ad though. We need to find a source for the one pictured in arne's car. Hope you don't mind that I re-posted your picture Arne. By the way, I mailed an old early shift boot off to LBO730 to copy the pattern a couple of weeks ago. I will post pictures when I get one back. Marty

5 speed in a 4 speed question
I modified a shifter that looks very close to yours and works fine. The shift book covers up the ugly weld. In looking at Bart's from the shift kit, I think that would still interfere with the trans tunnel. I found that you need to move the shaft position more toward the rear of the pivot point, instead of coming out of the top of the pivot point. Marty

Thanks. I am pretty sure mine came out of a '78 automatic. Marty

5 speed in a 4 speed question
There are a number of reasons that I don't really want to use an R200. This is a track car, so: 1) I don't want to add any un-necessary weight. 2) My engine isn't that powerful that the R180 won't hold up. 3) The R200 has a non-symetrical shape to it. It is fatter on the drivers's side. In hard cornering, the half shaft can bottom out and cause handling problems. This is my biggest concern. Marty

5 speed in a 4 speed question
The one I picked up looks just like yours and does not look big enough to be an R200. I does however have the splined connection. I was hoping to use my current half shafts since I just replaced the U-joints with Spicers. What I would really rather do is replace the diffy with R-180 LSD in 3.9, 4.11 or 3.7 ratio, but I haven't found one yet. That would really help wake up the L28, ZX 5speed combo. If I can't find one, I guess I will pop in the 3.54. Marty

5 speed in a 4 speed question
Hey Stephan, Is the 3.54 from the '78 an R180 or R200? Did it come with the splined connection to the half shafts? I picked up one of those last year, but have not had a chance to install it. The guy I bought it from said it was an R180. I was hoping to stay with an R180 so I didn't have to change the moustasch bar, etc. Marty

Brakes, Brakes, Brakes, and More Brakes!!
Cross drilled brakes do tend to crack. And if you intend to put the car on the track, where they build excessive heat, they WILL crack and could break apart. If you need the extra cooling, the better choice would be to do the Toyota 4x4 brake conversion with the 300ZX vented rotors. My two cents Marty

I was able to get an original passenger side door panel. I took that into an auto paint supplier. He custom matched the color for me. It is so dead on in the match that you can't tell it was originally a black panel and it blends in perfectly with the rest of the interior. You mentioned that you bought OEM seat covers? Where did you get them from? The ones on the car right now are from MSA. I am not happy with them since the grain of the vinyl is not even close to the original and the pattern is not exact either. Last year I snagged an NOS set of Nissan covers off Ebay. They have a couple of unusual stains on them. I need to see if I can get the stains out. If not, I will probably end up dyeing them with SEM too and put them on this year. If you need a drivers side quarter window trim, I think I have an intact extra one. Shoot me a PM if you are interested. Marty

I also have a blue interior. It's a blessing and a curse. Cool that there are so few of them, but a real bite when you need to find new blue panels. I have not been able to find a drivers door panel in 8 years. I ended up using SEM on a black one. Great stuff that SEM. fortunately most of my interior is in pretty good shape. Here's a couple pix of mine. Marty

What happened to her is a bit of a painful story. I was driving north on Rte 53, just outside of Bolingbrook, IL. I gave it a healthy dose on the go peddle. When I left off the peddle, it kept accellerating all on its own! I hit 65 MPH and its was still accellerating. This was still somewhat of a residential area, so I could not keep going faster. I reached down and shut off the engine. By the time I coasted to the side, there were flames coming out from under the hood. I jumped out and tried to put the fire out. Other drivers stopped to help. I emptied 3 fire extinguishers on it, but it was like peeing on a forest fire. The fire got so intense that it shut down that 2 lane road for an hour. Nobody would pass the car. The fire dept. eventually put out the fire, but it was too late to salvage anything. It ruined everything forward from about the middle of the doors and a lot of the interior. The only thing keeping me from really getting depressed, was that I didn't get hurt. I figured out that the middle Weber carb stuck wide open and spilled gas on the headers. That's why I would never have those on my car again! After that I went 11 years without a Z. As you know, Z Fever cannot be cured. It came back with a vengence, and now I own 2 240 Z's!!! And I am loving every minute of it, !!!

Yep that is an old picture from around 1982. I finally got a scanner so I could upload the pictures. I owned the car from 1980 - 1987. It was a real screamer.

This is what my 1st Z looked like when I bought it. It was the ugliest Z Car ever, lime 112, with gray primer all over. But it only had 38,000 miles on it.

Front 3/4 view of my first Z Car after coming out of the body shop. I put a lot into this car. Triple Weber's, header, Koni's, Panasports, show quality paint and lots and lots of new sheet metal, !

Badges Help
I had a similar issue on my car. I used a very sharp pick with a right angle on it. Removed the inner panel from the hatch and very carefully scratched a tiny hole through the paint and bondo from underneith. Once I had a pilot hole in the correct place, it was easier to enlarge the whole to the correct size from the top. Hope this helps, Marty

Early Shift Boots
I think the part you are describing is the boot that goes over the shift lever where the lever is mounted to the trans at the pivot point. the grommet that we are all looking for it attached to the top of the vinyl shift boot, in the interior of the car. Marty

Half Shaft Year Difference?
Yep, no problem at all. Marty

Great! Thanks for confirming that Chris. I guess we can move full speed ahead on trying to reproduce the grommet type boot. If anyone has a spare grommet or two, let me know, as I will need two of them. Marty

Thanks Arne. Unless someone with knowledge on the very early cars chimes in, I guess we can take that one out of the equation. LBO730, I'll shoot you a PM to get your shipping address. Marty

Early Shift Boots
Hi Chris, Is the grommet type of boot the ones that No. 26 & 27 have? Check my post #22. The one on the far left came out of a 6/70 model, which I thought was original. Have you ever seen that design? I wonder if it might be some type of aftermarket replacement. There is no grommet or place for one at the top. Looks like I will be needing a couple of those grommets.
