Nothing special about the 350z?
When I was talking to my buddy who is looking for a car, him comparing the G35 vs. 350z this is what he had to say. He felt that the 350 was much more froggy which I can see why. G35 = 293/258 350z = 306/268 Plus it weighs some 150lbs less. Though he said that the G35 looks better, feels better, and stuck to the road much better. Him driving it around those corners I was supposed myself at how well the car stuck to the road. Cars with similar power, the one that handles batter is always going to win. Then with the G37 coming out at the end of this year, and nothing heard of the Z, the G37 is going to take the straight away win. IMO the G35 is the new Z, and is worth the extra $6,000. Weight, there are other cars lighter, the same weight or barely over compared to the Z, so weight is nothing special. Some have V8's with much more torque, look meaner, ect. I think that a makeover would have been good enough for the 06/07 model, but if they did it now, I think that it would be a last ditch effort to get more sales. Or even if they kept the same look, and did a 370z.

Nothing special about the 350z?
Yeah, the Solstice/Sky is a sweet little car. I hear that the Sky is a bit faster around the track. Costs some $2k more, and I hear that it has an upgraded suspension over the Solstice. There is a tuner company that has already thrown in a LS2 under the hood. I wish that the N/A had a little more grunt. Give the Miata a little more run for its money. The Miata would be a nice buy in my books, but it has no powerful motor. Only thing that it has a one up on is its weight. With that weight, they need a stronger motor or at least a turbo on the n/a. My friend has a 91' Miata and that was one slow POS car right there. Way over priced for what it was. 170,000 miles for $3k in almost perfect condition.

280z worth $$$
I would finish up your Z car. Use that $1500 to put into your car. If you get that 280z, that is -$1500 for your car, and then all the money that you get is going to be split between two cars. I know that if you have two cars, you are going to want to work on them both, and not just let one sit until you are completely finished with the other one. Though if you have a lot of cash to throw around, then I would do it. I say no, because I barely have cash to throw around. It is more like throwing around a few pennies or something. Whenever I get my money for my Z car, my truck finds out and brakes, so I have to put that money into my truck instead.

Nothing special about the 350z?
This is weird. As each day goes by I dislike the 350z. Their 3.5L is in almost every Nissan car, and the 350z is starting to look like everything else. The Infinite G35/37, Altima, and even the GTR. They are all like the same car, but with different motors pushing different numbers and different drive setups. I want a Z car that is special and different looking. I bet that the 2008 Sentra if there is one is going to look like all the others. Test drove a G35 and it is sweet. Gripped like crazy. Can't wait till the G37 comes out. My buddy is looking for a car and I hope that he either gets the G37, Challenger or SRT8 Charger. I wanted him to get the BMW 335i but he doesn't like it. He is looking at a SLK550 and I hope that he passes on that.

Driving a Z.....
Got one and I am tired of it. Wanting to go to California (what I refer to has home) where my Z car currently is waiting for me. Only going to go out there if my girl goes out there to go to school.

is 50mm mikuni carbs good for me?
I wish that I had had the money for those atm. What if you had a diesel stroke with everything slightly bored, and larger intake/exhaust ports. How would 50mm triple carbs be then? This is what I am ultimately wanting to do with my L24.

NISMO 350Z story and pics
I want to like the 350z but it is so hard too like it. I had rather get the G35/G37. Much much better looking and much luxurious for such a small price difference. Also have AWD as an option. Though I think that they need to get more power cranking through the motor. Not much but they do need much more torque. For the same price and the new competition that is coming out by the end of the year, it is going to kill the 350z/G35/37/anything Nismo. I recommenced it to a buddy who is in the market for a car and I hope that he either gets a G37 which he said he had rather get from all the updates, or a Charger/300C SRT8. Or a Challenger if he waits till then. Shot, just looking around a little bit, it looks like a SRT8 or a GTO could run circles around the Nismo even. I wish that Top Gear would test drive the damn SRT8 around their track dammit.

Daily Driver
All cars are going to have problems, even new cars off the lot can get problems minor or major. I think that $2k is a good price as long as there is no to little rust and no major problems. If it is going to be a project car and a daily driver, make sure that the motor is already the way you want it, or just one afternoons work away from being there. (air filter, fuel filter, battery, hoses, clamps, fluids, ignition, distributer, ect.) If all is in check, I would get it. The 280zx T-Tops 2+2 is actually my preferred choice of a Z car. I have a 240z that I love and will only get ride of for a 2006/2008 Viper, but I would have rather had gotten a 280. Though due to costs, I settled for the awesome deal that I found for my 240z in awesome condition for an awesome price. I basically got a perfectly running, no cancer rust 240z for the price of a parts car.

Your opinions on v8 conversions
I myself was looking at LS/LT/RB/SR motors for my 240z. Though thinking it over for a LONG time, I am just going to stroke it and triple carb it. Keep more of the 240z heritage and the the carb heritage. Right there before carbs were switched to efi. It costs a lot of money, and gains aren't as big as a V8 conversion, but it is much more worth it imo. Basically no one has carbs, or even knows that they are. I know of a few people who think that they are crap and old school equaling no power, but a lot of race cars today have carbs on them. Would be super fun to own people old school style when racing against their twin-turbo DOHC, VVT motors. Plus those swaps are all over the place. I prefer to do something that only a handful of people have done if that. There is a video on Google of a 3.2L L28 stroker with triple webbers and boy does that thing sound mean. Sounds like a monster V8 also. Plus I don't even need that much of a power increase to get 2300lbs to go 0 to 60 in the 5.5 to 6.5 second range which is all that I am looking for. 200hp to 230hp is all that I would need, and a mean sounding stroker triple carb should get me that power. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2382048404444900926&q=datsun+240z I want my 240z to be the same as that but with the L24 block @ 2.7/2.8 liters.

I finally got a Z
Seems a bit like my Z car. Still needs a lot of work, but is ready for the road. My Z needs an all new interior, but all I need is tires, struts, springs and brakes to get her on the road. Going to be ordering parts here soon for her. There is a bit of electrical work that I need to do for mine. That is the part of the job that I hate most, but it must be done. I really like that color btw. Looks real good :-)

Tough choice
If it is N/A it isn't worth it.

AWD conversion
Just asking in general. I know that it would most likely take a hell of a lot of work, a lot of man hours, a lot of money and even a bit of cutting up a Z car to get everything to fit, but is AWD possible in a Z car? Like take an SR or RB motor with an AWD system (for at least the 240-280), would it be possible to get it to work? Are their any AWD Z cars floating around?

Completely off topic, but........
Why would you do such a thing? Could always given it to charity and got a much larger return via your tax returns. If it runs, why destroy it? First year I had my S10 I went 20,000 miles. I really didn't like that much mostly because of gas. Now that my girlfriend is now driving, and I am only going to school part time and not taking any summer classes, I hope to bring this WAY down. Help me save some money!!! Just for that year, I spent some $2,000 on just gas. Doesn't include minor maintenance, and some $170 just for oil changes (oil/filer only.)

Completely off topic, but........
That averages out to 26,300 miles a year!!! How the hell do you manage that? Whats your mileage like now? Its crazy the only thing done is a clutch replacement. My S10 is almost at 210,000. I wish it would die so that I can get something else like a Ramcharger, but I think that it is going to go forever. Everything on it is still original except for the alternator and A/C compressor. I recently had to take it to the shop, and I think that I might have to end up getting a whole new exhaust system depending on what really is wrong the with truck.

L28 turbo
I would just find a L28ET and 5-Speed and do a swap like that. If not, depending on what your current L28 has, you might have to replace everything except for the block to get it turbo'd and handle the pressure and run good. Lots of money right here. If you get a L28ET I wouldn't bother with a supercharger. L28ET isn't intercooled and the turbo only pushes 6psi. Its maximum efficiency is 15psi, so you can still get a bunch of power out of the L28 with a good intercooler. Other then that I would just find some V8 and drop it in.

What do I do with the A/C..is it worth it
This weather that we live in, if you have the money I would sure as hell get it fixed. Driving around with all your windows open going 60+ mph and still drenched in sweat is not cool. Plus if you end up getting stuck in traffic, you might as well shoot yourself.

L24 SAE Horsepower
V8's could have taken the larger hit on emissions because there is a emissions set, and for a V8 to meet that emissions requirement would be much harder for a small I6 to meet the requirement. Also, things like A/C, alternator don't really add all that much stress to the motor. Only if you are bagging your sound system, or using your A/C is when you would see a noticeable decrease in performance. Plus I thought that it was only the L26's that had 165HP. From what I have seen, the L28's initially started out at 135HP due to emissions, but did work its way back up to 145HP and than 180HP in the turbo version. L24 sure is the sweetest. Smaller motor pushing about the same numbers and ways much much lighter (240z). Actually, I think that the L24 is an extremely efficient motor for its time. Today, if you look around a bit, current 2.4L I4 DOHC push no more than 170hp and can be seen as low as 140hp, and get roughly the same fuel economy. When you think about it, it seems like nothing has progressed when you see 36 years worth of technology put into todays 2.4L's, and the numbers look like the same from a 1970 L24. IMO, even with emission standards, that is a shame. With the dozens of sensors found in cars claiming that they are there to improve fuel economy, and power, in my books that just seems like a load of bs and raises the cost of the car like crazy, mostly due to emissions. Yeah I know that a manufacture can get 100hp per liter and make a 240hp 2.4L, but there isn't one and 100hp per liter is hard to come by in a N/A set up and rev like a mad man.

L24 SAE Horsepower
That would be the rwhp rating. I just want the standard SAE motor rated HP and not the HP rating due to drive terrain loss. Though that would also be very interesting to see what a stock 240z would be able to push out. Though usually, AWD systems lose 30~50hp, RWD lose 15~30hp and FWD lose 10~20hp from the manufactures numbers. So like an Evo, Mitsu says that it has 289hp, but by the time that number gets to the wheels it is more like 250hp due to drive terrain loss. Though this isnt true all the time because sometimes the ratings are lower than what they really are due to insurance and what not. Like the SRT4 is rated at 230hp, but the rwhp rating is 235hp to 250hp and for the Cobalt SS, that is rated at 205hp, but stock they dyno 230rwhp.

My car needs premium, I'd rather it didn't.
I believe it is actually a 4/5 points difference. Europe has 98 and 95 RON equaling 93 and 91 here in the states. My 1971 Datsun Haynes manual says that the 240z should run on 98 ron (93 here in the states) and the 260z should run on 94 Ron (being 89/90 here in the states.) Here in TN, we have 87/89/93. I really don't see the need for 89. Usually if you need something higher than 87, you need at least 91. I have never seen an application where 89 was the minimum required to run the car. I have only seen it be 87/91/93. At stations they should do the whole country a favor and replace 89 for E85.

L24 SAE Horsepower
Well, in the 70's the rating was 151/149 for the L24 found in the 240z car. Now with the SAE standards always changing, what would this number be using todays standards?

Toyota Calipers @ Autozone - $76/pair, loaded (+core)
Damn, didn't think that they would be this cheap. Still debating if I should upgrade to the Toyota calipers for my 240z now or just wait a little bit. Not even sure if they will fit with with my rims, though I think that they will.

How to get better fuel economy?
Find a VTEC motor and drop that in there. Its hard to really increase economy noticably. Even with a 5-speed / r200 swap, fuel economy might go up 1 or 2 mpg. Though doing everything you can, fine tunning you car, dropping weight, I think that you might, just might gain 1mpg. Just drive good. That will be your biggest benefit. I can pull 30mpg on the free way in my S10 going 65mpg all the time, but once I start going 70+ I can only get 25mpg tops. Then driving around town, depending on how rough I drive I can get as low as 22mpg and as high as 25mpg if I am a good boy. Though mostly it is around 23 to 24mpg average.

Four Reasons NOT to Restore a Car
#4 can be taken out of there depending on the person. Plus depending on who you deal with, you can make a BUNCH of money off of a restored car. Its a hobby just like anything else. Any hobby costs money, and depending on which car you have, you can have a really cheap hobby. I go to a computer forum, and these guys put more money into their computer per year then how much money I put into my truck per year just for gas. 1.) You never make money off most hobbies. *Don't rebuild that computer, you wont make money off of it!* 2.) Usually happens in every hobby 3.) Have someone else do it in a week for you instead if you don't want to finish you lazy bum. 4.) Its a hobby and it might even be sentimental. If my dad had a kicka$$ Ford truck from the 50's that I grew up with, I would keep it if given to me even if it needed $25,000 worth of work. Hell, I would even restore that puppy, and give it back to my dad. I might be able to get him to cry this way. Sentimental value means much more to me and my family than money.
