Very interesting with these badges. This is new to me. I am wondering when they switched over from the solid chrome Z to the painted white Z on the C pillar emblem. I checked my 4/70 build and it has the white Z. Pretty sure these are original based on the minor chrome pitting and paint fade, and I don't think me or my dad changed them. I do have one emblem with the chrome Z but it is pitted. Guessing these will be a bit hard to find.

I had Vin 1222 1/70 car years ago, and it had the chrome Z on rear quarters and rear hatch….latest one I’m aware of. The super early double digit cars came with the solid back chrome z emblems. “ 2 different chrome z versions….”

The early production changes to the '240Z' emblems are a legacy of the late decision to change the naming of the Export variants. Japanese market 'Fairlady' variants received a round 'Z' script emblem on their quarter panels which didn't change until the universal vented 'Z' quarter emblem was introduced. That design pre-dated the '240Z' emblem...

In retrospect it's hard to understand why the Japanese market round 'Z' emblem could not have been used on all variants - Domestic and Export - until the vented emblem switchover. The '240Z' emblem, to my eye, always looks a little incongruous in that location. Too many angles and sharp edges in conflict with the swooping and flowing lines of the body. Round 'Z' script much more harmonious.

Hi Keith,

Remember that this is about Japanese domestic variants (Fairlady Z, Fairlady Z-L, Fairlady Z432 and Fairlady Z432-R) with vented tailgates and non-vented quarters, not "non-US" variants.

No rear-facing indentation (because it was not a vent...) and they fit flush to the body all round. They are assymetric (to fit the body) and oriented L and R with the letter cast-in, and - like the bonnet/hood 'Z' emblem - have an arrow pointing UP.

An upside-down 'Z' just won't do...!

I have a '70 240 that I restored over a number of years. Not a bad job I think. It's even won a couple of first-place 240/260/280 trophies at the local annual show. But it's not on the same planet as this one. In a concours, this one would win, hands down. On the topic of concours, I was at the Pebble Beach Concours a few years ago, just tagging along with one of the judging crews. Came to a 1927 Mercedes four-door convertible. A large red car, with brass and black being the only other colours visible. A car that even someone with no interest in cars would stop and stare at. Gorgeous. One of the judges looked underneath to convertible top where it was attached to the support struts. "Phillips screws there I see?' he says. The owner looked rather blank at the judge and nodded agreement. "You know those weren't invented until 1931,don't you?" At which point he put a -1 mark on his notebook.

Dare I say that even that judge would have trouble finding flow with this 240Z.

I need a little help from the experts here. I am ready to stencil the part number reference on the mustache bar. I thought I had taken pics of it, but cannot find it. Maybe I accidentally deleted it. Anyway, my guess is that it is 55450 E4101, like my SN O2614. Does this sound correct or is it different? I noticed the S30 car ended in 4102.
