So, I finished my gas tank referb with all new vent lines. I put 20 liters in it and drove to the gas station expecting to put in at least 40 more to fill to the 60 litre capacity, but it clicked off at around 32 liters. Hmm that's about 8 liters or 2 gallons short. Got in the car and the gauge doesn't quite go to full.

So I did a search and found that I can probably get the tank fuller if I fill it slower towards the end. But then I looked at the gas tank and realized that to fill the tank some of the fuel would be sitting in the rubber filler neck. As long as my clamp is tight that shouldn't be a problem, but it seems like a poor design.

Do you guys fill to the brim? Or leave a little space in the tank?

Because the triples on my car are so thirsty, I fill right up the filler neck as much as I can.

No leaks so far.

Mine doesn't show full unless there is gas sitting in the filler neck.  I can tell you at that level there is also gas sitting in the vent lines.  I know because one of mine leaks

I fill that thing until I can see the stuff a few inches below the lid I am about to screw on.  Did that with the 240Z I used to have 30 years ago never had a problem with that technique with either car except when I first got the car I have now in 2008.  Back then it had a vent hose leak at the back of the tank.  That is now fixed.  I did notice when I replaced the rubber fill pipe the old one was hard as a rock, maybe from exposure to gas or just old age?

I just replaced my sending unit.  Filled the tank until there was gas about halfway up the filler pipe, and the gauge reads just over 3/4 full.  I don't see how I could get much more gas in this thing.

It takes over 3 gallons to get mine to move off empty.  I dropped the tank cleaned it and sealed it put in a new sending unit.  Had a 2 gallon can I put in and thought the gauge was broken.  Added 2 more and it went to 1/4 tank.  I fill it completely up too, no problems so far.

I have to tilt my lawnmower after filling up to the top of the neck to let the air bubble on the other side out.

Another silly question.   When you guys fill up, does it ever leak through the cap during cornering?  I keep filling up, and shortly there after I see gas residue down the side of the paint below the gas cap (i'm not spilling either).   I also get a strong gas smell when filling right up, i'm curious is maybe one of my hose became disconnected when i changed out all the evap hoses.

I haven't noticed that on mine, it tightens down really good.  Maybe a new rubber seal inside the cap would fix that?

I've had only one tab on the cap get locked in and had a leak that way.  Otherwise, no leaks from the cap.  There actually two seals in the cap, one for neck and one in the vacuum relief valve.  The vacuum valve would be a small leak though.

 

The fuel gets a pretty good run at the cap though on a corner.  Probably lots of force behind it as it slams up the filler neck.

I'll have to check the seals.  It seems to tighten down nice and smooth but maybe it's missing the seal completely.  The residue is quite noticeable, not just a little leak.

I think I put almost 8 gallons in before mine got to that point.  I shorted the sending unit wires together and the gauge read full.  Maybe the sender I got is out of calibration.  Well, its better than no reading at all.
