Temperature?

Featured Replies

What do you think about this reading on the temperature gauge? Is this too hot? 90 degrees outside. Thermostat housing reads 195 degrees with an infrared thermometer. Original radiator (2 row) that I had power flushed last summer. This gauge reads the same with or without the air conditioning on. Temp from the AC vents inside got as low as 35 degree on the highway with R134.

The temperature did not drop on the highway and the car runs great. Just installed a new 180 thermostat. Advice?post-25129-14150824545262_thumb.jpg

If you are worried about your temperature, measure it with a thermometer. Most likely the gauge is not calibrated.

About 1/3 of a gauge warmer than my car runs, but I've got a 3 row 280zx radiator and now dual electric fans.

When I first bought my 240 that's the same spot it ran at, worried me because my other car ran cooler. I put a new water pump on and a Nissan thermostat, they have bigger openings, and now it stays in the middle. A small change for some small $$ but it was worth it to me.

My 73 used to read this high until a local Z specialist did a 24 hr pressure test. He found a very small leak in the heater valve and replaced it. He also insisted on a Nissan thermostat. Now my car NEVER reads above half way, even on brutal 100 degree days in Virginia.

Hope this helps.

Mine also reads just like that. Years ago it read about where the first leg of the "M" is. There was no change after I installed a Nissan 180 degree thermostat.

How does your fan clutch resist spinning? If the fan spins too easy (motor not running!) you may need to replace that. There only about $20. You've not told us is this something new to your car or has it been reading that temp?

So is 195 degrees at the thermostat housing too high?

If you measured that with a thermometer, yes, that is probably too high. The correct thermostat is Nissan part number 21200-V0105. You can remove the thermostat and test it. It should open at 170 degrees F (or is it 160?). Directions on testing are in the FSM.
