Im getting the Ground Control coilovers on my 280Z tomorrow morning, is that what this 240z has? Looks good :cool:

I've got a question about GC coilovers, how come almost every pic I've seen people are using the platorm type weld on ring instead of the type below where the coilover slides over the ring?

The platform perches are included in the Ground Control kit from what I've seen. It's just another way to install the sleeve

I would imagine the "platform" type rings are required with the high tolerance on the GC sleeves, they can move around a bit.

This is not a problem on the 280Z sleeves as the strut diameter is much larger. They don't have the luxury and are forced to make them as tight as possible but I assume it's easier from a logistics standpoint to stock one variety.

The big flat washer isn't necessary, strictly speaking. I found some tube that was fairly snug and welded it onto my new strut tubes, as I had already welded the GC washer on my old struts. The washer is a doubly weird choice because they actually cut a flat spot in it so that it won't stick out that much further towards the tire. You would think if they just found the right tube size they could buy one tube and cut hundreds of pieces from it. Two pieces of tube would handle both strut sizes... ???

I should mention that I had some issues with my adjusters and Ground Control helped me out some 10 years later. Good customer service there! Jay is the man!

I guess thats why I'm worried about the weld on rings as the sleeve isn't that snug on my 240z struts and the when you slide it on the ring its only sitting on a small ledge inside the sleeve, I'm worried if it moves too much it may fall off that ledge.

It won't.

But I'm wondering what kind of threaded sleeves folks are buying if there's enough clearance that people worry about this. The OD of the 240Z strut tube (cleaned and media blasted) is 2.005". I buy coil over sleeves that are 2.038" in ID. .0165" of lateral movement of the threaded collar is insignificant. For the 280Z the OD of the strut tube is 2.15" and I but threaded sleeves that are 2.17". Again, .01" if lateral movement is not an issue.

What are the IDs of the coil over sleeves that you folks are using?

To reiterate my post back in July, the GC sleeves I was supplied (for 240 struts un-media blasted) were .060" over - not a misprint. I did question Jay, he said that was correct. No disrespect to him but I feel that's unacceptable. Moreover there was a significant amount of difference between sleeves.

I would like to know if the other GC customers have experienced the same.

Based on my past experience with GC 280 sleeves I'd venture to guess they didn't have .01" tolerance like yours, those babies were TIGHT.
