Thanks for the responses. I think I might just go with Hastings rings just to be safe. Seems like its the most cost effective option with reported good reviews.

Looks like they might be owned or managed by some place called MAPerformance. They can't even get the acronym right. https://www.maperformance.com/collections/itm-engine-components "...For the best selection of engine management parts from ITEM..."
  5. Zed Head posted a post in a topic in Engine & Drivetrain
I don't know who ITM used to be but it looks like maybe only the brand name persists. They don't even have an open web site. Many/most of the old performance part names are just brand names now owned by large conglomerates that source manufacturing to the cheapest bidder. https://www.linkedin.com/company/itm-engine-components http://itm.openwebs.com:8080/
  6. How do they perform if installed correctly? Just curious. Is it a quality problem or a following-instructions problem?

What's the name of the store in the background? Is that picture from California? Is that fog or smoke?

Bring a Trailer240ZBrowse and bid online for the chance to own a Datsun 240Z at auction with Bring a Trailer, the home of the best vintage and classic cars online.

I used Hastings on a stock 2.4 but have read a lot about oversized ITM pistons and rings. About half and half good and bad but I do know this guy named Guy that's got about five 240s with Eiji Hosomi at Datsun Spirit built motors. Top-shelf stuff, https://www.datsunspirit.com/engines. He says the best thing to do with ITM rings is trash them and use Total Seal instead. Here's a thread with some opinions... Maybe he'll see this, @Diseazd

FYI, I merged your two posts together into this one.

I was browsing through Church of L Series past posts. Seems to be the same guy preaching it though. I did read somewhere else the "secret" to using ITM pistons is not using their rings and upgrading. Thought I would ask here if anyone wanted to share their experiences with running them on their cars.

Nice cars! Do you know what kind of Datsun Z you are looking for? There are many resources to pick up a good one such as BringaTrailer.com, our for-sale forum, etc.. I've seen prices around $5-10k for a fixer upper up to over $100k for a fully restored original. Resto-mod versions typically $35-60k. All USD.

Most of the time a lot of those bad reviews come from folks that don’t know or have no experience installing piston rings.

Where did you see the bad information?
  18. Zed Head posted a post in a topic in Wanted
Download the service manual and open up the General Information (GI) chapter. It shows where the various numbers and tags are. I've found though, that some sections of the chapter, at least for the 280Z's, seem to describe a plan that never actually was completed.

Looks like you fixed the translation bug. Now you need to work on grammar and punctuation.

  25. SteveJ posted a post in a topic in Wanted
The 17 digit VIN didn't start on the Z line until 1981. As @Patcon mentioned, the VIN does not contain much in the way of a build code. For the 79 & 80, I'm not sure where the paint code was located. It might be a foil sticker on the radiator support, like the S30. It looks like later years of the ZX had the information you want on the plate in the engine bay. This site may be able to provide you with more information: https://www.xenonzcar.com/s130.html It has color codes for the interior and exterior: https://xenonzcar.com/s130/colorchart.html

I do not believe that information is available. The Marti report came about when Ford was going to dispose of all the build sheets from that era. Somebody aquired them and saved them. When you get a marti report they are finding the proper build sheet and providing the info, for a fee. IIRC

Hello has anyone here have experience with running ITM piston rings? About to get into my rebuild and have read some not so great opinions on them. I tried looking for some 0.020" oversized rings and can't seem to find anything but ITM and Hastings.

hello everyone, I am trying to find out how can you decode a vin number. i have a 1980 datsun 280zx first 6 is hgs130 which tells me H- L28E G- 2+2 s130 car model then rest is serial number which has 6 numbers. I have found all that info. Mine was manufactured between 8/79 - 6/80 So, vin is only 12 numbers and no where can I find anything about the vehicle as color code, transmission, etc. My dad works on classic mustangs so he can send in for what's called a Marti report and tells you that your vehicle is x or x with this trim color etc. that's what I am looking for. Can anyone help me out?

Case closed update: I had my seats re-foamed and the ride is great now. I was surprised how big a difference that made, but we're sitting pretty now. Thanks all!
