Needles?
Hey Guys, I'm in the process of swapping blocks (N42>F54). I currently have 71 round tops, N42 head,6-1 exhaust 2 1/2 pipes with a flowmaster, and a K&N filter. I am planning to upgrade to EI and use an MSD coil. My question is about the needles in the carbs. As far as I know they are stock. I've heard that I need to change the needles with the larger engine. Should I order the "Gross Jets" from Motorsports? Or is there another option?

240, 260, or 280
If you are planning to use this car for drag racing you might want to consider using one of the 2x2 (backseat) models. They have a longer wheel base.

How fast does your Zed go???????????
I've modified my 73 just a little. And I've replaced most of the old rubber underneath. I've had mine up to 135 for about 30 seconds (more than once). Felt real smooth. A little scary though.:tapemouth

installing a rear sway bar on a late '73 help
I too have a 73. I installed a sway bar out of a 74. It does have that 2 1/2 bend to go around the diff mount. It installed with no problems.

My wife says...
I always thought that a "Guys" place was in the garage. A place where we can hide from the wife, kids, phone calls and other things. A place where we can put that old greasy part that you'll get to some day to tinker on. A place that we can call our own. A batcave if you must. If you let your significant other take over YOUR batcave then you might as well move out.

Carb Jetting
Is there a way to tell what kind of needle/jets I have in my SU's. I purchased them new from MSA and as far as I know they are probably stock. The block is an L28 and I plan to do some work to it. Should I change to Gross Jets?

carburators
Timberwolf, You mentioned that the Z therapy carbs come with Gross Jets. I got mine about 2 years ago from Scott. I really don't know what jets/needles are in it. Is there a way to check?

Anything I Need to Know
Make sure you have everything ready. Intake manifold, Exhaust(headers), linkages, air filter, hoses etc..I ran into problems because I got lazy and didn't replace the freeze plugs underneath the Intake manifolds. Of course they leaked. My round tops spent about a year in my bedroom before I put them on. I had them polished and made sure all my ducks were in a row. I guess it all depends on whether or not you plan on driving it the next day or if you want to wait for parts. Enjoy!

My '75 280Z
Nice ride! I noticed that you were going to put a P90 Head on the F54. Is the 90 a better head? I have a F54 with the P90 on it right now. I was going to put an N42 head on it. Ed

Gas gauge calibration?
When I fill up, my gas gauge barely reaches the "F" and after about 2 miles it reads 3/4. I've also taken it below the "E". When I fill up the most I could ever put in is about 13 gallons (capacity is supposed to be 16 gallons). My question is; How do I calibrate my gauge to be more accurate?

15" VS 16" rims on the 240
I believe the correct offset for the Z is 4".

Gear oil from speedo?
I was wondering why my drivers side floor mat had some stains on it. I started poking around under the dash and noticed that gear oil was coming off the fitting where the speedometer cable attaches to the speedometer. My guess is that it's coming all the way from the transmission up the cable. Anybody else have this happen to them?

Tire Survey
It all starts with what size wheel and what kind of driving you do. I have the 14" mag wheels. I'm running Yokohama 195/60/14 in front and 205/60/14 in the rear.

Front End Shakes
Yea, Like they said. But I would start with the rotors . Good luck.

K'N air filter #
I dropped a K&N that I ordered from MSA into my airbox which is from a 71 and it fit perfect.

installing a rear swaybar on a '73
Gary, I too have a 73'. The rear end felt like it would "roll" when I did a lot of cornering. Kind of like getting on your hands and knees and moving your butt from side to side. Anyway, I installed a rear sway bar from a 74' and used urathane bushings from MSA. Now it feels tight. No more rolling. I can't really say that I sacrificed any ride quality. To me it improved the ride. I did have a problem with the exhaust that was in the way, had to modify that a little. Good luck.

Electrical question
I put in a new battery and a new V.R. It still does the dimming thing below 1000 rpm.

Amp Gauge is Bouncing
Well, it took me a while to get it all together but I believe it's all working fine now. I put in a new VR from MSA. And a new OPTIMA SpiralCell battery. The amp gauge actually looks like it's working. It stays in the center when at idle. With the lights on and all accesories the guage moves slowly to the positive side. It doesnt't seem that the lights go dim when I'm at idle. The real test will be tomorrow night when I go to work. I'll let you know.

Head Swapping
No turbo. I took the 5 speed out of an 81 280zx and put that in my 73, I guess I should have taken the engine while I was at it. Oh well, it will give me something to do next week.

Head Swapping
I have a 73Z with the N42 block. I do have an F54 available. I guess that's what I'll use. I also heard that the 260z intake allows better air flow good enough for some extra HP? Thanks for all the good info. Jim, I leave the house at 10p. And I drive away from the city.

Head Swapping
The exhaust ports are square. I intend to keep the car as close to "Daily Driver" as possible. My advantage is that I have a 24 mile commute (one way). Seven of which are on a lonely country road with lots of curves. The rest is all freeway. My freeway has about 10-15 cars in 17 miles. And I've only seen 2 cops in the last 6 years. So there have been many an opportunity to let her go. I do want to increase horsepower without loosing the ability to drive into town and have to deal with 100 degree stop and go traffic. In other words I need to beat that Acura Integra! I already have the N42 head on it now but I can tell that the valve seals are gone. I'm really checking out my options for some more horsepower. Oh yea, did I forget to mention that new cam is going to go in at the same time (not sure which one though?).

Head Swapping
I'm in the planning stages of rebuilding my L-28. I already have 71 round tops with a K&N. 6-1 headers with a 2 1/2 exhaust. I want to do some head work and I'm planning on putting in a mild cam and having some port work done. I currently have a N42 head that needs work. I was considering a E-31 head for the higher compression but heard it has smaller valves than the N-42. Any suggestions?
