Yeah but they had 3.36 gears and automatic transmissions.

Problem 72 240Z
Couldn't you flush out that metal line with some kind of solvent and air pressure since you now have things disassembled?

early zcar tv specials
Didn't they end up in the 16s or 17s? To think, that I could take my stock 810 or my wife's J30 and probably beat either one of those cars! My Z would run away and hide from them.

hard cold start/valve lash adjustment
I like that! I've always believed that but I've never heard it put that way. :classic:

early zcar tv specials
We have discussed the 'World Timeline' Z show. That's the one with the Mr. K interviews. We've also discussed the 'Fine Living' Z show. Both were more enjoyable than the Full Throttle one.

hard cold start/valve lash adjustment
d***, you are in my neck of the woods. The weather has gotten colder in the mornings recently. My Z and my 810 are both fuel injected so I don't have a problem starting them in this colder weather. But the carbed cars are a different story. You probably didn't notice the problem as much when the mornings were a little warmer. Carbureated cars I have owned, especially the Z's, are just cold blooded. And without the water going through the intake, they're even worse. You'll probably have to experiment with starting techniques until you find what works best. Carl's valve adjustment description and settings are what I have always used on L series engines.

interpretation
Wasn't he the one who said "If your're going to drink, don't drive?" And the 'herb' comment was a reference to the 'pipe dream' comment-no?

No power
And I also stand on mine. I don't personally have a car with flat tops but I have a freind who has two. He also owns and operates a Z Car repair shop and has for over 20 years. His cars run fine with them, he knows how to work on them and scoffs at the idea that you need to toss them the minute your car sputters and misses. I've driven both of his cars and they both seem to back up his opinion. That's good enough for me. We talked about this in another thread a while back. There were others who agree with me and those who don't. That's fine. I'm not knocking your opinion. But I am entitled to my opinion as are you and anyone else.

Ebay Description
Well, no bids in the first round. Relisted for 5 more days still no bids. Bill, I really wasn't commenting on your situation. I was commenting on the eBay seller. You said 23 cars in storage and I guess I inadvertantly combined his scenario with yours. I just hope you come out of this with a nice, running, non-crashed Z when all is said and done.

No power
Do the other things, cap, rotor, points, etc. first. There are a few of us that don't believe that 'lose the flat tops' theory the minute you have problems. Many times the problems aren't even carb related. I sometimes wonder if Z Therapy themselves began this train of thought. An answer to seerex's question would be helpful here.

Is the 240z right for me?
Very well said! A Z is a commitment. It's a sometimes frustrating, knowlege gaining experience. I didn't have one in my teenage years. They weren't available yet at that point(!).

Cable released hatch?
Or even the cable and lever from a 77-80 Datsun 810

Air Intake Bore out question
I'm sure a machine shop could do that. They would taper the opening on the manifold to the size of the throttle body that is if there is enough material there to do that.

Aircraft Edition 280ZX
Come on guys! You know, the Aircraft Edition. The one with three six spoke wheels and one iron cross wheel.

Well it was nice while it lasted.
Bill, wasn't it your intent to put the motor from the 72 into the 71? Now, it would seem, you have a good reason to do that. I'm glad to hear that you came out of this mishap okay.

Early Z Front End on a 280ZX
My last comment on this: ZX parts are also readily available, junkyards are full of them, and they bolt on.

Early Z Front End on a 280ZX
I'm with you on that one, Carl. If you want the look of a Z front end buy a Z. If the ZX fell in your lap drive it like it is rather than spending money to do something that might not be do-able in which case you'd be wasting money that you'd never be able to recoup. The body lines are different. A Z is a Z and a ZX is .... well whatever it is. It's like my 810, if it hadn't basically fallen into my lap, I probably wouldn't have it. But I'm not going to put a Skyline front end on it.

What sensor is this?
Okay, I did locate it in the wiring diagram as the 'B.C.C.D. Cut Solenoid.' The w/b wire t's into the check connector and runs to connector 1 (C-1) and continues from that connector to the one on the back of the speedometer. How it really works, I don't know. But it seems that it cuts out the BCCD as long as you're maintaing a steady speed or accelerating but lets it work if you are decelerating. Hope that helps you.

Has anyone ever seen this? a DATSUN "car-shield" ?!
You can get those that say most anything on them. Car names, cities, countries, sports teams, sports sanctioning bodies, etc. I'd hang on to it just because it says Datsun and not much is being produced with that great name on it these days.

Early Z Front End on a 280ZX
Pimp my ride, Chop, Cut, Rebuild? Why would you want to do this?

SU carb literature/auto literature
Des Hammill (two ms) is quite knowlegeable about many aspects of the automotive field. I once had a book of his on Weber and Del Orto carbs. I suspect that if you search you can find that book for much less. He has published many a book on tuning, racing, etc.

How do I test a voltage regulator?
Does the EFI Bible use the same relay test as the FSM? That is removing the fuel pump control relay and the fuel pump relay and testing them for continuity? The ECU sends the pulse to the injectors based on the various sensors, switches, and ignition coil.

California OVS Program--help save a 280Z...
I do recall, back in the 80s, they had a program here in California that paid higher prices. I believe that it was up to $750 back then.

280Z US only?
Many of our Aussie friends on this site have indicated the the 280Z was never sold over there. From what I understand they had the 260Z through 78 and then they got the 280ZX. I don't believe that anyone, at least not I, is 'hung up' on the 280Z or any other badge. Too much has been made of that already. For whatever reason, Datsun decided to send certain vehicles to certain markets and that's just they way it is. For a car that was 'built for America' they sure sold a lot of them in other places! Please understand that I say 'built for America' tongue in cheek. I'm not trying to start anything. I'm just glad that they were built. Period.

How do I test a voltage regulator?
Your 77 was the last of the externally regulated cars. My 78 has an internal regulator. I could scan a portion, or even the whole page, of the 77 wiring diagram that shows the v.r. if that would be of any help
