  1. He probably used the 2.6 block to accommodate the larger valves that are most likely installed in the E88 cylinder head. I had to "notch" my 2.4 with a die grinder. The bigger valves will hit the sides of the smaller bore. Here's some pictures,
  2. I found the Excel spreadsheet Walter Moore made. I have the D6K8-05 10 degrees at idle 17 weights 20 vacuum 47 total @2,500 rpms Thank you @Walter Moore D6K8-05 10 17 20 47 2500 27 M 1979
  3. I'm going to try and set my total timing today after finally getting the fuel levels right. Does this sound right? 1. idle at 750 rpms 2. plug vacuum hose 3. set to 17 degrees 4. set light offset to 34 degrees 5. run it up to 3,000 rpms 6. adjust distributor until "0" pulley mark hits on light strobes Thanks for any advice and my ZX distributor has 8.5 stamped on the weights. EDIT, I have know idea what pinging sounds like so I'm using my high dollar light.
  4. Look for a solid black wire on the negative side of the coil. It runs from the distributor to the coil or vice versa? that's the tach signal. I believe you have a blown fuse though. Here's some helpful stuff for your car. Look under ELECTRICAL then cleaning connections, http://atlanticz.ca/index.php/tech-tips.html I think most vacuum leaks are a tear in the rubber accordian hose between the AFM and throttle body. Some silicone will seal them up.
  5. When I had the problem it was back charging through the IGN circuit, blew that fuse and killed all my gauges. No tach or temp, volt gauge, nothing. The original one at top, the newly remanufactured one on bottom.
  6. I have a 12,500 BTU I'm hoping to put in the back window this weekend. With a pedestal fan in front helping move the air it should work okay if I turn it on early enough and keep the doors down.
  7. I can show pics in the morning. I'm using my phone now, sorry.
  8. Check your IGN fuse. I blew mine fooling with the alt.
  9. That's pretty neat. I'd like to understand how that works better. I've used clear tubing to those bowl screws and the 23mm mark from the lid to get close. My next step is turning the knobs down 10 rounds and looking for fuel in cuspid of the nozzles. Please elaborate on your device. 8^) I'd be interested.
  10. From what I remember you should have a T shaped plug in for the F & N, a wire o the E or ground and a screw down terminal on the BAT. If those are connected it should pull or magnet like pull a screwdriver to the center of the backside.
  11. I've got some of those left over and the part number. I had to buy a pack of 10 or 12. They're really small diameter, I'd guess eighth inch. I can measure them for you to be sure but those you're looking at are too big. I'll get the the info in the morning. Away from home presently, sorry. Jwtaylor is correct, normally they come with the new badges.
  12. Getting my two cars ready to sale I've been driving the 240 just to see how it does. Yesterday I heard something bumping around in the rear. I thought it was the suspension but as it turns out luckily it's only a loose muffler hanger. Adjusted the clutch pedal rod to fsm specs and now I have a good clutch. Filled up the tank and drove around close to home for an hour without any problems. Advancing the timing from 5 BTDC to 10 lowered the temp gauge and overall runs much better. I do think I lost some top end rpms as Zed Head mentioned but I'll take the trade off. 8^) 280 is next but it'll be tomorrow morning due to the heat. I try and get started at daylight when it's in the 60s. By 10am its 80 degrees down here. Four hours of decent weather to work on them is enough for me anyway.
  13. I don't care what people think of my replies. Most folks know I live for the fun of it. 8^) No regrets.
  14. I like the vacuum gauge on there. Going to get one for mine.
  15. Here's a pretty neat 280. SAP package but no Zap stickers. It's kind of priced high on ebay but if it doesn't sale you could get the owner's info off the tag and call them direct. You have any police friends? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-SAP-Package/272289890846?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150313114020%26meid%3D80ac838784bb402788357badd44c9749%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D15%26rkt%3D23%26sd%3D122030280863
  16. Zed Head those full face vaporizers you like are the reason. I jimmy rigged a scuba mask.
  17. In my opinion, if it looks as good as it's presented on eBay, $20K is a fair price for both of you. It's what you wanted, take care and hold onto it.
  18. That's a good idea. 8^) Just so happens that I am chasing a #112 yellow '72. Husband wants to keep it, wife wants it gone. So far he's still the boss.
  19. It looks like they pulled it out from under that shed and rinsed it off for the pictures. The battery isn't hooked up and the rear is sun damaged. The wheels look darker on one half than they do the other, from sitting. I've never seen so much rust in an engine bay. Sorry to pile on but I can't help myself. You're looking at it as an investment, I see a money pit.
  20. Are you joking? I was afraid of the su at first, the only thing I have with carbs is my lawnmower, but after rebuilding a set I'm more comfortable with them. The 240s are much quicker and more fun to drive. Nothing like the screaming sound of carburetors. When I get bored I may put some Weber 40s on one. I just so happen to have a set. 8^) When the carbs are right they're rock solid. Less is best for me. I like the heavier ride of the 280s on the interstate but not as much as my Camry. I like back roads early in the mornings. There's tons of 280s around, not too many 240s though. They've all been crashed. The efi 280 would be great for a first timer. I just need more room in my garage and the 240 is shorter, I can park my mower behind it and the door barely clears it. I'd rather drink beer and work on them than drive one.
  21. I just had the biggest "duh" moment of my life. I've got 3 Zs in my garage, two 240s and a 280. I need to keep my daily driver in the cooler garage than sitting outside roasting in the sun. When I met my Dad on Father's Day I was pouring sweat ( he was just a couple of miles away) from my Camry being so hot, long pants and a long sleeve dress shirt with a tie on. So I've decided to sale the 280 instead of the 240, DUH!!!! Doesn't that make more sense? 240 prices are going crazy now so I should keep it instead of the 280 in my opinion, agree?
  22. Good article to read from Janurary 2009, http://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hsx/2009/01/In-the-Black---1978-Datsun-280Z/1749113.html What to pay 1978 Datsun 280ZLow: $3,500Average: $6,500High: $10,000
  23. $4 at Lowes. No need for a caulking gun either.
  24. Looks like that was his first and last post? I'll try a @jellroy2
  25. Now that's attention to details. 8^) You're absolutely right on the engine bay repaint. I did not notice the brake lines were yellow. Good catch! Looks like a well done job except the things you've pointed out.
