The same style VIN. They just stopped putting the engine serial number on the tag. Don't know why. I had a 76 and a 78, so have seen both.

Nissan stopped putting the engine number on the tag in 77 or 78. It's not on a 78 for sure though.

Sounds like on the the plastic rollers has broken. Fairly common. There are some solutions on the site, can't remember where.

The BaT listing says that a dealer is selling it. Might look for classic car dealers. "The selling dealer acquired the project a year ago and completed it with new suspension components, brakes, tires, interior trim, seals, spark plugs, and more as outlined below."

For sale - 1972 Datsun 240z -$23,900 or best offer
I guess it boils down to why you're picking a venue for selling a car. To take home maximum money or to be a part of a good show.

Could have been an attempt to fix the leaky head gasket. Did you crack a bolt loose? How do you know they were overtorqued? Things don't fit - 30,000 original miles is barely broken in. No reason for an HG to go. Unless there was detonation, maybe from low octane fuel. As I understand things though, that usually blows 5 or 6. Check for signs of the head being off in the past. Something's odd here.

So it's not out yet? One way to make sure you use minimum heat is to put force on it while you do the heating. It will let go when you just hit the right amount of heat.

Seems that people are bashing the BAT site because they don't like some comments that they saw. Doesn't make sense. If the seller gets his asking price, with low fees, who gives a ____ about the comments?

All it takes is one overheating and a head gasket can blow. Maybe the first guy wasn't such an "A-hole" after all. Did the engine ever overheat before the car "broke"? Never really said what the original problem was.

You're implying that the head gasket is blown between 3 and 4. That would explain Dave's observation. The GOOD! news is that the cylinders, pistons, and rings seem to be in good shape. Looks like head removal is in order. FUN!

That's a bummer. The rest of the motor is so shiny and new. Is that in 5 or 6?

Lash gets tighter when the engine warms up. Might be that the PO ran it hard because it was running poorly and "burnt" some valves. That just means warped from uneven heating cause they weren't seating all the way. Not good! Looks like lash gets about .002" tighter after warmup. So, you'd have valves hanging open by your numbers. Might be too late.

I meant the balls in the races. The play between the inner race and the outer race. You'll be using the outer race for location but the inner race to support the cutter head. Any play in the bearing itself will affect cutter head location. Might be better off to cut a plug that fits the 56 mm bore then cut a hole in it. Convert the Nissan ball bearing to a bushing. Get rid of the balls. Not sure but I think that somebody might have inferred that already... Or...I just didn't comprehend what's going on.

Doesn't the Nissan bearing have some play, that will affect the cutter's precision? I used that concept to hog out the clearance on the front case for a 71C swap, using a grinding disc, some all thread, and a hand drill.

That ad is confusing. Is the car for sale for $15,000 now? Not $18,900?

Does the shifter that didn't work have a mark/notch on the back where it was impacting the case? I had a 76 4 speed shifter that worked on a 76, 78, 81, and 83 transmission. Just trying to understand, doesn't make sense. siteunseen took a grinder to his shifter and made it work better. @siteunseen

Not so sure. The base circle has wear marks, indicating that it had some force on it. The base circle is usually dirty since it only has the force of the mouse trap spring on it when lash is correct. I don't see a feeler gauge.
