72 steering rack rebuild
I am restoring a 72 240 and I want to rebuild the steering rack.. Boots are torn, grease and gunk all over it, play, etc. I noticed I can get a rebuilt rack from a big box store for about $550. Seal kit plus tie rods looks to be around 450 to 500 and I would have to rebuild it. Wondering if anyone has had any experience with a Cardone rebuilt rack? I would check it to make sure it is the same ratio. Thanks.

Steering column connections and lighting: FIXED
Have you checked all the grounds? Among others, I am pretty sure there is a ground under the car in the area of the right tail light. I have found loose grounds will make for some weird electrical issues.

Steering column connections and lighting: FIXED
Not sure this will help, as I may be in your situation later on! I thought I took pictures of my steering column but I couldnt find them. I did put them together on the bench. There is a black wire that connects the headlight switch to the blinker switch. I cant tell if you have that one connected.

I thought I was done with Z cars
Current condition picture. New roof is welded in and I have been leading in the corners. I am removing the dash and going to send it off to Just Dashes for repair. I am going to remove all the suspension and sandblast the tub. I am debating on getting a rotisserie or a chasis dolly. I just cant decide how I want to treat the underside of the car. It is in nice condition and could probably be pressure washed and undercoated. I will make that decision later when the car is completely stripped. A little work here a little work there. Kind of jumping around scratching my chin.

Wiring harness: Need a visual
Looking good, I cant wait to get to assembly. For painted fasteners, I go back with a disposable micro brush (amazon) and dot the bolts with some paint. I just finished restoring a 1930 model A pick up and almost every screw was painted body color and scratched during assembly. Not to mention that every screw was a flathead! It was like assembling Christmas toys over and over.

The car cleaned up nice! Be careful, the x may want it back now 🙂 I think my vin is 7400's or so. I was thinking of going back Brown with black interior, except from what I can find, that wasn't ever offered. I want to keep it as a stock color combo. Leaning towards silver or white.

I picked up a roof down in Ga at Resurrected classics. Very nice guys there. I ended up picking up several other things that I needed. They make some nice products. It was great seeing the younger generation passionate about old z's. Happy to support them. Cutting the roof skins off wasnt quite as easy as I had read it was. Each corner was welded and soldered in place. It took me a while to figure out the best approach. I got some spot weld drill bits and a seam buster. Pretty pleased with it so far and it looks like it will go back together ok. This is going to be a long project! I dropped of the motor at the machine shop today. Some pictures of the new roof test fit:

Palco/Dashpot panels
Doesnt seem like many choices and nothing is in stock anywhere. Went with MSA as they had the best price with shipping. I am not in a hurry as I have plenty of work to do until I get to the "put it back together" STAGE.

That is pretty cool that you know the car. It was originally brown with tan interior. I was going to put it back to the original color, but I after knowing I need just about every interior panel, vinyl and headliner I have decided to go back with a stock exterior color and black interior. Thinking white or silver. I am typically a completely original type, but sourcing every piece of tan interior is tough and brown just doesnt get me excited. Everything else will be as close as possible to OEM. I actually have a complete original 74 exhaust that is in very good condition. I may see if that will fit. I have had these hubcaps in storage for over 30 years! They were removed by a dealer and never used. Mint.

I thought I was done with Z cars
It was from Anderson! A college friend at Lander was from Anderson and owned the car. He had it a couple of years and bought another car. Parked the Z at his parents shed in 1986.....and it never moved again. He lives in Ca now and needed the car gone. He remembered that I had a z and contacted me. Not sure if that is lucky or unlucky.....like offering crack to an addict. Here is what it looked like when I drug it out a few weeks ago. Look familiar??

Yes, I think I was conversing with Clay. A little hard to get them on the phone. Are they legit?

I thought I was done with Z cars
Looks like there are a few of us in the upstate! Thanks for the link, I didnt get a notification. I think I found a donor roof down in Ga, hopefully heading there Friday to get it. Here is where I am now, except I tore down the motor and getting it ready for the machine shop. Lots of sins were committed on this car from a previous owner. I really should document them and make another thread. Carpet stapled to the interior panels, missing one flywheel bolt, lots of SAE fasteners, etc. Luckily they werent hack electricians!

Palco/Dashpot panels
Searching for some replacement black plastic panels. Was looking at the Palco product. Crazy expensive with shipping, so I was wondering what others thought of the product? Dont mind spending the money if they are really good quality. Thanks!

Started getting some orders together for interior. Prices have gone up a good bit since my last restoration but shipping costs are absolutely insane. Advice to anyone considering a restoration: Double your cost of parts to cover shipping 🙂

15 Years
22 years for me, but not as active as most people. Z cars have been a part of my life since 1973. In my teens I had a 240, my brother had a 260 and Dad had a 280. I had 3 orange z's for a while and sold my last one around 2014 and never thought I would get another one. A couple of weeks ago a picked up a restoration project.......the addiction is hard to get over!

Bought 4 hubcaps
Those are really nice and for a really nice price compared to what I have seen them selling for on Ebay. I have a set that were removed at the dealer and have never used. I have had them for over 30 years. Just made a deal on a 72 that needs restoration. Finally have a car to put my hubcaps on 🙂
