  1. It's the car's heartbeat. Naw, just joking. You're probably correct about the alternator or VR. I'd check 'em both out.
  2. Ditto what Manny said. And be careful removing the bolts as they can and do seize in the block.
  3. Firing order might help. Here's a little ditty that may help you remember.... A 15 year old girl is too young. A 36 year old girl is too old. A 24 year old girl is just right. 1-5-3-6-2-4. Number one on the distributor is closest to the radiator.
  4. Robert will be a boost. His organizational skills and enthusiasm lend needed attributes to our club. If you are in the Greater Houston area, please, come see us. Third Tuesday of each month. www.zclubofhouston.com
  5. Boss lookin' Z, Mike. Were you at the Z meeting last night?
  6. Re #10. Do you not think it may be because they don't want to take the chance of damaging your wheels during install?
  7. It's located on your thermostat housing which is under the engine end of the upper radiator hose.
  8. I am planning for ZCON 2010. I'd like to get a personal look if you're going to be there.
  9. Tell me more...
  10. Sucking ain't the same as pushing. If you wire your horn up backwards, does it suck or blow? Sucking doesn't tell you that the pump is working.
  11. Yes, you can start the engine with the valve cover off, but be prepared to do a clean-up job. Have you taken the line loose from the fuel pump to the carbs while cranking to see if you're getting fuel flow?
  12. Forty years is a long life for the plastic fittings that fit around the balls on carb linkages and such. Mine are still in "decent" shape, but being made by the hand of man, are subject to failure at any time. Does anyone have a source for these little white plastic heim-joint type thingy-bobs?
  13. Ditto what Carl said. 4 grand is loafing to an L engine.
  14. I would be VERY interested to know the process by which he restores lost dimension to the drums. Over-boring and inserting a steel sleeve can create bi-metal corrosion issues down the road, as well as reducing drum strength. If he uses plasma spray, well, that's a whole 'nuther ball game.
  15. Don't overlook the search function. Virtually ANY question you would have has already been answered by someone, and the questions / answers are in the archives. That's not to imply that should you have a question it will not be answered. How 'bout some pics of your '72??
  16. The last line, Dave, the last line.
  17. That is as it should be.
  18. As we all know, autocrossing is an absolute blast. Here comes some nostalgia.... Back in "the day," I autocrossed the Z. Did pretty well, too. Well enough to qualify for the SCCA Solo II run-offs two years running. Anyway, in '72 the Division Run-offs were held at Penwell Raceway, just west of Odessa, Texas. I hailed from Lubbock, about 150 miles down the road, up until about two months before the scheduled event. Had moved to Montgomery, Alabama. Now, that's a 'fer' piece to drive for an autocross, but I did. I had scarfed a set of used race tires from a buddy that raced a Datsun 2 liter and shipped them to my father-in-law in Odessa. Wifey and I made the trip, swapped the tires onto my wheels (which are still on the car in in the avatar) and set out to conquer the field. I almost did. Except for a dadgum Ferrari that had driven up from Houston. He beat me by less than a second to claim the A-Prepared trophy and to advance on to the nationals. That final run was one of two times in the car's life-to-date I saw the tach needle vibrate against 8 grand. In that run, I also tossed the fan belt and finished with 275 showing on the SW mechanical temp gauge I'd installed. Sometimes, the desire to WIN is too strong, given the inherent fragility in things mechanical. Plus, I had to drive back to Alabama after the fun. All ended well, except I got to go home. Anyway, the Z is a superb autocross platform so you will have loads of fun and thrills, hopefully no spills or chills. Enjoy.
  19. No, there shouldn't be air bubbles. There can be air in the filter, though. Bubbles are generally caused by cavitation in the pump. I agree with your replacement of the pump if you find it low on pressure, volume delivery or if it draws excessive amperage. I have a Stewart Warner clicker pump I installed over 35 years ago, and it's still pumpin' gas.
  20. Great! Glad to have you here. Whereabouts in Texas are you?
  21. Personally, I think the Z32 is the best looking Z ever built. And the exhaust note is V8-ish. Nice score!
  22. Don't forget to replace the water pump....!
  23. I see a parts car, not one to sink any $$ into. Good advice from others, save up and spend more, it'll cost you way less in the long run.
  24. My 1970 FSM lists total vehicle weight @ 2300 lbs. There is no specification in that publication for weight by axle. You might be able to get your department of motor vehicles to weigh each corner or each end of the car to arrive at the number you seek. Good luck!
