  1. Actually it's 3 bolts and a stud & nut. Unfortunately, one bolt is blocked by the steering rack, so I need to do something else. I might drive it to a service place and get some help.
  2. You give them the core when you pick up the new one. If I could get the bracket off, I'd take that to show them. It was a 1/4 inch to big. One ear had something like a bush in the bolt hole that stuck out about 1/4, right? thx
  3. Since I only have an elbow ( about 7 in radius) do you think a muffler shop could shrink the end a little? It would only need to be about 1/8 in on the radius. How far in does the shrinking have to tool go in? You only need about an inch to get the tube on. thx
  4. were there different brackets for the alternator for different years? I got a rebuilt unit that doesn't fit. The bracket is too wide. Got the unit from NAPA, because I didn't want to wait for shipping to & from VB/BD. thx
  5. Is it normal for oil to drip or weep from the oil pressure sender hole? The threads seem fine enough to keep the oil in, but mine has some that made it to the driveway. :devious: Can you use some kind of goop to seal the threads, or teflon tape, or what? I was also thinking of changing out the oil filter gasket too... thx
  6. I have a cone filter with a 3 inch aluminum tube off eBay. How can you stretch the rubber air tube over the metal tube. Hot water? thx
  7. the 8mm rubber hose is 'exactly' 5/16 inches. Ehen I find some that's polished or shiney like hrome, I'll put that on instead.
  8. I know a couple guys that wil take the top off the air box for autocrossing, claiming it should let the air in easier.
  9. Ah, but you didn't have to worry about the car not being gassed-up!

Now if I could only figure out what the 'contactor' part is supposed to do... The FSM says it's supposed to counteract the tendency of the magnetic field to advance even more at higher RPMs...

You'd have to get it kinda hot to affect the magnetism (if it is magnetic) so a little warming won't hurt it.
  12. I would start counting with the car just the way it is, and if you want to, remove seats or anything else and try again.

Thanks a lot. Too much gunk in there to see what's happening.

So there's something like a cam or lever in the shaft to advance the top section of the rotor shaft, and the vacuum advance advances it some more? My weights are 9 degrees, btw.

The dizzy on my 280Z has the centrifugal weights inside, but I don't see how they connect to the breaker plate to affect the spark advance? Any explanation on that before I reassemble? ( got my breaker plate- it's the "last one left in the U.S.") thx
  16. Oh come on! you can fit 9 stiff bodies in the back EASY with the hatch open!
  17. I wasn't expecting that one! I thought the first reply would be "An S30 seats 2." :surprised It probably wouldn't make a difference on how many 'bodies' you can fit, but I think there would be significantly less (as in none others) if there was a dead one in there somewhere.
  18. OK, S30 2-seater. No convertible top, etc. Maybe try it both ways.
  19. Remember stuffing 15 people into a VW beetle? How many can you stuff into a Z? OK, which Z? I think I would go with an S30. Should the hatch be up or down? thx
  20. Is it normal for a remanufactured alternator to not fit the oem bracket? The bracket on my L28 engine is about 1/8 - 1/4 inch too big to fit between the ears on the alternator. Reman ufactured alternator is from NAPA. thx
  21. Do you think there might be a vapor tank replacement made of HDPE that will last? Maybe not the exact Ysame size & shape. your oem plastic tank must be reaady to disintegrate if it's like the rest of the plastic on that car.
  22. If you removed the letters "ISSAN" from the top (later models, I think), it would just say "Z"
  23. Just wondering... If you wanted to fabricste some bumpers, say to go under a body kit/front clip, what would you need ofr the bumper part? special steel? carbon fibre?
  24. The vapor tank and vapr canister work together. The vapor tank condenses the majority of gas vapor right off the fuel tank, and the vapor canistor gets what little is left, so you don't have the fumes. Search for other threads on this topic to see what people have done.
  25. My 280Z (11/78) center console has a rectangular hole at the back. Is there supposed to be an ashtray there too? There already is one just ahead of the armrest, between it and the shifter? I don't mind having another ashtray; it's a good place to stash coins. But would it be correct? thx
