My opinion is you will like what K&N will do for your car. The car sounds better and will get better air (cleaner and less restricted). I also am of the opinion it gives a teensy bit more power. However: I stronly feel the only real way to get noticeable power improvements from this sort of bolt-on is to combine it with a free-flowing exhaust. Easy in, Easy out. Try this: Take the air cleaner off your Toyota Corrola or Volvo 740 or Geo Metro or whatever and go drive it. steve77

I took mine to the local Midas. After explaining several times to several different individuals what I wanted AND CLEARLY STATING I DID NOT INTEND THEM TO DO IT FOR FREE, I was given the "We can't be liable" speech. Can't be responsible for damaging your arms, for damaging your new bushings, what if we get them out and the urethane ones in your hand don't fit? What if the assembly fails? And on and on. Lawyers have ruined the country. I gave up and went home and did them myself. Now, in hindsight, it was probably a BIG mistake going to MIDAS. They are a pretty big franchise 'chain' store here--even though they advertize, "For all your suspension needs--including lowering and lifting". A smaller suspension shop would have most likely not had the 'corporate' mentality. steve77

I can't comment on a f54/n42...That sounds like something that was put together...and who knows how it was put together? Flattops? I have a bone-stock innards in my L28 which in 77 (in the US) came with n47/n47. I have a K&N intake and headers with straight-out exhaust and I rev it easily and frequently to 5500 and occasionally to 62 or so. I tell you about the intake and exhaust because it did not rev to these levels easily before. I have never owned a L24, but I have heard many people say it can rev higher. Of course, it all depends on how it was built and how it is running....Balanced? Polished? Knife-edged? ARP? etc. etc. etc......A decently put together L should be safe to 7 and a very well built L-series could visit 8? steve77

Hey, you want to make this conversation really interesting? Ask about headers and low-restriction exhaust, and if it produces more 'power'. Leave your question really vague. Just say, "power". Hey guys...As a card-carrying member of the RSPBRC (Rear Spindle Pin Bushing Replacement Club), I can agree this is not fun. I just met a guy the other day who has several hundred of a tool he made in the 70's to remove these. He says he could sell them for maybe $30??? I have not tried them yet, but is anybody interested? Thin bumpers are on 240's and a version of them (almost identical) are on 260's. And the overriders come and go with individual whim....Bumpers are not an ideal way to tell 240's apart.... Fat, crash bumpers appeared on the280 when it first came out for the '75 model. Look at the 'wrap-around'--the black fat rubber side pieces that connect the bumper to the body. '75 and '76 are smooth with a single groove running their length. '77 and '78 have 'accordian' bellows. CAVEAT: I am speaking of USA vehicles only! steve(psych!--NO BUMPERS!)77

Whoa! That is wild! It is in a Jetta model and will be in the new (to the USA) Phaelon or something. They are also making a W12. Two rows of cylinders in each bank separated by 15 degrees. Counter-rotating balance shafts??? All I can say is, LOTS OF PARTS TO FAIL! steve77

YEah, that's prety much it...somebody has my JCR cattledog right now, so I haven't been able to look it up. It is in the back in the colour section on styling kits... I don't remember the vents at the leading edges of the rear fenders, but there were alot of weeds and crap... So...to do this properly, one should remove the front fenders and replace them with the CA Z ones? But what about the rears? do you just cut off the covered body steel? I realize this is an extremely subjective question, but how hard would these be to remove from the current car at the J/Y? Could they be ground off? or cut off with an emery wheel or something? I've really been thinking about this fairly seriously the past 24 hours! IF they could be installed on a 240 and end up with approximately the same weight car of pehaps less...... I was thinking lose the buckets altogether and bury the headlights in a grille somewhat like the grille on my car now. Just thinking out loud... steve77

Ummm...'79 for "49 state legal" maybe....here in the Peoples Republic of California I believe they started in '75 with the FI vehicles. If not, then definitely by '76. steve(test pipe)77

Delivered a '79 to the crusher today and had to walk down and peruse all the Z's they had. Only one or two 240's, maybe 5 each 75-76 and 77-78 and about 6 ZX's.....ANYWAY... They have this shell of a Z there that has flared fenders. Not just flared wheel openings, but full widening of the front and rear body, like a GT car. Like a 944 Porsche kinda. The front fenders are about 2" wider than the door area and there are vents at the rear of the fenders....The rear fenders just flare staright out and wrap around the back. Everything is fibreglas. There is no hood, and the headlight buckets are converted to square lights (YUUUUUUCK!) with a sort of wide rubber gasket aroud the lights. It has some damage to the rear quarter. It has 75-76 style bumpers and the plaque says it had an l28 engine, so I am assuming it is a 280. I was in a hurry and only really started getting curious as I drove home. When somebody does something like this, do you remove the metal (original) fender material underneath? I'm thinking weight here. I looked in the wheelwells and the shrouds were in and in the rear quarter where the fibreglas was broken, I didn't see anything under there. Is this a kit that you could buy, or does somebody lay something like this up in their garage? It was very rigid and tight. If it matters, it was white with several colours of blue stripes runing the length of the side. steve77
