The short answer is that a highly modified car will be of less value than stock in the longrun. I would argue it would cost more money to bring a raceday Z back to stock than the other way around. Try doing a search history on Ebay to compare active and completed auction prices of stock versus modified example in similar condition. That should provide you with an initial baseline of value for comparison.

It is reassuring and somewhat vindicating to see a solid example fetch that price. However, part of me hopes the early Z market does not get too exuberant attracting speculators, who will start driving up the cost of parts even higher than they are now. I felt kind of foolish a few years ago paying $50 for a 4-speed shift knob from Courtesy Nissan to keep as a spare. I looked on ebay today and was floored to see the same part going for triple the price! This makes me want to store the original NOS exhaust system I been hoarding under my bed for safe keeping

Well...after a few failed attempts on ebay (item: 281544553219) , it appears the car finally found a buyer at $49,340.00. The trick seemed to be removing the reserve price. The final auction amount was well within the coveted Gold Medallion and the Nissan Commemorative Z territory.

I might be dating myself but... As a teenager, 10 bucks would get the fuel gauge on my Z to read close to 3/4 full

It's hard to say without any pictures to determine the extent of rust, what's missing in terms of original parts. The lack of original engine/trans doesn't help the value.

This is just another indicator of income inequality’s impact on different markets and how it fuels speculation. Are these buyers truly enthusiasts or just people with disposable income with a passing fancy? Part of me is grateful to see Japanese sports cars increase in value. It is an affirmation to those who held the belief these cars were highly underrated when compared to the monikers from Europe and the US. However, the dramatic increase in value will prove detrimental and price those with limited income out of the market, not to mention ridiculous prices for restoration parts.

I believe it still has a dash cap. If you look at auction on eBay, there is a close up of the lower dash and console by the pigtail. The photo shows what appears to be a full face dash cover screwed to the original dash.

The only thing I got out of the article was discovering James Earl Jones was a Crysler pitchman.

Other than the overzealous description of the vehicle, is there a specific example where he's being dishonest? From the photographs and claimed support documentation, the car looks pretty good. I take what we says with a grain of salt. He is a used car salesman after all.

I'm guessing the reserve is set for the owner to get at least half of his restoration cost back. Logic being not so much as current fair market value, but convincing a buyer they are purchasing an appreciating asset at half the cost to build if you did it yourself.

A photo of the VIN on the firewall would be nice as well.

Perhaps the intent was not restoring the vehicle to a coveted Gold Medallion status in the first place. According to the seller's ad, the total build cost was $90,000 with receipts, which makes be believe money was not a limiting factor in its restoration. I’m fairly certain if the seller wanted to build a Gold Medallion car, he would have intended to.
