Stereo for 240
ok I know I said I might not put in a new stereo, but might not also means might. So I went to Crutchfield to see what in-dash cd player/receiver will fit in my car and got zero results returned. Can I get some feedback as to what cd player/receiver you people are using? I'm not looking for a monster system, just something current that I will be able to hear over my new exhaust system ::.

new exhaust - banging?
! Dude, I've been driving around all day and the same exact thought crossed my mind. I'm already in love with this sound. When I level out the throttle it sings to me - it actually lets out a guitar type feedback sound, like it's singing. When I let off the gas it grumbles like it's pissed we're slowing down. My next upgrade was going to be a stereo but now I'm not sure . The one thing that is really starting to worry me though is, am I going to get pulled over for noise? I have to be VERY careful with the throttle or else it sounds like you're at a drag strip . And btw I found the source of the banging. My exhaust man forgot to bolt the tailpipe hanger to the nylon hanger - oops. He got an earful today . edit: oh yeah - it sounds nothing like rice, in fact I don't think it's even got the "European tone". My exhaust guy swore my engine wasn't stock when I fired it up after he got done. The sound is very deep at the low end of 1st and 2nd gear, then goes high at 3500 to 4000 rpm when I step into it. Under regular acceleration it smooths out very quickly from the low growl and almost disappears. I'm going to try to get a good quality sound sample of it - would anyone be interested in hearing this?

new exhaust - banging?
Possibly. I had this setup installed with the thought of installing a resonator later if I thought I needed it. Too soon to tell right now though, I have to drive it a while to see if I like/dislike it.

new exhaust - banging?
I don't think so. I think I didn't describe it correctly. It's more of a pop-pop-pop sound. Backfiring would be like an M-80 going off - it's nothing like that.

new exhaust - banging?
Hey guys, I had my new exhaust system installed yesterday - 2 1/4" pipe w/ Flowmaster muffler, stainless tailpipe, and no resonator. My first impression of the sound was "HOLY SH_T!". It's loud! Much louder than the old system. But it does sound very nice. I have a question tho - is this type of setup supposed to sound like it's backfiring? Under deceleration it sounds like it's backfiring. And under low accel conditions it has a nice low growl, but when I stomp on it, it has a high tinny sound - very different from the low accel condition. I guess this is the "turbo" effect? Unfortunately I have to bring it back because the tailpipe isn't centered in the car's exhaust opening at the rear, and the damn thing is banging against the opening. :|

Can you see them?
Yep. April seems to be the hot month. I'm adding events as I find them in my spare time, so if there are events that I've missed, or you know of an event that's not on the calendar, please feel free to add it. Thanks!

Can you see them?
I recently moved a number of private calendar events to public. I want to make sure the moved worked like it should. Would someone mind verifying that they are visible? Thanks.

she has style
I couldn't agree more. I'm completely in love with my Z. I can't explain why except to say that "it's me".

Center caps - help me understand
Well there's nothing worng with the caps that are on there now per say. They're clean and scratch free. They're just not original. No biggie - I can live with it for now.
-
Center caps - help me understand
Well I guess the point is kind of mute since MSA just told me they don't have the Z emblems (which you have to buy separately :| ) for the center caps in stock, unless someone else knows where I can find 3 3/16" Z center caps.

Center caps - help me understand
My 240 has slot rims with some off brand center caps that I want to replace with Z caps from MSA. The caps that are in there right now are sort of rigged to stay in place with a cardboard ring behind then that keeps them snug. I'm pretty sure the hole diameter is the right size for the caps they have, but what I'm not sure of is how they attach or which type I should use, or if they will work at all. They have two types - screw on and clip on. I know the backs of my rims don't have any holes for screws, so I guess I'd have to tap them, but they are not very thick. Should I use the clip ons? How exactly do they work? What do they clip on to?

The MSA catalog is here! The MSA catalog is here!
Yup it came in today. I've already filled out the order form for 240Z embroidered floor mats, walnut 240Z shift knob, Z centercaps for my slots, chrome 240Z key fob, and a foot rest. w00t! It's like christmas again!

2 choke levers? tires?
Yes, my wheels are 14"x6", which will accomodate up to 215's I believe. BTW, nice choice of model/color - my fav too .
-
2 choke levers? tires?
The original tire size should be shown in the glove box. Mine are listed there as 175/14. I believe the a/r is supposed to be 70. I'm replacing my 195/70/14's with 205/70/14's this week. Probably a Dunlop D65 Touring tire - speed rated T and 80000 mile treadwear. Congrats on the new Z!!!

works fine for me Mike. GJ!

new muffler and exhaust system
I'm having my entire exhaust system replaced on Wednesday, but I am NOT using a header. All 2 1/4" with a turbo muffler (not sure of brand - IPC?). I'll let you know how it turns out.

A horrible weekend for me
Grantman, really sorry that had to happen to you. Did the guy in the Jetta stop? I hope they catch that b*st*rd. While this is a setback for you, be glad it's not as bad as it could have been. At least your collision coverage will get you some $blingbling for your next car. Salvage what you can and make your next Z even better!! Good luck man!

Lowered Z's
I don't have any pics but I'm curious too. What do you have to do to lower a Z by an inch or two?

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
SO how do you connect the 2 1/4" pipe to the manifold? Modify the "Y" connector? Will the 2-1 5/8" outlet openings in the manifold cause a restriction?
-
Help me build a new exhaust system :)
In reference to not installing headers, I was wondering what happens at the manifold if you upsize your pipes to 2 1/4"? Doesn't the stock manifold create a restriction thereby defeating the purpose of upsizing the pipe?

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
kmack - I'm basically wondering the same as you. The pre-muffler is a resonator but I'm not sure if it's even necessary. Anyone care to share some knowledge about this? Also, I've read conflicting reports about what headers will do for horsepower on an L24 engine. What's the scoop? I don't want to throw money at something that's not going to perform.

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
yup, it's a stock L24 w/ dual roundtop SU's. I was under the impression that headers would get me more power, but I like the sound of an inexpensive solution with similar results. Thanks.

Help me build a new exhaust system :)
I want to replace the entire exhaust sytem on my stock engine 72 240. The current setup is aftermarket and doesn't even fit the car. The things I am looking to achieve with a new exhaust system are more horespower and a better sound - not too quiet, not too loud, but sounds like it's got some muscle. As far as price goes, I don't want to go crazy, but I don't want to go cheap either. So given that and given that I'm car illiterate, my questions to you are: 1) Should I use headers? 2) What is the desired configuration behind the headers/manifold? 3) What type of muffler should I use? Should I add glass packs? 4) Should I go stainless steel? 5) Where can I go for parts? 6) Anything else I need to think about? I really appreciate any help. I'll be sure to post results when the time comes. BTW it's for this car:

I need to know
A good place to start is www.zhome.com. Go to the Z Ownership section on the left. Tons of info there.
