I use microsoft edge..   on the left almost nothing works Carl.. fwiw

Thanks for the feedback - - use this URL http://zhome.com/Racing/Racing.htm

When that page comes up - shorten the URL to just http://Zhome.com and enter that - then try the links on the Left Hand frame - - for some reason that works in older versions of Safari ..

Carl,

I have Safari 14.0 Running on Catalina and it still only works with right click open in new.

I also tried it in FireFox 82.0 and it works fine.

Hi Terrapin - thanks for the feedback - in 25 years with the Web Server, I haven't run into this problem. Kind of weird .... all the HTML is the same, the server software is the same for over 2 years now..

Windows 10 with Google Chrome here, all updated, works excellently, no issues at all (Edit - I meant my computer works not the zhome site).

Some of the links on the top of the left side menu will drop the person down the left side menu, but only a few links in the lower portion of that left side menu do anything, like show a Forbidden page (How to Join...) .  The Copyright link brings up a new left side image, but all of the menu options below it disappear.  Basically you're claiming Copyright over something that can't be accessed and not allowing anybody to join the club.

Clicking on the book cover on the right half brings up a Lulu page in a separate tab.

Generally, it doesn't work un less you right click.  Are you reporting what you saw yourself or what somebody told you?

For the record, if you have the opportunity, the layout of your web site has always been a bit strange, with the split screen.  Might as well get with the times and simplify it?  Or just put a big message on the front page that says "right click".

To be clear, in the past when I checked you site for say, registry info the left panel links worked a few weeks ago. I only tried again the other day when Zed Head mentioned the issue.

I tried again just now. When I click on the book it does take me to a new page lulu. That seems fine.

In the left menu side of the main screen the at the top seems to work taking me lower in the left panel like an index should.

Z Car Home Page -
Section Descriptions:

Again clicking on any of the "expanded site index below" does not go anywhere.

Expanded Site Index Below:

izcclogo.gifInternet Z Car Club

in Firefox currently, and a few weeks ago in Safari it would open those index links in the right panel.

The two links "How to join"  and "Searchable members list" both lead to "403 forbidden"

Not sure what is up but I hope this info will help you sort it out.

Works fine on 7th gen ipad running  IOS13.7 with Chrome browser.

The layout and HTML that is in use on that site is almost as “vintage” as the Z it describes. It is no surprise users with various combinations of hardware and software will have any combination of issues you can imagine.

I edited my other post to clarify that I meant that my computer worked fine, but not the zhome site.

I think that we need more detail in what people are reporting.  If they only clicked one link and something happened they might be reporting that as "works".  The point is that when you left-click on one of the sub-topics nothing happens.

It's all about the left click button on a right-handed mouse.  There's probably a setting somewhere in whatever software is being used by Carl that defines what happens when people click on certain buttons.  I would go to that part of the settings area, or have your software guy do it.  A setting has been changed, it's probably that simple.  The sub-forums are there, the left button just doesn't work like it should.

It might even be that the people who say it works fine have their mouse setup to automatically open a new tab or window.  You can do that in your Settings menu with Windows.  But I think that many of use have our mouses/mice/meese set up to just open the new page in the same tab.  My mouse is set to open the new page in the same tab if I use the left button.

Edit - not sure if my memory is 100% on this but I think that @heyitsrama is an IT kind of guy.  Maybe he has a thought.

Edit 2 - @Carl Beck in case he has assumed all is fine...  People that don't know about the right click solution will just not use the site.  Weird that Terrapin Z figured that out.  Not obvious, to me anyway.

If you start at plain http zhome (http://zhome.com) the items in the left nav load correctly in the right frame.

If you start at https zhome (https://zhome.com) many of the items in the left nav don't load into the right frame.

This is because modern browsers don't allow a mixture of https and http resources in a page.

the easy and correct fix is to replace all the absolute http links with relative links, then the linked frame will load with the same protocol as the parent page.

Interesting.  That does work, but I still got "Forbidden" when I tried to Join.

I wonder if this is a clue though, below.  I don't get the http address.  I get zhome.com and not secure. I typed it in directly also and it converts to the "not secure" mode.

Just to add another, if you type in www.zhome.com like many do, you get the site that doesn't do 99% of what it's supposed to do.

Finally, not sure where "modern" starts, pretty sure it worked within the last year.  It sounds like what you're saying is that the browser producers have bypassed the site's protocols.  Carl's site software has been obsoleted.

the 'community' thinks of http as outdated and generally https is preferred these days. that's why google returns an https link to zhome.

your browser may also default to https if you don't enter the protocol - my chrome browser still defaults to http if I enter just 'zhome.com'.

I didn't spot your problem with the 'how to join link'. That is down to the apache config on the server - the page http://zhome.com/~aktar/memberdb/entry returns a 403 status code, which is basically saying you don't have permission to visit that page. That could also be a result of modern browsers declining to participate in insecure stuff, or it could be deliberate - maybe you can't join the izcc any more. (I haven't read the whole thread!)

~aktar means the home directory of a user called aktar. Presumably aktar is member of the izcc. There are quite a few links to zhome.com/~aktar around the internet, all return a 403 forbidden response. I Guess aktar was a mover and shaker, given the member database is in his directory, but anyway,  none of us can access any of his stuff any more.
