Anyone opinion. Are these dimples depth markers related to head cut maximum?

Or just related to the casting process.

Looks to me like a drilled hole that's been plugged. Is that directly opposite the oil feed hole to the cam towers?

No this is a E31.

My E88 has the same markers.

I sold the P90 and I don't recall what that looked like.

Here's an early e31, n47 and a p79. They all have it. You may have something there?!
