I thought I would update some information that hls30.com included in a thread he posted detailing rear view mirror restoration. That thread is now closed but you can do a search for

"Rear View Mirror Restoration" for the complete article. He included a website, www.mirrorresilvering.ca, used to have his mirrors resilvered. This website is no longer in operation, but I did find a business in the northwest that does do resilvering.

I gave them a call and they quoted me a price of roughly $70 + shipping, more than one would like, but there seem to be very few businesses that do resilvering these days.

Since new mirrors are NLA, I thought this might be useful for a perfect mirror restoration.

Several companies re-silver, the most economical way is to send several sets of glass in at a time-otherwise the minimum charge skews the price dramatically. The last sets I had done were around $35/ea resilvered, coated, and the edges sealed. If I can't keep it below $40, I will start doing it myself.

a few companies actually restore the entire mirror in leu of simply re-silvering the glass-$200 plus.

The PDF here is not the final version I made, I will will hunt it down in the next couple of days and post it, or make a new one-I have been saving up red dots to restore, and I have several later mirrors that could benefit as well.

Dealing with a worn socket is not a serious task...I will add that to the next PDF.

Worn socket is my biggest issue. The silver around the edges is a bit rough, the mirror is very usable.....except the shake.

Nothing too new to contribute to this forum, but thought I'd share some before and after pics on my rearview mirror refurbishment.

From a web search I found and used, 'Alchemy Mirror Resilvering' in St. Paull, MN (alchemy@bitstream.net). The owner is a chap by the name of Tim. Tim charged me $40.00 which included return shipping, and he accepted PayPal. The turn around was ~ two weeks.

Looks great, the price of re-silvering mirrors has gone through the roof the last 20 years, I guess it's because of all the nasty chemicals involved, so you got a good price.

Did you use the hot water and dish soap method to get the glass out and back in?

Yes, I did the hot tap water method to soften up the plastic frame (nothing creative) and it worked as hoped.

Also, further to you comment regarding 'nasty chemicals', the $40.00 I quoted included a $3.00 surcharge referred to as, 'Minimum Hazardous Waste Surcharge'.
