Every now and then something odd really intrigues me. I'm sure you do the same.. Anyway here are my questions - does anyone know the answers, or willing to guess?

1. Why are the sidewalls on F1 cars and other race cars high-profiled?

2. Why do some Japanese numberplates have a big diagonal red line through them?

1) On F1 cars I believe they are all so high profile because the FIA regulations restrict the wheel size so they can limit the brake size? Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.
