Hrm ... so I just got done installing an electric fan (fan clutch, after less than 20k miles ... but over the course of 4 years ... stopped working right... ) and while I am quite pleased with it's cooling capacity, I'm now concerned about my charging system ... at least while at idle... The fan, draws somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 or 15 amps, which, on my stock 50 amp alt is pretty significant. The obvious solution is to spend the blood sweat and tears (not to mention do-re-mi) of splicing in an externally regulated badboy from another car ... but I have another idea ... and this is strictly a feeler to see what the electrical gurus on these forums think. After searching the archives, I was unable to find the info I need. I want to know if anyone can tell me what size battery is closest to the original size battery for the 240Z? Also, if anyone has any recommendations for where to get one (NTB, Sears, PepBoys, etc) and what specific battery they sell that is a match, that would be great as well.

It's Father's Day today and I decided to replace the interior instrument light rheostat on my 1971 240Z (manufacture 6/71) with a used one that I picked up on eBay. The original rheostat stopped working long ago and the instruments lights are dim. My hope is that the replacement rheostat would solve this problem. What I thought was going be a simple swap turned out to be a an excursion into the nether reaches of the dash. It appears to me that the rheostat is in a totally inaccessible location and that the swap can only be done if the dash is removed. I read EScanlon's 2/12/2002 Post on this matter and he says you can get a 90 screw drive and there and loosed the two …

any one have any cloose as to why my park light fuse blows out immediately upon turing on the light switch on. the front lights our not hook-up period. the rear blinkers our hook up and the signals work. the hazard works but if i turn on the headlights on the first setting it blows out. there is also no rear side mark er lights too.:mad: thanks anyone

Hey guys I'm new here and I need some help installing the igniton wire harness on my 1975 280Z it has an l28et motor from an 81. When I bought the car the swap was almst compete but the ignition wire harness was never installed and now I have to install it but have no idea about were the wires that are on the other end go. Please help... the harness is the one with the six pin connector that goes to the ecu....

i've got a "83 ZX & i'm noticing Z's had a lot of electrical problems. So for now: does anyone know if a problem with the ECM can simulate a ground fault? & i tried to install a borsh hi-amp alternator but i had pole problems doing that.

Hey guys i'm new to the z cars. In the last six months i have bought five. but my latest buy is a 72 240 which is giving me problems. Got it a couple weeks ago and put in some gas a new coil and points and she fired right up. Then a day or two later it started giving me problems. once you turn the car off it will not start until you open the hood and push that red button by the battery. Now this morning i tried to start the car and it will only run if you keep the key in the start position, as soon as you let off the key it dies. Any help would be great. I'm not familiar with the electronics on these cars yet.

Hello, My fan switch stopped working today, which is a bummer when it's 90+ outside. The A/C was blowing fine on the way to the store all the way until I shut the car off. But after I came out of the store the blower won't blow at any speed. I've only had this Z for about 3 weeks. There have been a couple of times when I would have to jiggle the lever to get the blower going. I haven't seen anywhere that there is a fuse for the fan switch. I have the FSM, so I can see how to take it apart, but there is no mention of a fuse. Is there an inline fuse for the fan switch on a 78? Or could it just be a bad switch? Any ideas are appreciated! Hello all This past weekend I was cleaning my Z and came across an idea I hope you guys can help me figure out. There is a tiny wire that goes to the top of the starter, I believe this is the ignition switch wire. Anyhow, is it possible to splice in a switch of any kind that would prevent power to reach the starter? (A kill switch on it that is) Thanks Jan

I installed a 280zx alternator from a 83 2+2 in my 71 240z last summer. I used the conversion plug in place of the stock regulator. I recently noticed that upon startup the charge indicator shows a discharge until the engine is reved to at least 3500 rpm. Once that rpm is reached its like you flipped a switch and the alternator begins charging and actually charges very well,even at a low idle. However after I turn the car off and restart it once again shows a discharge until it is reved again. I have searched the internet and found this described on other alternator upgrades (GM 1-wire) but the "cut in" occurs at a much lower rpm. has anyone else experienced this on an al…

I have a 280Z I am the true second owner of this car, had some charging issue found the wiring harness had been either tampered with or rotted, and they resoddered in some areas. starts and runs fine. I replaced the alternator and regulator both (autozone) battery not charging correctly, when I pull the positive cable it runs eratic and surges but stays running. I am at a lost, not sure if it is the wiring? what to check? Tested both the alternator and regulator both seem to be fine? Any suggestions or help finding a good harness with the fusible links? Sunday evening while I was doing some exploratory work on the water-temperature sensor I grounded the yellow wire to determine if the gauge or the sensor were defective. At first it appeared as though the gauge was the problem, but after trying a few different grounds, I was able to get a full scale reading on the gauge. I attributed the poor ground to the condition of the connector, which is corroded. Monday afternoon I decided to go out for a drive. The car wouldn't start, which is unusual since this engine starts easily.
