Anyone remember..?
Rooting around in the attic the other day, and ran across this bag. This 'Challenge' series is actually the genesis of the SCCA Showroom Stock Sedan series. The editors of Car and Driver challenged the readers to compete with them using basically 'stock' vehicles. Great fun and some interesting racing.

70's pinstripes and other cool details...
I'm so happy that y'all love the 240 side stripes. If you want to see a nice example, look in the Motorsport catalog, 20th Anniversary edition (orangey cover), on page 24. THAT'S MY CAR!!!! I guess my installation was good enough to use for advertising.

14" tires
Yes, it's Melbourne, Florida; and yes we do have some great surf. The champ, Kelly Slater is from here, as are many other world class surfers. But I digress. My tire size is 225/60R14. Don't know if it was the wider width in 14" that was a holdup, or just the 14" dia.

14" tires
For all of you with the stock size wheel (14") on your Z: have you had any trouble getting tires? I had to replace one with a broken belt last month, and wanting to get one the same as the rest, I went to the Tire Kingdom store I had purchased them from originally. It took 9 days to get one tire in, and the salesman said they were getting hard to come by, as they are not making 14's as much anymore. Any one hear anything like this?

Z Parts for Christmas
Not exactly Z related, but I got a certificate for a 3 lap ride-around in one of the Richard Petty Experience cars at Daytona.

To all Classic Zcar Club members
It is Christmas Eve here in Florida as I post this; and I'll be heading a bit south to Boca Raton for Christmas at my sister-in-law's. Gonna give the Rice Rocket a nice cruise down the turnpike for a present! Everyone have a safe and joyous Christmas and New Year.

Anyone into golf?
A man is out on the course, and suddenly forgets what hole he is playing. Walks to the next tee and asks a member of the female foursome 'Would you mind telling me what hole I'm on? I'm right in back of you.' The woman answers, 'We are on five, so you must be on four.' The man continues play and when he gets on the back nine, he again forgets where he is. Again asks the ladies up ahead the same question. They again tell him what hole he is on. The round ends, and they are all enjoying drinks in the clubhouse. The gentleman apologizes for his lapses of memory, and strikes up a conversation with one of the women. The talk gets around to what they do for a living, and they are both sales reps. The woman is embarrassed to tell the man who she works for, but finally confesses to being a sales rep for Tampax. The man laughs out loud, and says 'I'm still a hole behind you. I'm a rep for Preparation H'.

Idle kickdown
I have triple Webers on my 240. Runs great, but when I come to a stop, be it at a light, stop sign, etc.; the idle stays at about 1500 to 2000 rpm. If I give the gas pedal a sharp kick, the idle may or may not drop to the 800-1000 rpm range that I set it at in the garage. Sometimes takes two or three raps on the pedal. Linkage is free, also have some good return springs on the linkage. I have the Crane optical ignition in the dist., so there are no points. Not running any vacuum advance. Could the centrifugal advance be hanging or do I have wear in the distributor? Any ideas/theories would be appreciated.

Engine Detailing Goodies
I got those aluminum bolt caps in blue and put them on the strut mtg. bolts to dress them up a bit. Also got a set of matching blue wires. Used blue tie-wraps to bundle my harness together at the appropriate tie-points. Polished any billet or aluminum parts including the manifold and valve cover. Have the chrome allen bolt kit from MSA for the cover also.

You don't need a parachute to skydive. You need a parachute to skydive twice. My give-a-damns busted.

Dashboard stuff on 2Fast/2Furious cars
Speaking of 2F2F; the scene where the semi runs over the red Saleen Mustang? A friend at work owned that Saleen and got toasted at a golf tournament. During a burnout leaving the parking lot, he managed to put it in a pond. Insurance totalled it and he later found out the production co. bought the car and used it in that scene.

How fast will it really go?
Hey Seerex, you got the name of that trooper? I'd love to find out where he's patrolling so I can get clocked at well over the limit and NOT get a ticket! You are one lucky SOB! Don't find too many FHP guys that are appreciative of fast Z's.

Any Pics of #0006 in BSR paint as #33?
Any one remember the 810 that Sharp also campaigned? I have some neat pics of it at Lime Rock. If I can get the slides (remember them?) down to the scanner at my wife's business, I will try to post them. (not quite sure it is feasible with her machine)

How Close Are Our VIN #'s
Now I'm confused. Zguitar71 has a build date of 1/71 and a VIN of -23876. jmark has a build date of 2/71 and a VIN of -22975. My car has a build date of 2/71 and a VIN of -23766. How does Zguitar71 have an earlier build date and a higher VIN?

Wiring harness problem!!!!!!
Try jumping the two heavy gauge wires that went to the (+) and (-) terminals on the ammeter together. I was able to start my 71 that way when it was in a similar condition.

Interior Dimensions
A guy on 'another' site is over 300 lbs. and he fits, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Hurricane Katrina
Everybody seems to have a 'Hollywood mentality' about this tragedy. The cavalry won't be there right after the commercial break, folks. This is REAL LIFE. It takes TIME to get the supplies and people organized and sent to the areas in need. If it was so hard for people to get out, what makes them think it will be any easier for someone to get in? They think because the talking heads are there, the aid should be too. Yes, errors were probably made, but to blame EVERYTHING on the Prez is asinine. Just shut up and help. Send money, take in a family, bring water or clothing to a shelter site; above all, give thanks it wasn't YOU; and make your own preparations for whatever natural disaster may strike your area.

Is this stupid or what?
When I was working on my friends 72 project, we moved the basically stripped car out of my garage. This was so a body man could come look at it during the day while I was at work. I had removed the license plate to work on the T/L finishers; and left it off; as the car would be at a shop by the weekend. I got a notice from our local fire dept., after the car was gone, about an unregistered vehicle on my property. It seems the F.D. handles building code violations in my city. I explained the situation, and he said OK, don't worry about it. Two days later, another F.D. guy shows up, asking about the car. Again, I explained the situation, and told him it was in a shop. Seems a 'neighbor' complained. The car wasn't out there more than 4 days. Bunch of homeowner assoc. Nazis. Couldn't even come by and ASK.

Hurricane Katrina
So far, I haven't seen any outpouring of aid to us from our "allies" around the world. I guess they won't need our help when another earthquake or tsunami comes calling.

Strut Inner Threads Messed Up on a 72 240Z
Got a pair in good shape, but I'm all the way across country in Fla. They're all stripped down too. Just the tube with the spindle on it. PM me if you're interested. I'm sure shipping costs would be a bear.

Weber isolators
Just put some isolators on my triple set-up. What a difference in the heat transfer, or lack of it! After a very short (2 mi.) run, I couldn't put my hand on the manifold just behind the carb, but could hold the carb flange. They also have some vibration damping that seems to keep my idle a bit more even. These things are definitely worth it. Got them from www.racetep.com for about $15 ea.

anyone ever cleaned out their fuel tank?
I had roughly the same problem in my 71. Wouldn't go more than 10 miles before it would die from a clogged fuel filter. Drained the tank and removed it. After banging and shaking, I recovered over a quart jar of rust flakes. Took it to a local radiator shop and had it boiled out. Some shops in the U.S. may no longer do this due to our 'wonderful' EPA regulations. Bought the Eastwood coating kit and sealed and coated the inside. No more problems.

HLS30 00006
Good lord, does that car bring back memories! I watched it race many times at Lime Rock in the early 70's during the SCCA Nat's on Memorial Day weekend. Those were the days! Young, single and cash in my pocket.

Dual-tipped Mufflers
MSA has the turbo exhaust tip on p. 51 of the catalog for $50. Is that what you are looking for? The pic is a little confusing, as it is made to mount vertically. Pic looks a bit horizontal. I have one I never used, as I put headers and a 2 1/2" system on my Z. This one is for the stock exhaust size. Can let it go for $30 + shipping from Fla.

Your First car.
First car was a 65 Ford Custom 4-door that I bought 'cause it had a huge trunk to carry our band stuff in. Stalled out on the way home from the dealer. After a once over by a trusted mechanic, found out I needed a new alternator and the e-brake was frozen, so the brakes were locked on. This was a car that supposedly had passed a NYS inspection. Had it for 18 mos. and put in a tranny, 2 carbs and 8 out of 16 lifters. In '72 went to my local Datsun dealer and got a new 1200 coupe. Ran her for 14 yrs. Best car I ever owned. Want another one.
