1973 Safari Rally winning Z
Gav240z commented on HS30-H's comment on a gallery image in 03 (EXCLUSIVE) Nissan Japan Warehouse TourIt's so strange but looking at the photo I can almost feel the excitement behind it. Looks like this is how she finished the race. Even those tyres are making a statement , brilliant I absolutely love it. By the way is this one of those cars to benefit from the Y engine head?

Alan can you enlighten us with the rare spares website? I could not find it at rarespares.com.au or rarespares.com hope they don't come up as links. I'll give google a shot and if I find it post it here for the others. Thanks.

Tie Rod Ends Changed OVer.
Thanks dude I was fairly sure it was an alignment issue. It makes sense afterall the toe in is controlled by the tie rods and steering adjustment. It just seemed so severe that I thought I'd done something wrong. Probably bad wording there, but what I mean is that I was not expecting it to throw things that far out of whack. I've been meaning to get the front aligned for a while but knew I was gonna have to do the tie rods anyway so left it. I'll let you know how she is after I take it to be aligned. I think you've mentioned before it's best to get it done professionally with the computer systems they use these days as oppose to doing it the long way. And for $50 it's not worth the time I'd take doing it anyway. :classic: . Thanks again (Feel better now).

New seats working well
Love the Porsche seats what are they out of a 911? I would like to find out how much they would cost to get some like that here that's all so if you specify what year mdl that would be great . Did they fit fairly easily? and the third thing is are they electric I can see what looks like button on the side there?

ball joints
Hi don't know if I can help but on my 240z I changed the ball joints and I did notice that the crown nut was a bigger diameter than the original ones. I thought maybe it would not go back into the strut as a result but I didn't have troulbe with it. However with my ball joints I got The Crown Nut and the Pin that goes through that with the ball joints. I think I only paid $60 for the ball joints $120 for both sides. That's in AUS$$$ so would be really cheap compared to US$$. The tie rod ends is what stung me $198 for both  GermanZ I love the leather Datsun seats you have absolutely magnificent. It's one thing I've envied of Porsche owners is there high quality interior. I'd love to treat my Z to the same goodies and get my door skins done the same.

Tie Rod Ends Changed OVer.
Hi guys I've recently replaced the following items on my 240z. Front Control Arm Bushes. Front Ball Joints. Tie Rod Ends (Track Rod Ends) depening where your from. Now I did the others first and they were fine, but after replacing the tie rod ends the car pulls to the left really badly. I'm pretty sure the car hasn't been in a bad enough accident to make alignment really bad and before i replaced them it used to only pull a little to the left. By that I mean if I drove straight let go of the wheel it would slowly vear to the left hand side. Passenger side for us HS30 Owners.(Right hand drive). I'm almost 100% sure I put it all back together correct and I tried to make sure I didn't adjust anything when replacing them. Is there any wrong way to install these? I'm pretty sure it's alignment but I would like any opinions or things I should check. I'll be asking the guy who gave me the tie rod ends and probably getting it aligned very soon as it feels quite dangerous.

Help me please!
I know your budget doesn't allow but it won't take long. You'll miss it so much you'll be looking for another :classic: . I was Zless for about 1 year and looking at other Z's on the net and watching other people's restoration projects drove me so nuts I had to get another . I had my Corolla some people do those AE92's up and stick the 4AGZE engine in it. FOr a 4 banger goes like hell and I can see the fun but a FWD shopping cart was not for me. Truth of the matter is there's so much support on the net for Z car owners. Were a hands on bunch who like to work on our cars ourselves and help each other. With the Corolla clubs or forums I found it very difficult to get help with some of the problems I was having. But Alas there's other things in life and when your on a UNi budget it doesn't help owning a Z. I haven't bought a decent set of clothes in a while(mum sometimes helps out good on ya mum). THere's going out with friends aswell and sometimes you have to give up things like your Z. But don't worry i for one will still talk to you and your 240k shares the mechanicals that our little Z does so we should be able to assist you.

Battery tray rust
You probably already realise this but I'd be sanding this back and using some form of sealant here asap. My old 240z had a huge hold that had also rusted it's way down the firewall and into the chassis rail. So that it would rot from the inside out. I had surface area rust on my old 260z like this and one afternoon took care of it. Helped me sleep at night .

Why are cross-flows so rare?
Well i asked to be corrected wherever I was wrong and I guess you did just that. Thank you for pointing out that a crossflow head doesn't mean the air can flow straight out the other side. The explanation's given make more sense to me now. This also explains why an L28 could reach the 600HP mark. I always thought flow would limit it. I have alot more faith in the ability of my L engine now and I've seen a friends turbo Z in action so I shouldn't have had any doubts. Alan I'm with you I luv my L6 :classic: . Never been a fan of a engine swap although I do admit a bent 8 or Rb26 would be a ball of fun. Maybe one day . Alan was I correct about the PGC10 being the first of the Skyline series to wear the GTR badge? Interesting conversation and it's made me wanna drive an L series with the different heads just to see how they are. The S20 I think will always boggle me I keep thinking of the fun I had in my twin cam corolla but it would have that torquey feel to it. Who knows if this Z obsession continues throughout my life maybe I'll build a replica 432R just like Alan :classic: . Oh and thanks for not making too much fun of me for my crossflow head theorem.

Idling makes him sick!
Alpha I think the problem you mention is something similar to what I had. First do you have an electronic dizzy? If not replace the condenser & points in the old mechanical distributor. There both very cheap. Have you changed your coil? The coils are known to pay up after the car has warmed up. Just a thought.

Why are cross-flows so rare?
I agree with Mike on this one. I can understand why the early Z's did not have crossflow heads. If it's true that the engine design came from Prince motorcompany who initially got there's from Mercedes then it would make sense. The 510's and other 4 cylinder Datsun's had the L engine design and the Z was just two more cylinders with the longer crank. Where it doesn't make sense to me is when it comes to the Turbo 280zx's??? Nissan apparently did there homework on the head design and that to me is strange. If Nissan were gonna do so much engine head research why not just make it crossflow??? I guess they got the idea as they did build an RB30 but it's just not part of the L family anymore. The S20 engine came in the KPGC10 correct my chassis prefix if I'm wrong. The Older GTR(can't remember if they were the first Skyline to wear the GTR badge I think so..). It was also found in the 432 and 432R for those unfamiliar 4 Valves per cylinder, 3 Carbs (Think tripple Mikuni's) and 2 Cam Shafts.(Twin Cam). These were the top of the range cars and to me that might provide some explanation. The other engine head that was crossflow was the O.S Giken head from what Alan has told me. These were expensive to make and most were destroyed in the 80's I think by all the street racers. I think there's one other head and don't hesitate to correct me where I'm wrong here. It was the LY28 and the engine head was used on the Works rally cars as far as I know. In these engines though I don't think the spark plug was at the top rather on the exhaust side(LY28). I also heard that crossflow was better because air entering the chamber doesn't have to make a 180 degree turn to leave the engine again. With all the emphasis put on emission controls car companies these days look for the cheapest most efficient ways to get power out of engines. I suppose that's why our old cars benefit so much from new extractors and air filters etc... Whereas new cars don't get the same benefit. I'll scout around for a nice heat shield to stop heat sink for the carbies. Also you can get header wrap that will stop a large amount of this however it has been known to shorten the life of the headers. Another solution would be to get HPC coatings done it's the stuff they used to use on Jet Engines. It keeps the tempreture down and looks very shiny :classic: .

Early 2+2's
Thanks Trex for the insight some of it I already knew some I did not. The chassis reinforcement on the 432R was new to me as well as the perspex glass. Yes I do just want one :classic: . I think Zedrally is trying to build a replica car of what was on show at the 73 Japanese Motorshow. I dont think he's trying to say that the chassis prefix is a ZGRS30 although if were gonna make up numbers wouldn't it make more sense to call it a GRS30-H? To co-inside with the HS30-H prefix. Just a thought. I'm glad to see not everyone has money when there at Uni infact most of us don't. That's exactly why my restoration project was not working, I had a run around car but I could not afford more than 1 car so I had to sell both to buy a Z. One day I'll do that restoration :classic:. One other thing anyone know if the 432R seats are comftable? I have been wanting to get a set of racing seats for my HS30 but I really like the leather stock seats and would like to keep something that would suit the era of the car. These are probably difficult to obtain but something to treasure. :classic: .

Manafold questions.
Well I can confim that does not looking anything like a Z manifold at all. I see one in my garage everyday so I would confirm not a Z manifold. The air cleaner does look Nissan ish but it's alot shorter than the 240z one. Best way to check the Hitachi British versions I'd say would be check the mixture nut at the bottom of the carb. If it's a nut I'd say it's British and if it's a Hitachi it should be a nice circular knob like a Television one that's nice and easy to turn. The linkage does not look Z like. Unfortunately I'm no SU expert still learning but the only differences between the SU's sold on the US version and Australian ones are: The 73 mdl US Spec had additional emission controls and valves where as the Aus spec ones were pretty similar all the way thru 70-70.. Feel free to correct me here.

S12.. Toyoya front brake caliper
I was considering converting my 240z to these but I have concerns about the upsprung weight factor. I went to a local wrecker when my friend was picking up parts for his Yoda and asked about getting a set of these. He recommended I stayed away from them because of how heavy they are what opinions do you guys share and is there really any benefit to using these over the 2 pot ones? I don't see the benefit in having them really if your using the non vented discs as brake fade is a major issue with these cars. I have heard of good combinations using 300zx calipers and toyota GT4 Rotors? Obviously it's gonna cost more but if your gonna upgrade the brakes why not get something that will really tear the tarmac to pieces. If your like me than brakes are an important part of your car.

Did you guys see this a few years back?
As much as I like the yellow one with the opera style windows I think Nissan made the right decision with the production version however I've come to dislike it's rear just a bit. It's a bit bulky and flat, much prefer the race car look of the S30 Z from behind. However the 350z looks alot better with the rear spoiler I saw on it at the motorshow here in Melbourne a little while back. Really needs the rear wing. Interesting to see if I like the roadster version. :classic:

Sex or Z?
It depends who the sex is with also. If it's cheap dirty and a one night stand well I'd pick my Z over it anyday of the week. However if it's with someone your comftable with and have been married to or seeing for a long time and on a consistant basis then I'd give up my Z for the time being and focus on the task at hand. I could always buy another Z later on in life when i have the money to really look after her. Just my 2cents. PS: Without Sex none of us would be having this discussion think about it!!!

Works 240ZR
Alan could you please clarify what a 240ZR is? Is it another factory spec model designed exactly for racing or was it a designated name for a car converted to race form?
